It passed🥳! Here are the very reasonable street management principles the Pike Place Market Constituency adopted tonight. It would astounded normal Seattleites that this remains controversial, and that opponents said it was “similar to Trump’s efforts to tear down the East Wing of the White House” 🤯

The Pike Place Market News’s October 2026 cover story rebuts its September 2026 cover story, which had called for the market’s Constituency to prioritize “real” shoppers. The anonymous author says that the group “is for everyone” now.

But were those sales made by "real customers"? This is an actual article in the internal Pike Place Market newspaper that goes ahead and makes the argument that Market visitors who only buy food or drink aren't as "real" as those who buy produce.

It costs $1 per year to join the Pike Place Market Constituency, in case anyone else would like to influence the market to continue to make space for pedestrians and not wayward drivers during peak operating hours, year round. www.pikeplacemarketconstituency.org/membership

I've been spending a lot of time at Pike Place lately and I think "you can't put the toothpaste back in the tube" is a real dynamic that will absolutely influence the conversation heading into a permanent access plan next year.

In case anyone was still under the impression that @bsky.app was some sort of haven from venture capital-funded AI dreams, they also built this

How many reporters would, without owning a car, cover a town council meeting in a tiny suburb on a Tuesday night? Ryan Packer would. Support your local journos!

Greetings from a crowded dining room in Beaux Arts Village, Washington (pop. 310), where the town council is holding a meeting. On the agenda is a hearing that involves the town's compliance with the 2025 Housing Accountability Act.

I recently took on a couple of contracting gigs with a company that hires "experts" to give human feedback on experimental AI models. It might be a good way to make a little money and keep my skills sharp, if only there were any work available for me to pick up. weill.org/2026/10/13/a...

weill.orgAI Training Gig Work Is as Strange as It LooksI had my first “AI interview” recently. When I’ve told people this, they usually ask, “Do you mean an interview for an AI company or an interview conducted by AI?” I mean both of these. The company is...

Had my first author scam encounter: got an unsolicited pitch to turn my book into a course. The person lied about having bought my book, and sent me an outline, which was reported as 100% AI text by two checkers. I respect the audacity, but I respect customers enough to not sell them slop.

Bluesky is just as accommodating of ragebait and misinformation as the site it replaces, but I can turn off the “Discover” feed and see only my follows’ posts in chronological order, and that’s good enough for me.

Really enjoying the diversification of Seattle’s coffee shops. Analog is such a good shop; I wish them continued success on Westlake.

Joe Veyera@joeveyera.bsky.social

Analog Coffee will open a new location in Westlake, taking over the former Starbucks drive-thru at the AGC Building, according to recent documents filed with the City of Seattle.

Urban development, public restrooms, inviting public spaces. We could learn from Coach Tomlin.

As an alumnus of the “Kenneth C. Griffin School of Computer Science”, I was momentarily bummed about the association with a billionaire hedge fund businessman, but then I remembered who Carnegie and Mellon were.

Cheap Seattle sports fan tip: if you’re going to the last @mariners.com games of the season, check out the merch stores. For some reason, they have not only baseball gear but also World Cup merch at 50% off.

Sound Transit chair Dave Somers just announced at the monthly ST meeting that there will be a forum about Ballard Link light rail expansion in Ballard on Monday, October 19. Place and time to be announced.

Blame AI, but this is what it looks like to watch a movie or play a video game set in “Seattle”

I love living on the border of First Hill and Pioneer Square and taking a ferry from SeaTac Airport to West Seattle. It's too bad about what happened to Lake Union though.

In about a decade, @theurbanist.org went from “five guys in a coffee shop” (per @typewriteralley.bsky.social) to filling an 800+ seat auditorium on a Tuesday night to talk transit. Great work on urbanist advocacy!

We're just about to get underway at Town Hall Seattle with @nerd4cities.bsky.social, our own Ryan Packer, and special guests @kccclaudia.bsky.social and @alexis4seattle.bsky.social. Sold out crowd!

I can't help but notice that the "privacy" that Apple touts applies to a device purchaser, but not to other people who happen to exist near the purchaser. Same goes for other surveillance tech makers.

Pike Place gets all the attention, but we should also be pedestrianizing streets in every neighborhood. Imagine how great Ballard Ave could be if we closed it to cars permanently.

The drugstore-to-fast-food pipeline continues; the Broadway Rite Aid and the Japantown Bartell's are supposedly both becoming McDonald's, per planning docs

Joe Veyera@joeveyera.bsky.social

McDonald's could be expanding its Seattle footprint, filing plans late last month for the former Bartell Drugs location at 4th and Jackson in the Chinatown-International District. services.seattle.gov/Portal/cap/C...

Getting more annoyed every time @nytimes.com makes me verify my account, then suggests that I get an "All Access Family" membership to avoid future verifications, subtly suggesting that I should stop sharing my account with family members. I'm not; I own multiple devices. Stop the accusations.
