Almost got thwarted... Wordle 1,955 6/6 ⬜⬜⬜⬜🟨 ⬜🟩⬜⬜🟩 ⬜🟩⬜⬜🟩 ⬜🟩🟨⬜🟩 🟩🟩⬜⬜🟩 🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩

The BLOTUS was in my neighborhood, at one of the smallest "venues" in the area. On the way to the grocery store, I passed a speeding motorcade of cops with cop trucks, racing toward the venue, but I couldn't tell if it was the BLOTUS or just a decoy.

The rally was attended by hundreds of adoring fans, about 0.1% of the surrounding population of one million. I am reminded of the scene in Spinal Tap where the band manager tries to handwave the diminishing size of the band's venues. Gerald freakking Ford drew a bigger crowd when I was a kid.

I remember when we had to follow attacks with photo-recon aircraft to assess the damage deep in enemy territory, hoping that it wasn't a cloudy day in Targetstan. Now the locals are posting damage pictures on the internet in real-time. I guess the revolution *will* be televised. And crowdfunded.

Two Storm Shadow strikes on Russian military-industrial plants just two days apart. Such strikes have been relatively rare, and now we see two Storm Shadow strikes just two days apart: Oryol’s Proton-Electrotex electronics plant on October 23, and Yelets’ Energiya missile-battery plant on October 25

Whoosh!! There goes a short story over the transom, just a few hours before the deadline. And now I wait...and wait...and wait.

How can a book that doesn't even exist have 5,758 ratings and 956 reviews for a score of 3.53/5.00 over on goodreads? That's some serious enthusiasm!

As much as I miss all of the Calvin and Hobbes licensed merchandise I might have purchased in my lifetime, I believe THIS is what Bill Watterson was preventing from happening to his characters.

Rewatched Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country last night and realized they missed a chance for a callback to "Errand of Mercy" when godlike medieval peasant dudes in robes told Kirk and Kor that one day their empires would be fast friends. Spock should have reminded Kirk about that.

Also, Kirk's all pissy about the death of his son... ...LIKE HE ONLY LEFT ONE BASTARD ON THAT FIVE YEAR MISSION!

I'm never getting tired of this. It's even more fun than the Bart Simpson Blackboard tool, though perhaps I'm showing my age.

Early Voting, two days of mixing concrete, supervising the tree crew, lots of stress, now would be a good time to relax.... Kaleidotrope Submission Deadline is Saturday!!! Ahhhhhhhh!!!! Edit edit edit edit edit...

Today's other job: bush hogging the riding trail in the woods and taking down some dead trees. (We hire that out.)

What happens when two people (whose combined concrete experience is a few unpermitted deck pilings and some fence posts) decide to build steps with non-circular-but-not-really-elliptical radii? See below. Also, it was close enough to elliptical that I estimated the concrete needed to w/in 1 shovel.

Final tally, 19 40# bags of Quikrete, hand-mixed and hand-shoveled. Meg made the form from plywood and masonite she had laminated into the desired curves.

Bought the last of the concrete today before finishing the job. It's odd. 40 pounds of concrete weighs a lot more today than it did yesterday.

Poured the first of two concrete steps today - 16 40# bags of concrete because I don't try to lift 60 or 80 pound bags anymore. Shower and gin, now. In that order.

I'm currently tracking a package shipped from China. The tracking info is very detailed. The last entry states that the plane took off at 2:30 PM LT on 17 October. That's 56 hours ago. Either it crashed or the Chinese have discovered a really impressive jet fuel.

Update: The plane took 49 hours to fly from China to Miami. assuming a lack of magical fuel, there were stops along the way. The package cleared Miami Customs at noon yesterday.

Well, I finally saw The Mandalorian and Grogu, and it helped me articulate something I hate about the post 1980s Star Wars Universe: Character Naming Characters *all* get names like Wok Mandala, but NOBODY uses the name in the movie. Looking at the cast list doesn't help me find the actor.

If there's a character who's an Old Bayou Fisherman *and* no one EVER says his name in the movie, just call him Old Bayou Fisherman in the credits. That way I can see who voiced him without having to google some verdammt fan wiki. Goddamit, the credits should be able to stand alone!!

We did early voting this morning. Lined up just as the elections office opened for business. If only I could tell YouTube I'd made up my mind. Then instead of showing me political ads that I no longer care about, they could show me Medicare ads that I no longer care about.

Finally watched The Bride of Frankenstein tonight, something I realize now that I should have done a long time ago--for many reasons besides how much funnier it makes Young Frankenstein. Script. Effects (Pretorius's little people). Sets. Mattes. Models and model FX. [happy sigh]

Finally saw Godzilla Minus One tonight. Can't wait for Godzilla Minus Zero to hit the local library. Tonight's Audience Dialog Her: Boy, that's gonna cost the insurance companies a bundle! Me: No it won't. It's an act of god. Zilla.

Running out of letters and starting to worry this morning. Wordle 1,945 5/6 🟨⬜⬜🟨⬜ 🟩⬜🟩⬜⬜ 🟩⬜🟩⬜⬜ 🟩⬜🟩⬜⬜ 🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩

Good news: The new keyboard (once I got used to it) let me rewrite the end of this short story. Bad news: I hate the new ending as much as I hate the old one. And it is *not* the keyboard's fault. I had a good ending at one point, but it was a good ending for a novel, not a short story.

Ah, Friday. A new Girl Genius. A new Wilde Life. A new Gunnerkrigg Court. And of course a Wordle to keep me sharp.

We finally got around to watching The Devil Wears Prada 2. I really liked the quick twist at the end. :-) I wanted a post-credit scene where Miranda walks down the street and sees the [SPOILER] in a window, smiles her little smile, and continues on as people look out to see if it was really her.

Are you old enough to remember this: In my lifetime--all the way through three colleges even--stocks were bought and sold in units of 8ths of a dollar. "IBM stock rose today to 39 1/4" The NYSE didn't switch to decimal until decades after the Brits gave up the old pounds/shillings/pence system.

Argh...the new keyboard feels strange. It'll take time to get used to it. But at least the new shift key works.

We need to stop calling it "generative AI". It isn't generating, it's regurgitating. A better name is "Regurgitative AI", or "gurg-AI" for short. Or "hAIrballing".

You know how it rains right after you wash your car? Apparently the same thing happens when you wash your house. We're catching the periphery of Hurricane Isaias here in Upstate S.C.

It's also a chance to test out the new rain countermeasures system. I had a portable sump pump leftover from the storm water problems that we fixed with a retaining wall. Now the pump is on bricks on the top step of the pool. When the water's high enough, it will pump the excess water away.

Having the sump pump is a great improvement over the previous solution, which was getting up at 4AM to see if there was too much water in the pool, then going out in the rain to manually start and stop the main pump. The new pump shuts off automatically at the right level. And I can stay in bed.😴

So, BBC watchers, does "The Marlow Murder Club" get any better? After one episode (including some crap prop work with ammunition), I wouldn't be satisfied with less than All Teens Slapped By Their Mums and the vicar's wife leaving her husband for a job at a bookstore in Midsomer.

This is like a Jurassic Park scene. "Look at the little dinosaur." "Is it dead?" "I think it's just asleep." "Don't wake it up." [Gennaro Mode: Activate]

A Ukrainian FPV drone from DIU’s Artan unit ambushes a Russian soldier, waiting in a position until he comes into view before taking off and striking him.
