Every October I mean to do this, and every October, I forget until we're like a week or two into the month. But not this year! Each day of this month I'm going to post a horror movie I love. I love horror movies in general, and I should make more posts online to help profess that love.

Day 25: Secuestrados/Kidnapped -- Home invasion is a pretty common horror/thriller premise, but this one is uncommonly well made. Lots of long takes are used, including some cool splitscreen shots that eventually merge seamlessly into a single shot. This one's brutal and unforgettable.

Day 26: Let the Right One In -- Overall, my favorite vampire story. I've watched both movies (the original is better) and read the book. In a way, it's a kind of love story, but not romanticized. It has more to do with dysfunctional personalities and crippling trauma

Day 23: Videodrome -- What the hell, let's make it a Cronenberg triple feature. This is one of his best-known, but imo still deserves even more credit both for being a great reality-questioning sci-fi story, and accurately predicting the rise of edgy torture horror movies around the 2000s.

Day 24: The Substance -- Why yes, I am a fan of body horror and disturbing practical effects. Why do you ask? I've heard some say this movie beats you over the head with its messages and symbolism, and I think that's great. It's like it's shouting "Don't you assholes get it yet??"

Day 22: Scanners -- Another Cronenberg pick, and my third consecutive title ending with -ers. If people know this movie for anything, it's the exploding head gif, but it's also a fascinating sci-fi plot, and I just learned recently that there are sequels which I may check out in the near future.

Day 20: Sinners -- Another newer entry on the list, but one that I've already watched multiple times. Usually "spectacle" is the name of the game among horror movies I love, but this is one that I love more for the richness of the character writing and overall story.

Day 17: Resolution -- This will probably be the most understated movie on my list this year. It has considerably less spectacle than most of my other favorites, and almost leans more into paranormal/mystery than "horror." But it accomplishes a lot with a little, and the ending was unforgettable.

Day 18: Silent Hill -- This was my first formal exposure to the Silent Hill franchise, and I've always maintained that it's not only a great horror movie, but maybe the best movie adapting a video game. I think fans of the games tend to feel differently, but I went in knowing nothing about them.

Day 15: Suspiria (2018) -- That's right, I actually prefer this one to the original. That so rarely happens with remakes, and especially horror remakes that nobody asked for. But this director clearly cared about the material, and set out to make something much greater than a niche nostalgia-bait.

Day 16: Backrooms -- Sure to be the most recent release that makes my list this year. As someone who has known about the backrooms meme as long as it's been around, I've never had that much interest in it, and didn't think it sounded like a compelling movie idea, but it earned a place among my faves

Day 12: Mandy -- A psychedelic hillbilly cult, hellraiser demons on 4-whelers, dueling chainsaws, Cheddar Goblin... What DOESN'T this movie have? I've never seen anything like Mandy, but man I wish I had seen a lot more movies like Mandy

Day 13: Dead Alive -- Before Lord of the Rings, we all knew Peter Jackson for making just the GOOPIEST zombie movie around. Highlights include a famous lawnmower scene, and some fantastic lines, my favorite of which is probably "Your mother ate my dog!"

Day 10: Possession -- I think in recent years, awareness of this movie has grown considerably. All you really need to know about it is that one of the opening credits reads "Special Effects for The Creature" which is as good as huge red text reading "banger alert"

Day 11: Possessor: First Possession, now Possessor. Yeah. I was skeptical of the son of a well-known horror director directing his own horror movies, but Brandon Cronenberg has the sauce. This one is both physically and spiritually brutal, in a style similar to but unique from Cronenberg senior.

Day 8: Cabin in the Woods -- It's hard to even gather screenshots of this movie without spoiling what makes it so much fun to watch, but iykyk. I wish another team could take a crack at the IP, because the back half is such a blast that I'm left wanting more every time I watch it.

Day 9: Planet Terror -- It's like the sensibilities of a B-movie but made with an actual budget, talent, and care. It's full of self-aware corny one-liners and gooey zombie gore blasting all over. Robert Rodriguez is one of my favorite directors because he simply will not permit you to be bored.

Day 6: Hereditary -- Yes, I do sometimes enjoy horror that isn't a monster movie. I love how it initially seems like it'll just be a story about tragedy and trauma, then it takes a sharp turn and goes off the deep end, all the way into a super bizarre and eerie finale

Day 7: Detention -- I have no words to sufficiently describe this movie. It's like if you took Scream and Not Another Teen Movie and piled on a million layers of maybe-self-aware post-ironic-meta-satire that results in simultaneously the smartest and dumbest thing you've ever seen. I adore it.

Day 4: Mad God -- My favorite kinds of special effects are practical. Makeup, stop-motion, puppetry. And this movie is basically a massive effects showcase. Minimal dialogue, minimal story, just fascinating hellish nightmare imagery. This literally gave me nightmares for like two weeks.

Day 5: The Thing (1982) -- Have I mentioned yet that I love practical monster effects? Well, they don't get much better than this. Part of me wishes this could have become a longer-running franchise, because there's so much potential for creative creature designs baked into in the premise.

Day 2: Poltergeist -- Even before Evil Dead 2, this was one of the first horror movies I fell in love with. We had a VHS of it when I was a kid, and even though it was super spooky, I was fascinated with it due to the variety of special effects and imaginative scares.

Day 3: Dawn of the Dead (1978) -- For me (and a lot of people) this is THE zombie movie. Basically every zombie story since this one has inherited some of its DNA. It's not just horror, but social satire, apocalypse survival, and some segments of good old fashioned unbridled fun!

Day 1: Evil Dead 2 -- This is the movie that made me a die-hard horror movie lover. I caught it on cable one day knowing basically nothing about it, and I was instantly transfixed, because it is spooky chaos from beginning to end. Everybody knows and loves this one already, and for good reason
