@motherjones.com recently published a profile of the Vera Institute’s work (and of Vera Action, the independent c4) to challenge harmful “tough-on-crime" politics and champion an approach that centers safety, accountability, and justice. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

As violence has fallen dramatically in New Orleans, experts point to investments like trauma recovery and mobile crisis response. Our message to leaders considering the 2027 city budget: don’t cut the programs that have worked to keep New Orleans safe. thelensnola.org/2026/10/21/n...
CORCA is a bill moving through Congress that would expand federal surveillance powers under the guise of fighting organized retail theft. As concerns about privacy grow, so does uncertainty about the bill's future. Here's what you need to know: www.vera.org/news/corca-l...
Finding employment after incarceration was already hard, but bias in AI hiring tools is making the job search more difficult. Policymakers must act now to prevent unfairly excluding applicants with conviction histories.
Technical lags, blocked document reviews, and disconnected judges—compounded by ongoing immigration court crises like judge turnover and massive case dockets—further strip away the chance of a fair hearing.
Supporters in Congress and the retail lobby frame CORCA as necessary legislation to combat organized retail theft. In reality, it would expand the federal government's surveillance powers without making us safer. Get the facts:
“I had suffered from domestic violence. But the one who ended up in trouble was me.”—Leya, an immigrant who survived domestic abuse

Drawing on journalist Maurice Chammah’s series on the epic story of music in American prisons, @themarshallproject.org's one-night event "Redemption Songs Live" explores how genres from the blues to soul to rap have offered paths to rehabilitation, resistance, and hope for people behind bars.
This exploration spans from the Jim Crow South to ICE detention centers today. 🎟️ The live music and storytelling event is on October 28. Buy your tickets now before it’s too late! www.kaufmanmusiccenter.org/mch/event/re...
“Their appointments, alongside the leadership of Chair Jennifer Jones Austin, should give all New Yorkers the confidence that police will be held to an appropriately high professional and ethical standard as they do the important work of keeping us safe.” Our full statement:
📢 Mass surveillance doesn’t make us safer. Congress is trying to pass a bill that would give ICE more surveillance power under the guise of fighting organized retail theft, but there’s still time to stop it. Tell your senators to say NO to CORCA: takeaction.vera.org/page/1003934...
ICE is opening a facility in Louisiana to hold children and families who choose voluntary departure. This is an increasingly common outcome under the Trump administration's mass deportation campaign, a choice that many are forced to make without a lawyer.
At the Annual Legislative Conference, Vera co-hosted a roundtable discussion about safety and justice with the @cbc.house.gov Foundation. Joined by advocates, leaders, and lawmakers, we discussed what it truly takes to keep our communities safe: community-led strategies that prevent crime.
We asked our partners and members of Congress what it means to be serious about safety and why having both safety and justice is imperative toward building thriving communities. @repsummerlee.bsky.social @repshontelbrown.bsky.social @ceoworks.bsky.social Here’s what they said...
"Effective, accountable policing alongside comprehensive crime prevention was a cornerstone of Mamdani’s campaign. It must remain the guiding principle of his administration." Vera's Insha Rahman and Hans Menos on public safety in a @nydailynews.com op-ed:
ICE and DHS agents’ reckless operations bypass due process and tear families apart, subjecting Americans to racial profiling, unlawful home entries, and violent arrests. New reporting by @propublica.org uncovers the full scope and the significant human toll of federal immigration enforcement ⬇️
In New Orleans, where city budget cuts are inevitable, residents remain united in one thing: the city should direct its dollars toward programs that directly support the community and keep people safe, like affordable housing and youth services.
Join Vera and the Future of Public Safety Initiative at John Jay College in New York City on November 17 for #AllInForSafety, a full-day national summit showcasing cities driving innovation in community safety. RSVP now to secure your spot: https://verajohnjay.regfox.com/all-in
In #Arizona, a one-year-old baby appeared without a lawyer to file an asylum application. In #Texas, a seven-year-old agreed to voluntarily leave the country. In 55 percent of nearly 50,000 immigration cases closed by August, unaccompanied minors faced deportation without legal representation.
Without legal counsel to guide them through complex court proceedings, children face fast-tracked deportations entirely alone, unaware of the life-altering consequences. To learn more about the impacts of children’s declining access to legal representation, click here ⬇️
Flock cameras were sold to us as a safety measure—instead they’ve been tools for stalking and harassment. Vera President Insha Rahman joined @themaxburns.bsky.social and @lincolnsquare.media to discuss how surveillance tech betrays public trust and makes us less safe:
Defunding legal aid groups, leaving separated families without resources, and targeting refugee and humanitarian status: The Trump administration has systematically eroded due process, attacking not just our communities, but also the people committed to ensuring their safety.
Despite "tough-on-crime" rhetoric at the federal level, states across the political spectrum are leading the charge toward a system that delivers safety, justice, and accountability. Vera's new report breaks down state-level progress on criminal justice reform in 2026:
Conditions in the jails on Rikers Island are dangerous and inhumane—far past the point of repair. Too many people leave Rikers more unstable than when they came in, which makes us all less safe. We encourage New York City’s effort to close Rikers on the fastest timeline possible.

We cannot let the mass deportation dragnet continue to terrorize our communities. Democracy and accountability depend on a system built on safety and justice that protects, not harms. A system that strengthens neighborhoods, not tears them apart. Our full statement ⬇️
The U.S. immigration court system is intended to provide a fair judicial process, yet the Trump administration’s latest plan does the opposite: assigning Department of Health and Human Services attorneys to represent unaccompanied migrant children in immigration court.
As crime rates plummet nationally—a trend experts attribute to comprehensive safety investments—Republicans continue to bash Democrats for being "soft on crime." But voters see right through it. The political reign of "tough on crime" is coming to an end.
The takeaway for all candidates in this year’s midterms: stop wasting valuable campaign funds on unhelpful "tough on crime" rhetoric when poll after poll shows that a "serious about safety" message works better with voters.
