As the gentry try to normalize transphobia in every avenue of life, a common talking point they love to share is the alleged high 'detransition' and 'regret' rates among trans people. These allegedly high rates are completely false, and based on bunk science. 🧵

In short, there is no evidence that regret for transitioning is a widespread phenomena. Even among studies that deliberately oversample detransitioners and that include work done by anti-trans actors, the majority of participants *still* don't do so because they stop being trans.

This is a complicated and multifaceted phenomena, and the right-wing will continue to misrepresent the science to oblivion if it means screwing over a minority. But don't forget -- the science unequivocally backs what trans people say about our own bodies and experiences.

Serano also did a comprehensive review of *every* study on the subject last year and found that the vast majority support the claim that detransition and regret are extremely low in their odds. The best studies, she noted, find regret rates between 1-3%. juliaserano.medium.com/lies-damned-...

And, it should be noted that the above results include studies that are explicitly by anti-trans authors such as Lisa Littman and that deliberately oversample anti-trans support groups. Meaning, even with the right-wing attempts to bias their research, their own results *still* contradict them.*

Andrea James of Transgender Map wrote a detailed article earlier this year that compiles all different resources, including both blogs for layman readers and academic papers for the more technical-minded, showing that these studies are flawed and, in some cases, authored by conversion therapists

transgendermap.com“Desistance”: a disputed concept – Transgender MapThe idea that it is possible to prevent or cure transgender people is a foundational belief of the anti-trans conversion therapy movement and the ex-transgender movement. A key concept used in these…

The research since then has not been kind to the debunked narrative about detransitioners. In 2021, researcher Jack Turban and colleagues studied over 27,000 people and found that only 2.4% of the 13% of the sample who reported detransitioning - yes, a fraction of a fraction...

...or for any number of other reasons. This is to say nothing about how transitioning is personalized and broad in its scope, with it ranging from changing one's name, clothes, and pronouns to taking hormones to taking surgery. Every trans person is different on their journey.

Many old studies on this subject will proclaim to find a high rate of detransitioning, desisting, and/or regret among their participants. These studies rely on tiny sample sizes and, in many cases, participants dropping out of the research as 'proof' that they stop being trans because of regret.

For instance, TNN's own @thefreeradical.org had periods where she went off HRT for months at a time owing to poverty, and briefly even tried (and failed) to repress being trans for a brief period out of fears of safety. Would she count as a detransitioner under many conservative definitions?

This is an issue elaborated on with more depth by @juliaserano.bsky.social in a detailed, yet concise, piece on detransition and how it manifests. Detransitioning does not inherently mean regret - one may detransition because of cost issues, because of fear of bigotry, because of their family...

Those who are politically minded will see parallels to rhetoric today. This is no coincidence. These movements aren't in isolation - many of the very groups that were behind this initial push, e.g. Family Research Council, Alliance Defending Freedom - are now pushing against trans rights today.

Nowadays, 'detransitioner' is the popular term among the right-wing, much in the same way that 'ex-gay' was a popular term used by conservatives in the 90's. This is a term that has no firm definition - what do we exactly count as a detransitioner?

Much of the original rhetoric on this subject came from groups that proclaimed themselves to be defending the 'traditional family' as well as many psychoanalysts believing that there was some pathology to it, often incorrectly trying to tie being queer to some latent trauma, claiming it can be fixed

For as long as trans people have been researched by academics, there has been a crowd insistent that we'll somehow eventually come to regret it, often as a push for conversion therapy. Much of this had its origins in the same set of far-right movements that pushed the same on cis gays & lesbians.

In 2009, the American Psychological Association conducted a detailed report on the subject, surveying all the available evidence They concluded that there is no proof that conversion therapy works for neither cis gays nor trans people, and that to the contrary, it is so harmful that it ruins lives.

Germany is quickly catching up to the US and UK in their fascist crackdowns of trans people. This Sunday, reports say police officers violently stormed and searched an important German transfem community space under allegations of providing prescriptions to third parties without authorization.

While we cover no shortage of dangers our communities are up against, TNN always tries to emphasize that people can always fight back, and many already are. This story's a good example. Interconnected trans and labor organizing have *a lot* of potential.

Like universities around the country, UW administrators are more interested in appeasing fascism than defying it. But the UAW-affiliated trans collective clearly sees how labor, trans and anti-racist fights collide, and are using innovative tactics to press forward in the face of official stalling.
