Retreating soldiers aren’t hors de combat, you don’t have to be actively shooting at your enemy to be a legitimate target. If you did then every IDF soldier who was the subject of a 🔻 video while they were chilling was the victim of a war crime.

oh jeez@nimakokaaz.bsky.social

i was 15 when bush sr put colin powell and general schwartzkopf on the podium to show smartbomb clips like it was the Consumer Electronics Show (e3 didn't exist yet) i will never forget the firebombing of a retreating army, which is a huuuuge Geneva Convention crime. nobody was held responsible.

DHS’s social media is almost certainly run by a Zoomer groyper. Most of their tweets contain not only the obvious racism but little nods to in-jokes among the global far right.

Julian Sanchez@normative.bsky.social

Ok, not only was the intent what I thought, but “doctors and engineers” is in fact a well-known (mostly European) sarcastic trope used to demean immigrants. The “joke” being that of course we all know, ha ha, these inferior peoples would never occupy such roles. en.wiktionary.org/wiki/doctors...

BANK OF AMERICA VICE PRESIDENT KILLED IN TIMES SQUARE STABBING - BBG

This is a sort of glonzo-adjacent situation. Do helmets really provide much protection for adult cyclists, whose primary danger is cars? No. Do normies believe they matter? If you get hit will people ask if you were wearing one? Yes. We’re not ready to fight this battle yet culturally.

rare that you see what is clearly an escaped Bluesky reply in the wild tbh. i hope it's happy

“No intervention, business as usual” will absolutely be the response to the next economic crisis, and it’s looking increasingly like it will be the response to the next public health crisis.

Under my dictatorship if you have a Tolkien name for your company or product then your senior management and board will all get life sentences if your product is anything more evil than sustainable toys for bunnies.

Small question: are Latin Americans dumb too? Russians? Japanese?

Nancy Armour@nrarmour.bsky.social

Swiss players just flipping back and forth between French, German and English. All foreign reporters able to ask questions in English. We’re the dumbest country. (And I say this as someone who can’t do more than the basics in a second language. Even then it’s an effort.)

The reason Americans don’t learn other languages is because no matter where you are you can pick at least one direction from where you stand and go a thousand miles and it’s all overwhelmingly in your language. That’s it. And I say this as someone who speaks reasonable Spanish and Portuguese.

Imagine believing in the silent socialist majority in the year of our lord 2026.

Sam@samd.bsky.social

the idea that there is a latent far-left socialist majority that refuses to vote is legitimately just the political equivalent of a cargo cult

I write in cursive and what are you talking about man? My Boomer parents even use Venmo.

Governor Josh Shapiro@governor.pa.gov

It may seem strange, but cursive handwriting is a fundamental skill that all of our kids should learn. They may not get why now, but that’s how they’ll sign their very first check — or maybe even someday, a bill that gets to the Governor’s desk (trust me, you’ll want good penmanship for that).

They also announced a magsafe bluetooth physical keyboard and I understand the desire for that a billion times more than I understand wanting a ‘Blackberry for (my) phone.’ I may grab that one.

All the minimalist phones suck, and they can’t not suck because we’ve built a society where everyone is presumed to have a functional smartphone at all times. So even if you get one it really can only be a second toy device and you still have to have a main real device at times.

It’s a numbers game and we should make it an explicit numbers game: a lottery with a floor for entry. None of the Lake Wobegon overachiever arms race, just objective criteria and if you meet them you get a number, good luck.

Lionsgate is holding a screening of ‘The Long Walk’ where you have to walk 3 MPH or faster on a treadmill for the entire movie • Theater has been retrofitted with treadmills • If you stop, you’ll be escorted out of the theater and can’t watch the rest of the film

I think we’ll have a cable-cutting movement but for phone numbers within 15 years.

Matthew Green@matthewdgreen.bsky.social

Is there any upside to answering the phone anymore? The scam rate used to hover around 75% and now it seems to be consistently close to 100%.

Smelting pig microchips in our backyard fabs

This works out to 1 out of every 26 people between the ages of 25 and 54 in this country, or one out of every 22 in that age range currently in the labor force. Just laughable stuff. *LUTNICK: US WILL TRAIN 5 MILLION US WORKERS FOR CHIP FACTORIES

Every family and child deserves to feel safe and secure in the place they call home. Every resident of Illinois should know their rights. I intend to protect those rights and ensure our state laws are followed.

We want a highly pro-social society, but critically it can involve no increase in our taxes, restrictions on our behavior, feelings of duty to others, or action on our part. You know, a fantasy.

I agree. We should only have speed cameras and red light cameras and bus lanes and such from River North to Lincoln Park to ensure these burdens are primarily on the well-to-do. Safety is a luxury good for luxury people. /s
