The name of New Mexico is funny because it's one of those things that you'd think is really simple (oh, it's it used to be part of old Mexico, so we'll call it New Mexico!), but it's much more complex New Mexico as the name for the area predates Mexico by several hundred years!
But, like, New America wouldn't make any sense because this is still the original America and... You know what, forget it

I think one thing people are missing here is that Anthropic and OpenAI have been fearmongering about this happening because of open-weight models provided by Chinese companies. They're not saying "we're going to ruin your life", they're saying "you need to put us in charge of this life-ruining tech"
I keep trying to think of any historical example where a given technology's PROMOTERS AND TRUE BELIEVERS were like 'we are absolutely going to ruin your fucking life so be prepared like it's the end of the world'

It's not hard. Both Yglesias moderates and Khanna leftists give MAGA politicians legitimacy because they want MAGA's base. Ossoff simply does not give a shit about the MAGA base, which allows him to speak with fierce clarity about MAGA politicians. He is willing to bet on an anti-MAGA majority.
Figuring out why Ossoff is so effective is an interesting task. I think he's mastering a kind of stern dignity that is uniquely compelling in contrast to the clownish cruelty of the other side. I think the other person who's kind of hit on the same thing is AOC, though in a different register

Replying to @mattweiner19.bsky.social
the chump theory paper is in analytic philosophy-speak, so here's a try to sum up the basic points without all the philosophy inside baseball: when there's a fact that people are trying to make controversial, they often point to reason-shaped things that aren't reasons, if you're well informed.

Is "consuming" media what we would call it when we communicate over the internet? We do more than consume on the internet. Is every person we interact with on the internet our "friend"? We interact with more than friends on the internet. Zuckerberg-level mendacity
Can social media be addictive? @taylorlorenz.bsky.social says no. βYou wanting to communicate and chat with your friends every day is not an addiction,β says Lorenz. βAnd to frame it that way is incredibly harmful and anti-science.β

She adds, "But Republicans have made it a big attack on you," which is a telling statement. Stated simply: We don't find it newsworthy either, but it's our job to use talking points from one side and parrot them back to the other side. If not, we'll be accused of bias. (Also, my boss is Bari Weiss)
Abdul El-Sayed: "Weijia, with all due respect, this is the third time you've asked about a Twitch streamer ... their whole game is to make us fight culture wars so that we don't pay attention to the fact the president has made $2.2 billion ... "

Keep this in mind the next time someone shows you a map of those big empty chunks of the country colored red. We have been plodding towards this end ever since we baked the land vote into the structure of our government.
Meta is testing robots that can plug in cables, reset servers, and handle other tasks inside its data centers, according to several current and former workers familiar with the projects.

I find this argument incoherent--Mr. Craig seems to be approaching from the position that top two increases polarization, but the person he's quoting is complaining that it limits the flank of the party because Republicans give an edge to the moderate. Which is it?
It's a bad system, perhaps the only idea genuinely and unambiguously worse than traditional FPTP and party primaries. I'm an electoral reform nerd and I would vote against it. California's very likely to repeal it soon, it's been such a complete failure.
