LIRR's dispatching is too funny... Train comes in from the northernmost local track, so let's switch it all the way over to track 5, just to have to switch it all the way back to the northernmost local track to stop at Woodside. 5 minutes to go 1.8 miles into Jamaica 🤡

Until there are so many stops the bus is barely faster than walking

Christof Spieler@christofspieler.bsky.social

My favorite graphics in "Transportation and the Shape of Cities" #6: A typical transit route gets its ridership from lots of shorter trips that overlap each other, not from end-to-end trips. The more destinations along the way, the more of those trips it can serve, and the higher ridership is.

One would think they're hold/dispatch lights for dispatchers to give people enough time to filter off the ferry. But they're not being used like that. Arrived 12 mins ago, the lights are still on, and all the buses are rolling out (except mine which is completely MIA...!) bsky.app/profile/ryan...

I thought these were for dispatch?

This isn't the first time the MTA's EAGLE teams have been caught coloring outside the lines... www.nydailynews.com/2026/10/15/m... How many years were EAGLE teams demanding riders show their private bank transactions even tho MTA said they shouldn't? Really undermines credibility on fare evasion

nydailynews.comMTA suspends fare checkers over Brooklyn fare evasion clash, launches investigationThe MTA has removed from duty the fare checkers involved in a violent incident in Brooklyn pending an investigation into how an effort to check on potential fare evasion turned into a physical clash, ...

For an agency so worked up abt fare evasion, it's amazing how many of its employees responsible for fare collection are so horrifically bad at their jobs... From those who set fare policy, to mismanagers of $1+b fare tech upgrades, lazy conductors, thuggish inspectors Really none of it works well!

And this is despite MTA completely stacking the deck for themselves The people who write the regulations, enforce the regulations, and adjudicate offenses all collect their paychecks from the same agency. Doesn't seem that fare & impartial MTA should not be allowed to keep revenue from summonses.

Love the photo. 6:44 arrival canceled so a bunch of local passengers get to miss their connection to the last train of the night to Greenport...

This wasn't even an SBS bus, yet these @MTA.info emoyees quite clearly assaulted this passenger attempting to alight the vehicle. How many millions of bus trips is the MTA going to have to convert to make up for the settlement payout they'll have to pay this guy? gothamist.com/news/brookly...

gothamist.comBrooklyn school dean says MTA officers assaulted him over a $3 bus fare he says he paidKyle Taylor, a dean at Mott Bridges Academy, says he made a legal bus transfer.

MTA's solutions for "fare evasion" ✅️ billion dollar fare payment systems that don't work ✅️ assaulting riders for not proving they paid on bus lines that are not PoP ✅️ surcharges you cant dispute ✅️ tickets you can't refund/reuse if MTA cancels svc But MTA execs think we just need to get used to it!

PATH seems to have adjusted the weekend schedules so trains between Exchange Place and WTC run 1 and 19 minutes apart, instead of spacing them out. LOL.

Very serious if this proves out to be true. Seems very close to grossly negligent behavior from the conductor... Sounds like the conductor knew there was a risk of people being dragged, knew they were supposed to monitor the train during departure, but did not over fears of being struck.

MTA's font-line employees go through a lot, and it's horrible that some are victims of crime. But if you're not comfortable doing your job without skipping critical safety checks, then you need to find a different line of work... Clearly still major safety culture issues at MTA.

Because MTA fare policy is set by people who think all of their riders are theiving fare evaders, and that the customer is always wrong and that their employees always do their jobs correctly.

JackTatt 🇨🇦@jacktatttran.bsky.social

Why can’t they just do it based on tapping within a certain timeframe (like two hours) as in Toronto? And if outside the timeframe, that you tapped on last within the timeframe?

MTA has been careening from financial crisis to financial crisis the last 20 years because people running errands are going out and back on the same bus route without paying a second fare.

I see this all the time in LIC, especially around the terminals. The OMNY website doesn't offer a way for riders to check this. What a joke of a public service.

Contactless payments now account for only about 18% of trips on WMATA Metro Rail. The wide majority of riders are still using Smart Trip cards, about a third on mobile and two-thirds physical cards.

I imagine this is fairly heavily swayed by Federal workers who get their transit subsidies direct loaded to Smart Trip, but don't sleep on the utility of a decent farecard that is accepted across most of a region!

I've become convinced that NYC is an appalling failure of governance. It's a city drowning in entirely solvable problems, flapping its hands uselessly as it sinks underneath.

Over the last 2 weeks, the flight I'm due to take back to the US tomorrow has been canceled 3 times, diverted to Syracuse, and tonight pushed back 8 hours 31 minutes late (after taking another 2.5 hour delay on the ground after the inbound plane arrived late)

Very tragic and sad news... www.amny.com/news/brookly... Buy I disagree with the article characterizing this as a "freak accident". We spend billions every year to keep conductors on Subway trains to be an extra set of eyes to prevent tragedies exactly like this. What happened??

amny.comBrooklyn commuter dragged to his death by A train after his bag gets caught in doors | amNewYorkPolice are investigating a horrific death at a Brooklyn subway station on Monday evening in which a man was fatally dragged by a moving train in an apparent

This is a lame excuse, we spent three-quarters of a billion dollars on OMNY OMNY should 100% have the capability to program temporary and extra transfers to get people around disruptions Not just shuttle buses, but also additional out of system subway-to-subway xfers so you can walk to nearby line

Sunny Ng@sunny.ng

MTA has strict transfer rules that would be a problem if replacement shuttles also charge fares. You’re only allowed one transfer per trip (subway to bus, bus to subway, bus to bus), some exceptions apply.

Not just for planned disruptions, but unplanned as well. If line is delayed, we should be able walk an avenue over and tap in (w/o additional fare and without eating their transfer) to keep moving. But MTA doesn't care about getting us to destinations in timely manner. Especially on weekends!

They don't. MTA's Kaufman said this during the meeting. Basically b/c ridership and revenue are growing, the new policies must be working. Oblivious to these other obvious market factors What MTA fails to realize is that they could trade weak 5% ridership growth for 15+% if they stopped being dumb!

John@dillworth.org

They don't care as long as they are collecting revenue and ridership remains high. Judging but the lack of parking at the major stations gas prices and congestion pricing is forcing people back on the trains despite fare policies.

But our expectations are so low. MTA puts out press releases for every little incremental "post-pandemic ridership record" and people print and retweet them. Nevermind the billions more we have put into the system in the meantime. Why is annual LIRR ridership not north of 100 million by now?

Instead of addressing the real root cause of these issues (conductors not doing their jobs and collecting tickets), MTA and railroad officials decided it was easier to punish fare-paying riders with higher fares and less flexible tickets, leading to a steep drop in satisfaction as a result.

MTA execs uninterested in learning anything from the survey results and will instead just ride this out, waving away steep drops in satisfaction as a "temporary dip" When can we get MTA execs that actually care about their jobs and act on feedback from riders? www.thelirrtoday.com/2026/09/sati...

The MTA has tried to whitewash these changes with conjured up claims of pervasive fare evasion on the railroads. But actual data doesn't backup these claims. MTA data shows that only 0.068% of riders were issued & didn't pay an invoice in 2025, only 0.003% got summons Meaning 99.29% pay their fare

And even with the new surcharges and new fare policies, conductors STILL aren't collecting all fares. LIRR's fare collection rate is still only about 98.1%, only a 1.3% improvement over last year. So what is really the problem? Mobile ticket activations, or conductors just not doing their jobs?

Satisfaction among those who reported they were hit with an $8 surcharge plummeted from 80% to 56%. But even among riders who weren't hit with surcharge, satisfaction scores dropped 4 points. Levina tried to paint this as "quite close", but it was the largest single-period drop (except for ESA)

MTA tried to paint the riders who were unsatisfied as liars and cheaters who were annoyed they couldn't evade the fare anymore. But they are ignoring there are plenty of other reasons (& data to back up) why satisfaction dropped quite sharply among honest, fare-paying passengers.

The fact that the MTA uses 50% of their available space to display useless PSAs (when was the last time you saw someone bring a dog on the bus? Or put their dog in a carrier in the subway, for that matter…) is a perfect demonstration of their failure to understand their job.

Does the MTA even place ads on these bus screens? All I've seen is their propaganda PSA's...

Dimitris K@dimitrovsky.bsky.social

you've got it confused the ones on the right are AD PANELS transit info is supplementary

The more I think about it, the more I believe the MTA's carpet-bombing of in-system PSA's is very problematic. MTA thinks the answer to anti-social behavior is to just run another ad campaign. No! Have clear rules and enforce them. It's a huge cost and obviously ineffective at solving problem.

Shouldn't need to waste half screen w/ PSA about pets in carriers because the driver shouldn't let loose pets on in the first place If banks are getting robbed, they don't put up posters saying "Curtosey Counts. Don't rob us!"—they step up security, get police to increase patrols & enforcement, etc
