Funding intercity public transportation is crucial for Canada's social, economic, and environmental goals. Read more about our 2026 federal budget submission here: buff.ly/v8Qmzjd 📸 Courtesy VIA Rail
Building a high speed rail stop in Kingston should be welcomed, but only if integrated with existing VIA Rail service, otherwise it risks both Alto and VIA. Read more about our letter to Minister MacKinnon here: buff.ly/FZO5bxJ 📸 Nelso Silva (altered) | cc BY-SA

The federal government has announced that they are seriously considering adding a stop in Kingston to the Alto HSR project. We are very pleased that the government seems to be listening to public and professional feedback. buff.ly/8FztNEy
Hurrah! 🎉 The Washington DOT has announced the opening of a pre-clearance facility for passengers at Vancouver's Pacific Central Station— a first ever in North America. Read more to learn just how long this journey has been ⤵️ buff.ly/tKv00a0 📸 David Wilson, CC By-SA

The International Union of Railways has released a report confirming what we have been saying for years: transferring revenue risk to the private sector simply doesn't work, and the public is left to eat the cost anyway. 🧵 1/4 (Paywall) buff.ly/JBDCl4l

Alberta has released its passenger rail masterplan. While promising, the prospect of tangible progress seems to be waning as the province has announced what amounts to 3 more years of "engagement with industry" and planning. Find it here: www.alberta.ca/passenger-rail
If you would like to help us continue our advocacy for passenger rail in Alberta, please consider donating and becoming a member so that we can work to build the transportation network that Canadians deserve. buff.ly/Br3gaRy
While this is great to see, we must wonder why the public has had to wait until a project was completed to develop something that might have been planned from the get-go with a transit-builder that actually worked closely with the public sector. montrealgazette.com/news/montrea...
It's hard to measure the effects of public projects that are planned in such a myopic manor, but this is a clear example of what we miss out on.
We would like everyone to consider how much the public has benefitted since the privatization of CN in 1995: Reduced passenger services? ✔️ Reduced freight capacity? ✔️ Greater private profit? ✔️ www.policyalternatives.ca/news-researc...
Social policy affects transportation just as much as any other policy area, from transit to freight. While it is good to see some social responsibility, this move to curb homelessness across its network is an admission that just like public transit, it affects the bottom line.
Mark your calendars, @VIA_Rail's annual public meeting will be on July 16th at 4p.m. EDT. x.com/VIA_Rail/sta...
🎉 🚲️ Bikes are back on VIA Rail!! 🚲️ 🎉 We love to see such a popular option brought back for travellers, though we're a bit disappointed that it took so long. Read more from VIA: media.viarail.ca/en/press-rel... 📸 Jeangagnon Wikimedia
Marathon has received a federal grant to build a new port. Being so close to the CP mainline, we think it would be foolish to build a new port without a rail link. Less freight hitting the rails means more emissions and more trucks on already taxed Northern ON. highways. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...
The recent opening of the REM Anse-à-l’orme branch is a game changer for Montreal. However, how riders are to actually get to those stations leaves a lot to be desired. www.transportaction.ca/topics/urban...
@TransLink, @TTChelps, and the @STM have banded together to request the federal government: -Reverses the $5bn cut to the public transit development fund announced last year -Streamlines project approvals for the fund -Commits to maintain the fund in the long-term
'Major projects' require long-term planning, sustainable funding enables that. We hope the federal government agrees. Read the pre-budget submission here: buff.ly/6QvTRD5
Scott Reid should be holding the government to account for the promises made to protect and improve local services alongside Alto, rather the pretending those promises don't exist. www.standard-freeholder.com/news/eastern...

Suggestion for a "major project" that could directly improve a terrible situation along Highway 16 in BC: Regional public transit. Frequent, affordable buses. So people don't have to hitchhike. @mark-carney.bsky.social @davidebybc.bsky.social #cdnpoli #bcpoli www.aptnnews.ca/national-new...

What would it take to restart passenger rail service from North Vancouver to Whistler? A healthy dose of political willpower and willingness to recognize the benefits for local communities. Resort workers would be major beneficiaries of a train. vancouversun.com/news/how-to-...
Fourth Line, Chartwell Road, and Kerr Street grade crossings in Oakville are ranked as some of the highest risk crossing in the country by Transport Canada and should be priorities for grade separation, with federal an provincial funding made available. www.insidehalton.com/news/oakvill...
We're pleased to see tangible progress on Hamilton LRT. We would be delighted to hear what lessons learned from Eglinton and Finch West have been applied to help keep the project budget and timeline "on track" for the community. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

A second ALTO station in the eastern GTA, in addition to Union, is what we have recommended. However, going to Union with 30-minute headways is not hard. Using the Don Branch, it could be done from the start, then upgraded later if necessary. www.thecanadianpressnews.ca/quebec/toron...
