Mr. Met seen wearing a pitcher’s glove and throwing a baseball. The ball will be hit by a bat traveling at 70+ mph, delivering 15,000 Newtons of force. This ball, presumably one of Mr. Met’s own kin, will briefly experience 10,000 times its own body weight.

Completely dumbstruck by this. Entire books will be written about this movie. Somehow three hours was not long enough. You have to have the in-theater experience for this one.

Now seeing everything

I rewatched Midnight Cowboy last night and noticed something new: As Joe Buck is leaving his hometown, the words "John Wayne: The Alamo" appear above his head on a dilapidated movie theater marquee. This is clearly meant to symbolize the dissolution of the age of Westerns both

literally and figuratively. It's 1969, Westerns are a thing of the past ("You're beginning to smell...that great big cowboy crap of yours don't appeal to nobody"), Joe's hometown life has crumbled and so he tries to reinvent himself in New York City but a part of him remains

back in Texas on that broken marquee, a broken relic of the past that is out of place and incongruous with the modern world.

The tradeoff with aging is that you lose fluid intelligence but gain crystallized intelligence as you get older. But AI is fluid intelligence on demand, so being young may no longer be the intellectual advantage it once was. I wonder what the implications of this will be.

lowkey want to tell this to the one or two smart kids in each of my classes

I am really, really perplexed by my school's student body, who ostensibly have 90th+ percentile SAT scores yet can't draw a straight line without serious difficulty, or remember the most basic facts about things we spent 2 hours discussing

I'd like to retract this statement after seeing their midterms

Trying to make myself more relatable to my students by assuring them that I am just as dumb as they are

I’m having Claude help me make a programming assignment for my class and for the random seed it chose my course number. Who says these things don’t have a sense of whimsy!

Fun fact: I was supposed to meet with this guy this morning and he never showed up! Starting to sense a pattern here...

lmao how did I miss this. A group of cryptographers held an "secure" election using some fancy cryptography but one of the election trustees lost their decryption key and so the professional society of cryptologists couldn't figure out who won. Put it in Aesop's Fables!

Excited to share we’re raising our Series A 🚀 We’re building OTPKDaaS: one-time pad key distribution as a service. Perfect secrecy, finally at scale. If you’re an investor who gets crypto infra, my DMs are open.

very funny that the one group with the gift of prophecy in our lifetimes turned out to be a bunch of atheists

I’ve long felt like I am meant to be an old man and am just waiting around for my body to catch up

Starting a new series called Teak Talk. Have no idea what it will be about. No clue what the format or medium is either. Really have zero plans or ideas for what Teak Talk is or is supposed to be but it’s not every day a name that good falls in your lap.

How do I tell my irl friend that his Twitter account (government name, face pfp) is public and that this includes his Following list (me, a few other irl friends, Zohran Mamdani, 700 gay porn accounts)

I think I have the genetic mutation that makes cilantro taste like soap but also a separate genetic mutation that makes me really like it

Something really unsettling about watching someone present a Claudewritten paper and speak the Claudisms into existence in the real world

Point Roberts, WA is a U.S. exclave at the tip of a Canadian peninsula that barely crosses the 49th parallel. It is 5 sq miles and has a population of 1,191. There is a K-2 school on the U.S. side of the border but all other students must cross an international border 4x/day to go to school.

Asking the models if the destruction of palmyra by ISIS was a piece of transgressive conceptual art

Held a job interview yesterday and the interviewee showed up with an iced coffee. I wonder if they Knew.

The thing about videogames as a medium is that you spend so many hours on one game that a game can be a meaningful answer to "Where did you grow up?"
