RIP to Esther Rantzen. Her support for the campaign to provide a safe, dignified death for the terminally ill moved the needle measurably. It is unfortunate that change did not come in time for her to see it.

Dignity in Dying@dignityindying.org.uk

We are deeply saddened by the death of Dame Esther Rantzen. A true force of nature, Dame Esther fought throughout her life for people’s rights, and latterly for dying people who needed more choice and compassion. Our heartfelt condolences are with her family and loved ones.

Just finished a playthrough of BIOSHOCK (Remastered)... what an extraordinary game. I first played it around ~2010, after a multi-year period where I didn't play anything. This and Fallout 3 were the games that rekindled my interest.

Bioshock's unique world design and visual style still hold water in 2026 - it's a beautiful game, now running at a smooth 4K 120fps. It's a rare marriage of narrative, art and gameplay that all feed into each other to create another world.

Another movie I've had for ~20 years and never got around to watching - even though it has Kara Hui in it 😱 It's actually a lot of fun, in that uniquely Hong Kong style where idiotic gags and kick-ass action blur into each other without much regard for whether it makes sense.

#NowWatching THEY CAME TO ROB HONG KONG (1988, Clarence Fok) A Cinema City production written by "Dean Shek Creative Unit" (only credit!), in which Roy Cheung puts together a squad of unlikely types to... well, the title don't lie.

Sammo Hung's Blade of Fury is my favorite kind of historical drama about national mythmaking: the kind where every position on the ideological spectrum is represented by a different martial arts fighter and there’s a quintuple decap in the first fifteen minutes

Love to see two old Shaw Brothers stars, Chin Siu Ho and Norman Tsui go at it in Taoist Priest. ESPECIALLY when you get a dope Demon of the Lute reference thrown in for good measure! Also...third hand technique! lol

A WRITER’S ODYSSEY 2: the idea of alternate realities colliding that was played with in the first film is in full bloom here and while it eventually piles-up an enough ideas for two sequels I welcome its go-for-broke audacity. The spectacle and swordplay remain fun and plentiful.

Now watching: A WRITER’S ODYSSEY 2.

#JustWatched THE JADE TIGER (1977, Chu Yuan) One of the more accomplished Chu Yuan/Ku Long/Ti Lung collaborations, with a suitably labyrinthine plot and gorgeous visuals, with an all-star cast and quite a dark story.

#NowWatching CLANS OF INTRIGUE (1977, Chu Yuan) I love the fever dream logic (and aesthetics) of this film. The best of Chu Yuan's Gu Long adaptations - and we finally get to see it uncut thanks to @arrowvideo.bsky.social. Waited a long time for this!

#JustWatched CITY ON FIRE (1987, Ringo Lam) One of the crown jewels of 1980's Hong Kong Cinema. Ringo Lam nails that fatalistic, cynical noir vibe and coaxes a magnificent performance out of Chow Yun-Fat. Great to see this finally get a quality remaster! boxd.it/aLJZUd

GPT-Subtrans is now LLM-Subtrans! github.com/machinewrapp... An overdue name change, since it has supported providers other than OpenAI/GPT for a very long time, but with the recent addition of OpenRouter support it seemed like the right time to make the change.

GPT-Subtrans v1.0.5 is available (only Windows so far). This version adds support for reasoning models from OpenAI, DeepSeek and Gemini. github.com/machinewrapp... DeepSeek is the only model that returns the reasoning step - fun to see it considering how to translate tricky lines!

OpenRouter is an aggregator that provides access to a wide variety of LLMs with a single API key. This includes a number of quite capable models that are free to use, such as google/gemini-2.0-flash-exp:free. It is now the default provider for LLM-Subtrans.

LLM-Subtrans uses LLMs to translate subtitles, producing vastly superior results to older machine-translation methods. It cannot replace a professional translator who has actually watched the film, but it is usually "good enough" and can help make obscure films more accessible.

#NowWatching THE LADY HERMIT (1971, Ho Meng-Hua) Shaw Brothers' attempt to set up Shih Szu as Cheng Pei-Pei's successor in the wuxia genre. I want Cheng Pei-Pei's face... why can't I have Cheng Pei-Pei's face? 😠

This article claims that people can't move to productive cities because of housing costs. But of course the causal chain could well be the opposite (see Pettis) and work as follows: 1. Productive cities concentrate economic rents 2. These rents flow to capital owners, not workers
