My first go was to push/explore the sketch underneath further, which I did genuinely like a whole lot more - BUT as I was drawing this, I was coming up with another variation and idea that felt stronger composition wise:

another Scylla Publishing overview and this time we're looking at Aurora by Lyss Buchthal. This was a very different experience from other pieces in that I had a strong idea of what I wanted to show for the section, but I really didn't consider the space or the execution as well as I thought I had:

Thanks for everyone who came up to me at LBX about the tutorial zine I made these for. Gonna redo it while using it as an opportunity to do vis dev for my project Mythic and kind of 2 and 1 it!

I think between that and the VERY heavy solid black on the other work, we can see why the burger was chosen. Sometimes there’s just a clear winner and that clear winner is also really satisfying to draw to the point where you talk to your mum and say 'I drew a really good burger’ like you’re five.

I’ve not spoken much about it but I really wanted to hit that balance between ‘enough visual for you to get the vibe/interest in the story i’ve been enjoying for months’ & 'spoil everything in one go’, which means balancing between showing the big event before you enjoy or showing nothing at all.

And I think with Harzie Gets a Date this is where it’s the most obvious in the initial options. With these I wanted a core element with one feeling more 'literal’ and the other (still a part of the scene) a little more evocative - a pool of blood, bitten food, meat tidied up etc; .

The personal fave of mine for this one was chosen, but with the feedback of putting the arms closer together for composition purposes - which made a lot more sense. Where it made sense I added in some solid blocks of shadow, without having it be heavy in one spot for emphasizing the #gothic horror

It's really important to pay attention to the fact that Lula beat the fascist candidate not by compromising and trying to meet fascist voters in the middle, but by sticking to his guns, promising prosecutions for election interference, and mobilising his own voters to turn out in greater numbers.

Another update today! 'Blood and Hysteria' by Cat MacKenna was a great story, but challenging to illustrate. Ironically, the prose conjured loads of ideas and visuals - but none suitable for the interior art/dimensions. So I came up with three options two of which i'm showing here:

(The 3rd one is lost to time, mostly because it was a spider that creeped people out, so nuked completely). After reading through the story a few times, I decided to lean on some stronger shape languages and the gothic horror of it all, tension & softer, rounder shapes contrasting with harsh lines.

The well was well-loved! But after review, the #frog was asked to be added in after all, which I think we can agree makes sense once you saw the art itself. I gave three options with a level of action from the frog and number 2 was chosen.

Aaaand that's how we got here! Some small changes in inking phase - mostly around the frog mouth to make the tongue flick more believable. Actually inking this all up was a lot of fun, good shapes and textures for inking.

I actually started with a very rough 'normal' old well based on reference, but moved away from the more realistic symmetry and pushed the shapes to be curvy, wonky and delightfully handmade, leaning into the #fairytale look and feel and just making it waaaay more interesting to look at.

With the second option I also leaned into a less clean and even look, but was actually much more realistic, looking at older medieval and roman coins which often had lost to age what little symmetry they had. I added some ‘wetness’ as well here, hinting at the sliminess of the action.

We first talked about not using the frog directly, so I looked at other key parts of the story that had stuck themselves in my mind’s eye: the well, and the coin. Even at the ‘1st cut’ stage with both options I wanted the look and feel to be rough, uneven and possibly even a lil’ grimy.

If he wasn't white, he would be called a terrorist. This happens over and over again. We learn the stories of abusive men and how they're "so nice and one of the good ones" and then they go and murder and harm women. Am tired of hearing excuses for their actions.

A Home God Sewn of Fur and Bristle by Bryn Hammond was the first story I worked on, and was deeply enjoyable. Because it was the first one I illustrated, it was the one I was the most experimental with style-wise, (tho I did go down a bit of a rabbit hole with the clothing research too).

I’d played around with a simple frame and extra stylized look and detail around the art; with the idea the the stylizing would work better for detail in a small space. There was a lot of feedback on these (as expected for the first where I was throwing a little bit of spaghetti at the wall).
