Very excited about AlpineBSD :> Like linux, it seems like it genuinely might be easier for me to use/set up/work with than the more well-trodden, more maximal approach ๐Ÿ˜‚ wish me luck

my apartment gives me an outlook email account, where I receive mail pickup codes, which I cannot forward out of outlook. Needless to say it's the worst thing ever But also! They have assigned me cybersecurity training. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

So hard, I guess, that no one really bothers to do it very much outside of like coreutils basically lmao

The complexity that exists between actual hardware, operating systems, and compilers is kinda fascinating. There's a quine hiding somewhere in there...

There are systems like DuskOS that seem to be able to manage it all within a few thousand lines, and that is necessarily possible based on how resource-constrained all computers used to be? But no still-usable unix is like that. Really though I'm probably just not good enough at this yet. :P

I denormalized the build system today and it made it substantially shorter and easier to understand, and actually counterintuitively reduced the amount of redundant code? It's ~1000 lines rn, including the beginnings of a multicall binary system that makes it easy to build single applets at a time:3

lord give me the strength to nap every day at like 4pm after my meal, like my body begs me to do, which I ignore nearly every time ๐Ÿ™

anyone able to invite me to lobste.rs? It seems like the platform has improved since the vibecoding tag got removed recently and I wanna try participating ๐Ÿ™

Wait, is it possible to make a shell using only shell scripting? I guess it'd be pretty painful because you'd also need to implement every program you use in the shell too, for it to really count..

My build system is basically dogfoodable now! Although it's not very ergonomic yet. It's cool to basically have replaced make for how I use it :)

I have such mixed feelings about lobste.rs. on one hand, cool tech stuff sometimes! On another hand, way too much low-effort slop recently. Also a general ambivalence towards (read: support of) everything AI and a suppression of criticism towards it.

I've been on the edge of stopping checking it altogether for a while, I just haven't figured out anything close to a replacement yet. I think the broad-exposure-to-tech-things it provides is extremely valuable so I don't want to lose that, I just also HATE all the slop

Nix is my worst nightmare. It's like if you took everything I hate the most and made that the *only* thing there was (unrelatedly to the previous vaguing)

my website (y1.nz) exploded bc I stopped paying hetzner bc idfc. I will be putting up a very terse replacement and probably generally being more private on the internet, in light of the way the internet is going ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ

my fedi is also down and I am unlikely to replace it until I basically rewrite snac entirely. Sooooo bye ig ๐Ÿ˜‚

The little thread of old non-shell command-line programs like "mail" & "ftp" & "ed" is really interesting to me. It's a window into a different world. I have mixed feelings about them: they're opaque, and larger than they need to be. But they're also snappy and user-respecting in a way nothing ev->

I tried to use NetBSD and failed to use NetBSD. The installer used a compiled binary program, which was failing out because my screen was too short & of course the man pages were not accessible, and I don't remember what combination of calls one must use with wsconsctl and wsfontload to change the->

The fact that so few parts are reusable out of a laptop kills me. They absolutely could have made them all uniform enough to be widely reusable,,,, they just fucking didn't, because they don't care. I hate how much no one cares

JESUS CHRIST gitlab is so fucking bad now Trying to get a git server hosted in a way that wasn't *complete* ass was like the whole point of my journey into low-level shit......... I've come a very long way and holy FUCK do I hate gitlab now. When I had seen it before, I had blamed myself for not->

MESS, the repository URL that used the "git" scheme, which thankfully worked. But how do you mess it up this bad. What the fuck is wrong with us

being able to make sense of it, for not Getting It. But like?? This isn't designed to be understood, it's designed to look plausible and nice and clean but at the same time is a complete mountain of useless UI garbage. There are nested tabs everywhere with no clear indication of what will be where->
