Please welcome our second new board member, Zac Morgan! Zac loves sharing ways to get around by foot, bike, and bus and lives in a one-car household. His goal is to help people to get out of their car, see our city from new perspectives, and be empowered to advocate for better transportation.

If you build it, they will ride. 🚲 Ridership on the 4th Street bike lane is up 60% since protections were installed. People ride when they feel safe. This didn’t happen by accident. It took years of advocacy, from groups like Transit Columbus pushing leaders to make projects like this a priority.

Help us fight for more by donating. We’re all-volunteer, grassroots organization. Your gift can mean another meeting, another bench at a bus stop, another educational video, another bill paid - it's what keeps this community-powered work going. πŸ’› πŸ”—: transitcolumbus.org/donate

Please welcome Olivia Hall, our new board secretary! Raised in a car-dependent suburb but now car-free, she's passionate about expanding access to and improving non-car transportation. She loves living where she can walk most places and wants to help others experience the joys of car-free travel.

As brought up in our meeting on Tuesday evening, here are four things you can do right now to support transportation, bike and pedestrian infrastructure, or green social housing in the region!

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us at our 4th Street Safe Streets ride with Yay Bikes! About fifty of us (and one dog!) rode to celebrate the progress in our bike infrastructure but also to grieve William Brewer, who was killed after being struck at the intersection of Summit and 19th.

Thanks to Lauren McFarland and Justin Goodwin, both with the Columbus Department of Public Service, and Mike Andrako with the Franklin County Engineer's Office, for joining the ride and sharing how projects move from idea to reality and what is coming next.

πŸ“£ Advocacy works! Public meetings and community engagement opportunities play a big role in shaping what gets built. Whether you attend or speak at a meeting, write a letter of support, or call local officials, your voice makes a difference in the future of bike and pedestrian infrastructure.

🚧 The city is developing a Quick Build Toolkit to tackle problem spots fast, without waiting years for a full rebuild. Intersections like Summit and 19th, where William Brewer was struck, are exactly what it was made for.

πŸšΆβ€β™€οΈ The Franklin County Engineer's Office is focusing on better connections between municipalities and on securing funding to keep expanding its work on bike and pedestrian safety, including Safe Routes to Schools.

Week Without Driving is over. How was it for you? πŸšΆβ€β™€οΈπŸšŒ For some, this was the first time really experiencing their own neighborhood without a car. What was your #WeekWithoutDriving like?

Why it matters: 1 in 3 people in the U.S. are nondrivers, including people w/disabilities, seniors, young people, and folks who can’t afford to drive or choose not to. WWD puts their needs in the spotlight and helps shape policies that get everyone where they need to go, no matter how they move. πŸ’ͺ

Did you run into frustrations or opportunities you hadn’t noticed before? Was there a sidewalk the whole way? Was your bus stop sheltered, well-lit, and accessible? How much extra planning did your day take? How would your route feel after dark or in bad weather? What could be improved?

Take action: share your story with #WeekWithoutDriving and contact your local officials. Name the one fix your route needs most, like a missing sidewalk, an unsheltered bus stop, or a crosswalk with no signal.

Advocacy Alert! Our pals at MORPC are working on their 2028–2055 Metropolitan Transportation Plan and need your thoughts on what transportation in Central Ohio should look like in the decades ahead! Tell them about your transportation needs, challenges, and ideas for the future!

Walk, ride, roll, or bus to our happy hour tonight to close out a Week Without Driving with Transit Columbus! We'll be meeting at 6:30 at the Villiage Idiot following the standing engagement meeting (6:00 at Northside Library). Can't make it? Share what you've learned this week in the thread!

Remember, this week wasn't about perfection but abour curiosity and noticing how removing driving felt for you. Did your bus get cancelled? Did a sidewalk randomly end on your way to get groceries? Did you feel safe biking to work?

These are challenges experienced daily by the 1 in 3 US residents who are nondrivers. Week Without Driving spotlights this to shape policies that get everyone where they need to go, regardless of how they move.

Week Without Driving starts winding to an end with Multimodal Monday! Use at least two non-car forms of transit throughout the day, such as walking, biking, or taking the bus! Post a photo, tag us, and use #WeekWithoutDriving.

Also, get ready for TC Tuesday tomorrow! Pick your favorite non-car mode of transit to get to the Village Idiot at 6:30 and celebrate WWD with the Transit Columbus crew, following the following the standing engagement meeting at 6:00 at Northside Library.

Heads up, Olentangy Trail users! Per our friends at Central Ohio Greenways, the trail will have two closures for improvements soon! The area near Olentangy Wetland Park will close from Thurs, 10/8, to Sat, 10/17, and the area near Tuttle Park will will close from Thurs, 10/22, to Sat, 10/31.

If you've walked or rolled through there, you know these areas are busy and have lots of tree roots, so we're excited for these improvements, despite the temporary inconveniences.

Fight the Sunday Scaries and get in some R&R before the start of the week! Share a photo of unwinding at the park, hanging out with friends, or doing whatever makes you feel rejuvenated - without using a car to get there! Post a photo, tag us, and use #WeekWithoutDriving.

Happy Shopping Spree Saturday! Today's challenge is to ditch your car and do some shopping! Maybe it's groceries, maybe it's a sweet treat, maybe it's some thrifting, anything is valid! Post a photo of you, your haul, and your non-car mode of transport, tag us, and use #WeekWithoutDriving.
