It also misses the point that learning is a joyful experience that will reward you for a lifetime and it’s not always about “will I ever use this concept at work?”

Dr. SkySkull@drskyskull.bsky.social

This is ragebait so not directly quoting it, but the question misses the point: studying those topics trains you to THINK, which ia something EVERYONE needs to know regardless if you use those specific skills.

Wanted to share some education resources for the end of #earthscienceweek: Check out the OutSCIder website for units on weathering/erosion/deposition, plate tectonics, rock cycle, water cycle, ocean currents, laws of stratigraphy, & more! www.outscider.org/curriculum/s... As always these are free!

MIL-CLE would be a hell of a thing for baseball. And I’m not talking about CBA/Salary cap stuff. They both play a style of the game that a lot people thought was dead. It’s been all power and walks for the last 10 years. These guys bunt, steal, slap, hustle, & grind. It’d be fascinating to watch.

I think Cleveland goes to the Series. The Brewers are currently the bookies' favorite to win no matter what, and I think that's right.

David Brooks is the kind of guy who whines about a lack of civility, not because he's concerned about violent rhetoric, but because he doesn't want to have experience any self scrutiny for his own beliefs. If you called someone a Nazi, he might feel uncomfortable, which would be the real tragedy.

driftglass@driftglass.bsky.social

"Jon Ossoff, my advice to him is, if you start calling your political opponents Nazis, maybe it's time to shut up. That's just not what we do here in this country." -- David Brooks, this evening. Remember, Brooks still gets very handsomely rewarded by the fossilized media for saying shit like this

For #guardians fans out there, your eyes do not deceive you: the offense really is as bad as you think. While Cleveland has made the 7 of the last 10 years, they’ve won two series, hit 0.195, and average less than a homer a game.

Baseball is best observed in the following order: 1. In person 2. On the radio 3. watching television You listen to guys like Tom Hamilton a Scott Franzke and you’ll learn why. You won’t need to see the video because they’re that good. There’s this list and the there’s everyone else

Richard M. Nixon@dicknixon.bsky.social

In no order I think the first class of current baseball radio broadcasters is Hamilton, Nadel, Hughes, Steiner, Franzke, and Miller. Levering is not always on the radio, but he is getting to be in that company.

Before this kicks up a hornet’s nest: a blue collar job can give you a lot economic and personal fulfillment. But what I really don’t like is someone who has climbed socialeconomic ladder due their elite education telling other people that their kid should be a wage earner.

My dad was a teamster and my mom was a floor secretary at a local hospital. Their expectation for me was college. Neither wanted me to have to do what they did just to make the ends meet. Blue collar life always sounds a lot more glamorous when someone else is living it.

Which is why I find it incredibly irritating when someone who went to the most exclusive school in the country and writes for a prestige magazine wags their finger at parents who want the same of their kids. I’d imagine Lowry and Klein are not raising their children to be bricklayers themselves.

And that’s okay! every parent wants what’s best for their children. But don’t glorify a life you wouldn’t want for your family. All this is to say this is an easy conversation to have in the academic sense, but much more difficult when you have to apply it to your own kids.

I come from a family of firefighters, electricians, and service members. Being in a union is still putting food on my parents table. I have multiple uncles who drppped out of high school to fight in Vietnam. I know that life. But its very easy to say “go learn a trade” when it’s someone else’s kid.

I mean really think about what the implications of what an article like this says for how we would raise and teach our kids. Are you signing your child up for a carpentry class? Or are you getting them a tutor so they could get the best SAT score possible?

The season effectively ended when they got swept at home by the Mets. No amount of team meetings can fix you when you play that poorly against an opponent that bad after some solid deadline acquisitions. Lots of blame to go around for this Guardians season.

It's honestly so crazy to me that we're facing a technological revolution that could displace millions of jobs in the middle of a housing affordability crisis and every day we talk about whether a trans woman is playing sports or if someone has a non-Anglo name.

Despite all the accusations of crimes and cover-ups, the Trump admin has never actually prosecuted or jailed anyone. The supposed stolen 2020 election, Jan 6 deep state, Dr Fauci, etc. All of its is just theater for the base, revving them up. In the end, will undermine faith in gov and institutions.

This is why they’re going after Dr Fauci: he impeded grifters

We’re going to ignore this problem until it becomes a crisis but staffing is going to be biggest issue in education for the next decade

when you breakdown that venezuela players were sitting with buckets on their heads and team usa players were watching videos of us bombing another country to find inspiration for playing a game they all get paid millions of dollars to play, it was kind of obvious who was going to win.

I get this, but here's where I'm at: Trump & Vance are the worst of us. America is bigger than them, and they win if we let them define us. Team USA is the best of us. It's filled with Americans MAGA hates—first-generation + immigrants, LGBTQ+ athletes, people of color—& I'm gonna root for them.

I really really want these athletes to have a great experience, be competitive and perhaps win a gold medal, but, honestly, the thought of hearing "USA!USA!USA!" during their games kinda makes me cringe. If we were any other country the IOC would ask us to march under the olympic flag.

Let me reiterate: THEY DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH GUYS TO PERSECUTE LARGE NUMBERS OF DISSENTERS. What they are doing, instead, is using fear and paranoia as a force multiplier: they don’t have to persecute us if we keep ourselves home because someone told us we can’t walk in public without being terrified.
