We particularly enjoyed (and were amazed by) how kids took to having the street become their playground: running through piles of leaves, chalking rainbows and smiley faces, and playing games - all where once there were only vehicles. Our priorities matter, and our built environments should respond.

After so many years of advocating for just such a change that we were finally able to bring about with the help of so many from our community, you summarized the effort so beautifully in one video. It brought tears of joy. Thank you, Juan!

What if The Ave put people before cars? 🚶‍♀️🚲 @juanjpg.bsky.social’s video connects Victor Steinbrueck’s vision for people-friendly streets with today’s joyful Ave for All pilot by @udistrict.org—where neighbors gather, play, shop, and reclaim the street as a public space. Watch: youtu.be/fM89OYvlPg4

Last Saturday, one block of The Ave belonged to people. Tomorrow is the last day. Oct 17, 11am to 8pm, University Way NE between NE 42nd and 43rd. Free. Games, giant chess, live music, cafe seating, farmers market nearby. Light rail is a block away. theaveforall.org

Rain wins again. Tonight's Outdoors On The Ave (Carrie Jennings + Clueless) at The Square at U District Station is canceled due to weather. Thanks for your patience, and stay dry. Updates to come.

The U District is short more than five acres of public open space, and about 70% of households have no car. The street is one of the few places left to gather. This pilot shows one block built for people, not parking.

92% of respondents rated the weekend 4 or 5 stars. The report covers attendance methodology, survey results, arrival mode, and preliminary business feedback. Fall watch parties resume in September. With support from the Seattle Office of Arts and Culture @seaofficeofarts

During the championship final, the crowd filled the plaza and spilled into the closed street. We do not read that as a capacity failure. We read it as demand evidence. The U District needs more room for people, and it needs it at the station.

A local shop owner opposes our Main Street becoming a pedestrian destination, and that it should remain ‘grab and go’ by car. This same business sponsors an annual weekend street closure to attract patrons but somehow misses the similarity of purpose.

Melissa & Chris Bruntlett@modacitylife.com

Plante’s political insight was to frame pedestrianisation not as a sacrifice, but as economic development policy. Her argument was clear: a shopping street can either attract cars or people. It can't effectively do both. When shops can no longer compete on convenience, they must do it on experience.

Once again: close an area to cars, business *increases*. Every time. And yet every new proposal to close an area to cars meets the same resistance from business owners. I'm starting to wonder whether business owners really are rational self-interest maximizers, I tell you!

Madrid closed its central business district to cars for the first time during the 2018 Christmas period. The result was a 9.5% increase in retail spending on Madrid’s main shopping street, the Gran Vía. Plus there was a 71% drop in air pollution. Via @carltonreid.com in @forbes.com. #UrbanTruth

The Transportation Committee just voted 5-0 to put Shared Streets into the city code, and I couldn’t be happier to vote yes! This represents an amazing opportunity to make our streets safer by giving priority to people, not cars, and by allowing us to lower the speed limit to 10 MPH.

The best way to anticipate future needs in our rapidly growing dense urban center? Try a pilot and survey those who show up.

May 30 and June 6, show up and show the city car-free spaces are in high demand!

Submit Survey Now > udistrict.org/safe-crossing. Councilmember Rivera is asking for constituent feedback by February 25 (today) on where to spend $2m on transportation safety in District Four. A Safe Crossing over Interstate 5 on NE 45th Street is long overdue.
