math is not dead, but first-past-the-post credit in math might be, and that means a lot of individuals' motives to fuck with math might be but that's deeply distinct from math being dead!

Whatever you can think about Anthropic, I don’t think OpenAI or Elon Musk is taking this *more* seriously than them. They’re the ceiling. And they aren’t able to stop it! Not good.

TBH I think it's fortunate, because vetoing a chapter's overwhelming endorsement vote is organization-breaking in the absence of essentially criminal misconduct by the candidate.

alyaza ΘΔ@alyazabirze.bsky.social

it's very unfortunate that the NPC has totally fucked up what at one point was a slam dunk case (Raman had an awful record on Palestine before this year) and now they're probably going to revoke her endorsement on the flimsiest pretext they could have, pissing everyone off in doing so

Dawg we are talking about 1966, no American white working man was suddenly getting left high and dry by deindustrialization or austerity or recession The only “radical shift in the material conditions” was “you have to let black people into your school/office/shop/apartment block now”

Picking a fight with the local that has a bunch of nationally beloved and known entertainers backing the endorsement. Sure, that'll go well. Are they just stupid? This is a fight you try with little guys, not folks who buy ink by the barrel.

If they didn't want to be called Pedos, why do they keep Gym Jordan around?

Rory Blank@roryblank.bsky.social

After several years of calling anyone they dislike a pedophile or a groomer, the GOP has discovered that it can be done to them too, and the chairman of the Ohio Republican party is not happy about it

Personal Phone. Work Phone (day job). Work Phone (handler). "Work" Phone (phone I use to cheat on my wife who is an SVR illegal). "Personal" Phone (watch tiktoks I don't find funny to throw MSS off). Random burner flip phone I only order pizza off of to throw off whoever loots my corpse.

The trick here is that farmers aren't regular voters. Most farmers are professionals like her who know on which side their bread is buttered. They're wealthy landowners with perpetual cash flow issues. Even if Trump threatens the latter, Dems threaten the former, & the former is their identity.

like a lot of the rallying around swing state dems’ shortcomings starts to resemble the mistakes of bernie’s most diehard supporters of responding to any criticism with “bend the knee immediately or you’re the enemy”, and it’s not an effective strategy in either case

the thing is, i also don’t think you actually achieve maximum support via maximum-juche, maximum-hostility to criticism either, you tell a different message depending on where you are, who you are, and who you are talking to

I know there's a lot going on but I feel it should probably be more of an above-the-fold story that members of Congress released a thoroughly documented report directly accusing the president of the United States of being a serial rapist.

The “something” in question was the workers themselves deciding by 1966 that they no longer wanted New Dealer welfare capitalism if it meant black Americans would benefit from it while anti-war protesters were free to burn the flag

Waldo@waldo42.bsky.social

Something happened in the 70's that crystallized politics (and many other topics) into a new set of assumptions and priors. It gave rise to Reaganism and completely crushed New Deal Socialism; Dems that eventually reemerged were and still are centrists scared of their own shadows.

Sure Prohibition was handled poorly, but that doesn't mean that the issues with drinking at the time didn't exist. And right now our handling of online gambling is the equivalent of delivering alcohol directly to a problem drinker's home and not charging them a delivery fee.

Wandering Hoo reposted

my only concern with re-restricting gambling is that it wouldn't go far enough on its own, it's an appendage of the same scam octopus as social media slop and MLMs and wellness products that run a spectrum from snake oil to literally just Drugs we need, like, Super Temperance against general vice

Jeff Fecke@jkfecke.bsky.social

In retrospect, prohibition worked perfectly. We needed shock therapy to get truly staggering levels of alcoholism under control. After a few years we opened things back up, but the fever had broken.

It's Quincy. If they were responsible, they wouldn't be Russia's favorite think tank.

Joe Stieb@joestieb.bsky.social

The quincy institute doing multiple events with noted far right lunatic joe kent is wildly irresponsible

Fun fact, the film adaptation of Oklahoma was shot in rural Arizona for several "grassy plains" shots, because in actual Oklahoma all those shots would have had oil derricks in them.

Eh. I think we can and should blame the cowardice of the Senate, and Biden's frankly terrible approach to coalitional morale. But we got here because we live in a deeply fallen nation with an electorate that is, or at least was, largely devoid of morality or virtue.

The crazy thing is, that there's a very easy out here that Conor doesn't want to take. (We should do DEI for white dudes homemaking and pink collar jobs)

Michael Hobbes@michaelhobbes.bsky.social

He is inches away from endorsing trigger warnings for white men reading job listings

He actually does identify a problem. And one that I think people underrate. But he is deliberately avoidant of the solutions. Because they require actually being liberal.

the idea that a city's social services should be paid for one-by-one by these insane discretionary deals on a development-by-development basis is just madness. it's such a tremendous drain on the general prosperity in return for ???

"libertarian candidate for state senate in north carolina is currently in a shootout with the cops and live-tweeting his planned suicide", while not exactly surprising, is still a weird thing to read

Look, I've seen this stance a lot. And it is fundamentally wrong. "These children should just have to be unpaid tutors of their classmates" is an incredibly toxic perspective. If only because 99% of the time they're not particularly good at it.

Ann Leckie@annleckie.com

"But what do we do with the gifted kids, they'll just sit in class and twiddle their thumbs?" I don't know, I guess it's impossible for them to help their classmates, or work on a project in class that uses their curiosity and also teaches their classmates something. <shrug> Guess we can't!

If you're gonna advocate for this, you also need to be advocating for a hell of a lot of guardrails. Because as the QS show, a lot of folks have suffered immense pain and harms from your "ideal" system.

Also, for the love all that is good, stop treating classes of children as means and not worthy of care and support themselves. (There's an entire separate diatribe I can explore on LRE here, but won't)

This is an interesting argument to watch in the comments and also back along the original thread because Almost everyone in it is right which leads to some feral behavior (approving) in the comments from both side Our kids WILL do better as individuals and collectively if they learn to do

Teaching is a skill. We require teachers to have college degrees and professional certifications. We acknowledge that reading intervention, math intervention, and special education require even more specialized certifications. This is not something we should be outsourcing to bored seven year olds.

Wandering Hoo reposted

I mean we should drop the 'gifted' language because that sucks, but just like 'academic focused' is fine. That's a thing, kids have different skills.

This isn't really fair to gifted kids who aren't trained teachers and don't know how to teach. It's also not fair to the kids who are struggling and need actual, targeted instruction from an adult who knows how to help kids with learning difficulties.

True: if you’re a small ‘c’ conservative who believes in “Chesterton’s fence,” Trump has turned you into a Democrat. For many, that change will be permanent. Further, each year there isn’t a course correction, more and more people will switch.
