drive.google.com! Donald Kepple ringtones - Google Drive

Donald is a New Zealand composer based in China, who worked at TCL doing ringtones for Alcatel phones! I got in touch with him after years of searching, and he sent some other tones he found too: drive.google.com/drive/u/0/fo... He's pretty happy about the interest in ringtones.

As it turns out, many LG ringtones over the years were created by the Korean content company Neocyon. We don't know many specific names involved just yet, but this is an exciting breakthrough - getting closer to solving who composed all those VGM-y tones that get thousands of likes. :)

For some background: Neocyon was founded as an LG subsidary in 2000, but spun off in 2005, but continued working with them after that. Their main focus is games (which they also developed for LG too), but also provided ringtones and wallpapers for LG.

Notably, they composed some tracks for Ragnarok Online and arranged all music for the 2013 remake of Double Dragon II: Wander of the Dragons. You can hear similarities to LG ringtones in these works. The "[game] vibes" comments make sense! www.youtube.com/watch?v=LKZu...

We finally have an answer to "Does Nokia's internal holy grail of HQ + unused ringtones still exist?". Unfortunately, Microsoft deleted them when transferring Nokia data to HMD Global upon the sale in 2016. I am truly disheartened by the devaluation of historical content.

That being said, we've done our best with external preservation efforts. The Ultimate Nokia Ringtone Collection hasn't been updated for years, but is highly comprehensive! It even has stuff that was never officially released, even if only a fraction. www.deviantart.com/windowsaesth...

Wow, these tweets have done numbers! To clarify, Nokia ringtones themselves are not lost media - people have been ripping them for 20+ years. It's the lossless masters and unused tones that are mostly lost. Also the sheet listing all the composer credits.

Ringtone / Tech Product Bangers reposted

There were hundreds of ringtones and related audio that never got used on any phones or released online. While several composers have helped unearth their old work, many tracks are likely to be permanently lost. A middle finger to preservation.

Not quite YMO, but speaking of Matsutake, his music company Music Airport created ringtones for companies like Sony Ericsson, Yamaha, Sanyo, Nokia, etc. It is not clear if he personally composed some himself or if they were all outsourced. An example: www.youtube.com/watch?v=DP8x... (5/5)

YMO is one of my favorite electronic bands, so I hope this was insightful! They have influenced lots of musicians especially game composers - and certainly many ringtone/tech product composers as well.

In 2009, YMO (as HASYMO) created the song "Good Morning, Good Night" for the NTT DoCoMo NEC N-04A commercial. The phone itself has 14 original ringtones by HASYMO. Sadly the ringtones have not been archived and shared online yet, but the song is available: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gzuw... (3/5)
