A reminder of how our music/age perceptions need updating -- a London council is offering a "day disco for over 55s" featuring music from 1950s, 60s and 70s But if you're 56 years old, most of that is your parents' music, not yours.

The Home Office refused twice as many student visas on the first half of 2026 as they previously, while halving the % of visa rejections universities can have before they're not allowed to ti recruit international students. Are those refusals on good grounds? Oh no, not at all.

Margot Finn@eicathomefinn.bsky.social

Death by a thousand cuts as universities revoke international offers "en masse" of prospective students from Bangladesh, Nigeria and Pakistan to avoid losing ability to recruit international students. More job losses and course closures predicted in consequence. giftarticle.ft.com/giftarticle/...

The annual murder-gonk cull is upon us. I hate these things with a passion. Every year at my old job, we'd be instructed to destroy them on sight because they're a massive fire & cancer risk. I've ripped the heads off so many, I feel like some kind of elven serial killer. www.gov.uk/product-safe...

But unlike a David Lynch production, you can't turn it off if you're not enjoying it, nor do you know when it will be over.

America right now is the maddest place on earth. Like watching a David Lynch film.

You may not relish the tech being forced into every element of your life – but don’t worry, the made-up voters advising government think it’s a great idea! More A-EYE in the new Private Eye, out now.

Does my Speak-n-Spell feel pain when I type O-U-C-H? The jury is out. Philosophers and neuroscientists say that's fucking stupid, but I called a guy from the Center for Pretending that Household Electronics Are Sentient and he said there's no way to know for sure.

TL;DR: using compression before encryption is much weaker than we thought. Tiny length differences can be amplified - almost without limit - and noise-based or bucketization countermeasures are then easy to bypass. Joint work with @prefix-free.bsky.social and Lenka Mareková, to appear at CCS 2026.

I feel terribly sad for all those old-school Economy 7 teleswitch meters still out there, listening for a radio signal to switch them into off-peak mode that will never ever come now that they've switched off BBC Long Wave. Like V'Ger in Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

Watching this Apple event tout how iPhones will soon be able to record ambient audio/conversations and transcribe "high level notes" for you. It's billed as private and end-to-end encrypted, but I think the bigger harm is the normalization of always-listening devices. It's creepy and not normal.

Also bizarre that those people who profess to feeling so threatened by hijabs and burkhas are so comfortable wearing balaclavas.
