TIL it takes at most 5 years to properly indoctrinate a new Chicagoan. I bet it was done in two, though.

Daniel Knowles@dlknowles.bsky.social

Today marks five years that I have lived in Chicago. What that means, thanks to the vagaries of American immigration law, is that it is almost time to go home to London, where I will be covering Europe. It's been a time. I have learned a lot. I figured I'd write a bunch of it down:

Given the marathon, the DHS Blackhawk probably isn’t looking for “undesirables” as they do a 12th low & slow pass, but do we really need to traumatize the city like this?

Find a partner that cuts you off at the first "just" and suggests you step up and fucking parent your child.

I watched Dennis Rodman's Chicago Bulls era. I believe it entirely.

Joe Kassabian@jkass99.bsky.social

Honestly, anyone who followed Rodman's career leading up to the Kim Jong Un bromance isn't surprised by the idea he got blind drunk and shit on Kim's floor.

Nothing tops off a crummy day better than blowing out a condensate line clog, turning the blower on before sealing the gap, and standing over the pipe. I smell delightful now.

Sure didn't have 'get mom a draftkings account so she can keep getting insulin' on the bingo card

James Medlock@jdcmedlock.bsky.social

Republicans, in their infinite wisdom, left a big gambling loophole in the Medicaid work requirements. I'm no fan of the gambling industry, but if you are on Medicaid and struggling to deal with the work requirements, taking a $580 bet on both sides of an outcome is one way of getting around them.

AI doomer posts are not all wrong, but they're missing the point. AI won't create Skynet. AI will empower otherwise average-to-low skilled people, often white men, to take undue risk and do dumb shit that *will* hurt people.

Rare good news post

Jon Seidel@jonseidel.bsky.social

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer Luis Uribe is guilty on all counts. Ten counts of deprivation of civil rights under color of law, and one count of brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence.

A dear friend gave me a full case of hot mustard sauce for my birthday many years ago. It lasted for months. I both regret and appreciate the experience.

TIL I am a doorknob traditionalist, it is my new identity.

Joshua J. Friedman@joshuajfriedman.com

My favorite doorknobs are the ones the New York City public schools installed at the turn of the 20th century. You can still occasionally find one on eBay!

I enjoy watching the cool new gadgetry Apple is releasing, but I would still just like AirPods that don't fall out. I don't think my ears are THAT weird.

If you're going to point me at a document and ask me to solve your problem, at least trim the Claude prompt you used from the top. Removing the entirely-too-obvious Claudisms would probably lull me into believing it wasn't just slop, at least momentarily.

Am I expected to put actual thought into work the requestor has clearly not? Ugh. It has now been `0` days since I have last been asked to perform work by a robot.

As seen at MSI's Steelmaking exhibit, and as relevant to contemporary computer operation as it was in 1960s steelworking.

Brands make these moves and double down when they feel invincible. They are not. Apple Passwords. Bitwarden. Vaultwarden. KeePass. And so many others.

A few notes on Anthropic's new Claude Fable 5.1 - with Max thinking level I got the best SVG pelican I've had from any Anthropic model (at a hefty cost of $3.30!), which I then had it animate simonwillison.net/2026/Sep/1/c...

There should be an adult mode for discord. When companies start using it for community building I just shake my head in GenX and move on.

jenn da joker@jennschiffer.com

i think that because i am in my 40s i should get a pass on discord where i can open it without getting screamed at about orbs and whatever a mini vegeta bundle is

It has been `0` days since someone has dumped Claude output into an issue and yeeted it toward me for action. (If I wanted to talk to machines I'd go yell at my microwave. I'd rather a rudely written human issue than this shit.)

Ah yes, I see the 'ban cars' folk are out in force shaming parents driving their kids to school on their first day back. I love my cycling brethren, but this is not the way to get people on your side.

Art indeed

meanwhile..it is ironic that Sherwin Williams is a sponsor, because Sophie "I protect girls way way way on the perimeter" Cunningham, has never been within 10 feet of the paint.

I’m always excited by “bug fixes and performance improvements” but this week my (horrible) thermostat promises to deliver an updated “consent experience”(!!)

Enjoying the Chicago storm discourse here. Lots of basement/hallway/shelter seekers and such. Growing up in the 80s, a tornado watch or warning was my Dad's cue to open the garage door and set up a lawn chair to watch the storm and wave to neighbors doing same.

No better way to encourage volunteerism than the prospect of one day getting a memorial trash can and plaque

I reported a Chicago cop recklessly driving his cruiser. With multi-angle time stamped video. Clearly visible plate, locations, the works. Years later, the case was closed: they “lacked info on who was driving” Same excuse when an off duty flashed his gun bc he was mad at me. Cops are great.

🎃 It’s the Mid Pumpkin, Emily 🎃@lefttheprairie.bsky.social

It’s so funny when people are like “sure you’re an abolitionist now but wait until you’re the victim of a property crime.” Buddy, the most useful thing the police have ever done for property crime is put the form you need to submit to your insurance online.

Based on my personal experience it’s quite telling when your opponent’s instigator “leaves” post-discovery and pre-settlement. Optimistic for those unjustly fired. Good on them.

Karen Attiah@karenattiah.bsky.social

O’Neal helped purge me & all the other Black full-time staff columnists at the Post Opinion Section. I challenged his move to fire me in the aftermath of the Charlie Kirk killing. And he testified against me in June. We are expecting an arbitration ruling soon. Convenient time for him to quit.

Alongside the "Don't show me politics" button LinkedIn has had for awhile, "Looks like Slop" will also function like the close door button in an elevator.

That feeling when you know you’re typing back and forth with someone copy-pasting Claude output…is sadness, mostly. Nobody talks like this! I want your authentic self, errors and shorthand and regional slang and all! Stop it! (“Load bearing” mercifully not used, but might as well have been)

Do you know anyone at spinwheel.ai? They’re being used by loan scammers to steal identities. I’m having trouble getting anyone there to care. Would love to be connected to a human there.

Losing power for 14ish hours sucks on the fridge-clearing side, but having a clear dark sky to wonder at and no cell/internet to distract made up for it. I've never seen the sky like that before. True awe.

@sapphic-film-nerd.bsky.social I do t know you and have never interacted with you and am absolutely not anti indigenous or any of the other things you keep harassing me with by adding me to lists. What’s the deal? Why are you judging me? It’s sad just how incredibly wrong you are about who I am.

I love it when deleted Reddit comments of mine randomly come back, proving the already obvious: deleting just hides them.

Really feeling it for the neighborhood soccer bar that opened a couple of weeks ago. It was never a good biker bar, and now there’s families in matching colors streaming in and out instead of health code violations and angry drunk drivers.

This country will never have good infrastructure so long as it takes 8 workers nearly 17 hours to take a handful of letters off a building that three dudes and a cherry picker put up between lunch and dinner. Christ, we’re so cooked.

Four pool deck chairs just came crashing down on the alley below. Chicagoans, stay inside. That could’ve killed someone. These winds are no joke. Yikes!
