Excellent piece by @gkfellows.bsky.social No retaliation thinking is short-term, for 1-shot games, or conceding we have no power to alter repeated ones. Hear, hear to Kent's wise views! "We need to be strategic, we need to think long term, we need to retaliate. Adam Smith would expect no less."

An economist’s defence of trade retaliation by @gkfellows.bsky.social open.substack.com/pub/theline/... This is a really good piece. Almost like it was written by an economist (almost). I would also add that this is not just about trade, but about Trump's efforts to subjugate Canada

this is a wonderful piece of work. in a world of wild demands, exaggerated concerns, and gotchas, Dr. Welsey puts forward some commensense, practical, and workable approaches to make Canada work better. now, will PM Carney, Premier Smith and others support it?

Separatists want us to defend a status quo that doesn't exist, and develop a plan to remain in Canada that is really straightforward: stop whining and start leading. My latest. drjaredwesley.substack.com/p/canada-is-...

The more footage of the Nepal-Tibet glacier disaster I watch, the more obvious it appears that communities cannot fully adjust to this type of events, the harder I think that people are underpricing climate adaptation

SO we tariff global liquor imports EXCEPT where we have a free trade agreement. We tariff auto imports EXCEPT where we have an agreement. etc. etc. The US is just another trading partner without a free trade agreement.

Seems we should be moving as fast as possible to reduce oil/gas consumption in Eastern Canada WHILE establishing delivery not through the US. Open up the EV import market; foster heat pump (non-US) purchases; oil trains; temporary LNG terminals for import.

During the US/Canada trade negotiations the US wanted to remove the French language labels from Canadian products. They also wanted to dictate which other countries we could trade with. Whoa, you don't eff around with our dual language law or tell us who to be friends with.. No thanks! Tabernac!

And our cities want to be just like Gary, Indiana -- without power for a week following a storm. #never51 #forevercanadian

I think we may owe Lutnick a debt of gratitude for the timely reminder to our negotiators of who these guys are, and for saving us from what ultimately would've been a bad deal.

Trump and his underlings are now out spreading their view of the failed deal - just like they did before it failed. Believe nothing they say. Just like all the “Iran defeated” pronouncements. They aren’t honest in public or in private.

Heh Meta. With the US tariff decision you might wish to reconsider the big data centre in Canada. Going to be a lot more expensive to import all that US material to build it.
