The Israeli government has displaced a total of 6 million people from their homes. (3 million Iran, 2 million Gaza, 1 million Lebanon). 6 million people. The equivalent of the entire population of Maryland displaced from their homes. By one government.

When reporters would ask me about "how will the public see the effects of DOGE?" my answer was pretty unsatisfying. 1. Performance declines in orgs that deliver direct and measurable services (e.g. IRS, VA, SSA) 2. Emergencies reveal lack of expertise when you need it. The Iran war is a #2 case.

Mike Levin@mikelevin.org

6 months before bombing Iran and closing the Strait of Hormuz, the Trump admin fired the State Dept. oil and gas experts. The people who modeled exactly this scenario. The ones with contacts at Gulf energy ministries. Now nobody knows who to call. You can't make this up.

Pope Leo this week called universal health coverage a "moral imperative." He also said: “Health cannot be a luxury for the few,” it is “an essential condition for social peace.”

Kinda wild that the industry that has given us 27 Marvel movies and 6 Scary Movies got so mad over one small comment about ballet. Looks like the LA Ballet folded after its first decade and was dormant from 1985-2004 too. They just hate Chalamet that much!

Companies never returned their prices to normal after 2-3 months of slowdown in global manufacturing during COVID so this time ought to be great too!

CNN@cnn.com

Iran’s effective shutdown of the Strait of Hormuz has locked up 20% of the world’s oil and restricted access to other goods. And those could raise prices beyond the gas pump for consumers and businesses, creating an inflation double whammy. https://cnn.it/4cLEOtI

Excellent thread.

We're at war. Democracy is crumbling. People are dying. But we still have to care about why research on ultra-processed foods is complete garbage. So here is a thread about why that is. Start with this WSJ piece. (gift link) 🧵 www.wsj.com/health/welln...

This is the true promise of AI: allowing people to live in a fantasy world of their own design. Just psyching yourself up with nonsense images that reflect a completely deranged worldview with no connection to actual events at all. Your life gets worse and worse but the images get better and better

I was in a 2 hour briefing today on the Iran War. All the briefings are closed, because Trump can't defend this war in public. I obviously can't disclose classified info, but you deserve to know how incoherent and incomplete these war plans are. 1/ Here's what I can share:

Almost every Democratic response to this shit right now starts with five sentences about how bad the Ayatollah was and how it was obviously good to destroy him with a missile and thanking our brave men and women in uniform before uttering a single criticism

kenofseattle@kenofseattle.bsky.social

There must be no mercy for the evil Trump Regime. None.

Truly astounding how many really evil people there are in the world, and how in the US we have created a system that elevates the worst of them into positions of tremendous power

It's stunning how ignorant the DOGE bros were who were sent into agencies. Justin Fox cannot even articulate in his own words what his "present understanding of DEI" is: he can't even formulate a coherent sentence about it. I wouldn't hire him for basic tech support. #NEH youtu.be/jomaMvItnew?...

There are obv so many impeachable things to choose from but a nice simple one is “started a war without congressional approval AND has absolutely no idea why he did it”

for those of you who werent adults during iraq, its hard to overstate how much the media loves war porn. they salivate over pentagon spin briefings. they love stories about all the bombs and how supposedly infallible they are. they love the notion of the commander in chief, in the situation room etc

In my younger days I thought pro-war Dems were just spineless capitulators but over time I learned they really just love war. Even now, when Trump is wildly unpopular & this war is wildly unpopular, they just can’t quit loving war.

Sounds like the House Democratic caucus will meet Monday to decide what to do. Good, but there is an issue if Trump effectively gets a whole Constitution-free weekend to do whatever he wants. In the "things to change" file I think we need to make remote Congressional action much more possible.
