At Monte Verità, researchers from geology, biology & beyond explored how tectonics and geomorphology shape biodiversity. Highlighting a need for cross-disciplinary language to understand how the geo- & biospheres interact across space and time, the workshop built upon the goals of the TERRA Cluster.
We are looking for an Independent Junior Research Group Leader (m/f/d) for the cluster of excellence TERRA. If you are interested in Modeling of Global Biogeochemical Cycles you should join us and become part of the TERRA family.

📣We are looking for a junior research group leader on 'Modeling Global Biogeochemical Cycles' as part of TERRA @unituebingen.bsky.social ! Funding is available for the group lead, a PhD position, expenses and more! For more details scan the QR code or go to www.earthworks-jobs.com/jobpost/tubi... 🌍.
Rice feeds over half the world, but paddy fields are increasingly contaminated with toxins. #TERRAnaut Andreas Kappler & an international team propose strategies to cut arsenic, cadmium & mercury uptake into grains, without costly soil replacement.

The three winners of the #TERRA Poster Award at Pan-GLASS 2026 🏆
Nikolaus Papanikolaou (MPI Jena)
María Perez (Geophysical Institute of Peru)
Devosmita Sen (IISER Pune)
Congrats to all three! Great days of exchange on land-atmosphere interactions in Stuttgart.

Pan-GLASS 2026 has ended the way it started: by looking forward.
Congratulations to all six ECR competition winners.
The GLASS community needs YOU. Scan the QR to stay in the loop. Thanks to all who turned the 1st Pan-GLASS conference into something truly special: great science, better company. 🌍
#PanGLASS2026! Day 2 was all about building connections that will shape the future of land-atmosphere science with 2nd Poster session and interactive Townhalls, introducing GLASS Projects. 🤝

Day 1 of Pan-GLASS 2026 in Stuttgart! 🌍 Opening plenary, then four sessions packed with great science: Machine Learning for L-A interactions, soil-plant-atmosphere processes, turbulence & surface fluxes, and surface heterogeneity. Posters + icebreaker rounded off a great day. #PanGLASS2026#GEWEX
A species can be numerous and still be losing genetic diversity. #TERRAnaut Debbie Leigh of @sgn.one and her team have developed a new method to make this invisible loss visible — and a framework of what we can do about it.

🎙️ TERRAnauts Kira Rehfeld & Andreas Schweiger join „Exzellent erklärt" to talk soils, plants and climate — and the one-of-a-kind field experiment „Diversitorium".

Members of #TERRA 🌍, including our speaker @michaeladippold.bsky.social and our #FutureLab attended a Syntropic Agroforestry workshop at the Weidenhof Living Lab in Deggenhausertal.
Interested in #syntropic#agroforestry?
The number of model systems in Germany is rare & co-application of #biochar is unique:
The #TERRA#FutureLab supported initative, the #SynWei system, is just now successfully established: join interesting discussions & a field tour on 16.06 vrom 10 a.m. on
📰 #TERRA made the news!
The Schwäbische Tagblatt covered our TERRA Cluster of Excellence kick-off. Great to see public interest around what we're building: 7 years of research into terrestrial geo-biosphere interactions, starting now. 🌍

Had amazingly great discussions. But, have to be very honest: I had the much easier job than @khatababdalla.bsky.social, who faced all the deep questions on how to integrate #resistance#resilience frameworks into integrative Geo-Bio Sciences.
Was great representing #TERRA first time at #EGU2026 😊
TERRA was at #EGU26, organized by @egu.eu, in Vienna, Austria. While several of our members were present, our speaker @michaeladippold.bsky.social and postdoc @khatababdalla.bsky.social presented some aspects of #TERRA and our approach to the wider scientific audience.

Day 3 of #EGU, and so many exciting conversations, even over lunch in the park 🤩. It is great to be discussing topics like Miocene cooling, bugs in climate models, soil pCO2, or biochar as carbon removal option. Where else would this be possible in one day? @terra-cluster.org@egu.eu
A lovely little detail at the #TERRA kick-off: tabletop rock gardens for meditative, zen-inspired coffee breaks 🪨🌱
Thanks a lot for the great opening event @terra-cluster.org
Our #TERRA 🌎 Kick-Off is today and we're so giddy. The past couple of days and weeks have been a bit stressful but now we're finally there!
We'll keep you posted! It's going to be #Excellent 💚
What fun to attend: The #TERRA FutureLab distributed its first biochar product from the #Kastanienhof. Bags were faster gone than the Visitors registered @unituebingen.bsky.social: what a success. This clearly shows that interest & demand for nature based solutions is out there: let's get started 💪
We were especially happy to welcome our two @dfg.de contact persons Dr. Muhadj Adnan and Dr. Meike Teschke here in @unituebingen.bsky.social. What a fruitful exchange 😀.
Very good that none of these pictures captures how nervous (but at the same time happy) I was. After all these years of preparation, shaking with tension waiting for the evaluation outcome, we are finally there: What a great day 🎉

Something excellent is launching tomorrow. 🌍
#TERRA — our Cluster of Excellence at @unituebingen.bsky.social — officially kicks off its first chapter.
Can you guess what we plan to do with these soil samples at our Kick-Off?
Geoscientists, biologists, and environmental researchers and many more scientists from Tübingen, Hohenheim & Senckenberg are going to work together on one shared goal.
Stay tuned.
❄️The Arctic is thawing — and the plants moving in are making it worse.
A research team within #TERRA🌍 studied the #Stordalen mire in #Sweden across a full growing season. As permafrost melts, grasses replace shrubs. They absorb CO₂ in summer — but drive far more methane by late season.
Net result: emissions up to 9× higher.
Methane is a much more potent greenhouse gas than CO₂.
"Global climate models must consider not just the permafrost itself, but the plant activity on it as well,” says Marie Mollenkopf, a PhD student who led the study.
