I wrote about how small, independent coffee shops in Minnesota have been standing up to ICE and protecting their communities. Big brands like Starbucks and Caribou Coffee, meanwhile, have been doing the opposite. #CoffeeSky

thepourover.coffeeCommunity vs. Complicity: How Coffee Shops Have Responded to ICE's Minnesota OnslaughtIndependent coffee shops are speaking up for their neighbours and saying no to ICE in their stores. Some big coffee brands, however, have taken a different approach.

Joyeux anniversaire to French composer Éliane Radigue (b.1932) who turns an incredible 94 years of age today! Her work is proof that subtlety can be seismic, and that the smallest shift can change everything. Long live sustained tones, deep attention and Éliane Radigue!

Willie has been in prison for 43 years now, essentially for stealing $9 when he was 25. We have been running a Spotfund campaign to fund his canteen account, buy him sneakers, etc. The money is also used to fund a lawyer to help release him from prison. www.spotfund.com/story/2d235e...

"Then there is Blixa Bargeld : a pair of bulging eyes on a stalk. His body is so thin you fear the guitar strap cutting into his collar bone must be the cause of the torments he voices." The Wire 11/85, review of a Neubauten concert in London, one of the first non-jazz articles in the magazine.

"The current perception seems to be that a release is less visible when it’s not on the glorified vinyl format. The LP is a recognised, relevant medium dripping in nostalgia and excitement. The CD doesn’t have quite the same allure." - @imprec.bsky.social from www.thewire.co.uk/in-writing/e...

At $16 for a liter this is a damn fine #riesling from the #mosel. Steinmetz never disappoints, even his entry-level wine has beautiful character.

Trayvon Martin dreamed of flying airplanes. But he was killed in a racist murder in 2012. His death sparked a national conversation about racial profiling &, following the acquittal of his killer, the #BlackLivesMatter movement. Happy birthday, Trayvon. #TheMarchContinues

I can't get over the fact that Robert Hübner mastered Finnish just because he wanted to be able to chat with his Finnish pals. I've been struggling to learn Javascript for a decade, not getting anywhere. He even ended up translating books from Finnish into German. He was a great chess player.

The diversity of characters in Mann’s Magic Mountain astounds me every time I read it. It’s not just Castorp or Settembrini - every personality in this book is portrayed with so much creative insight that each could easily be the protagonist of its own book. Pure magic. #thomasmann #zauberberg

The similarities b/w FIDE and the Republican Party are striking. Both live deeply in the past, both have turned into a hopeless circus and both are utterly dominated by an egocentric individual with little to no respect for others.

Congratulations to both Magnus Carlsen and Ian Nepomniachtchi on winning the joint 2024 FIDE World Blitz Championship title! For the first time ever in World Chess Championship history, two players agreed to share the title! https://lichess.org/broadcast/-/AQ28hmmO

I am 2/3 through the fascinating #coffee history "Where the Wild Coffee Grows". After learning about coffee's origin in #Ethiopia in part 1, following its sensational tour through the rest of the world in part 2 I now return to Kafa, which, apparently, holds the key to coffee's future.

Went to a public screening of This is National Wake in New York. Beautiful film about a South African punk band during Apartheid. Now that the Dark Age is back in America This is National Wake gave me back a glimpse of hope. www.thisisnationalwake.com #nationalwake
