Our newest research project focuses on how municipal rules and processes impact the construction and cost of housing. With an issue that is so pressing and so multi-faceted, we have to be honest about the tradeoffs being made with design, zoning, and planning regulation. buff.ly/jWFosmd

2. Renters in the secondary market (condos, basement suites, etc) are paying more on average than renters in purpose-built apartments. Secondary market rentals are also the less secure one: a rented condo or house can be sold, or reclaimed for the owner's use, at any time.

Can you afford an extra $560/month in housing costs? Despite all the discourse around rents falling, new CMHC/StatCan data shows tenants who have to move from an average two-bedroom in Vancouver can expect to pay $560 more per month to find another place. It's $490 more in Toronto. buff.ly/ETmyRDX

Research published by CAEH shows that as the lowest-cost rentals become more expensive and scarce in a city, homelessness goes up. Across Canada, there is just a 1.6% vacancy rate for rentals under $750/month, and homelessness has surged over 100% in the last several years. buff.ly/T0Dw5zM

Non-market housing is much easier and cheaper to build on public land. @ubchart.bsky.social just launched their BC public lands map, a unique resource identifying where tens of thousands of affordable houses can be built. An important & unique tool to help build genuinely affordable housing.

It's live. The BC Public Lands Map is publicly available. Every piece of public land in BC, parcel by parcel, assessed for housing potential. (1/2)
