I'm a Father | Spouse | Son | Brother | Nephew | Born & Raised Alaskan | Librarian and more from Juneau, Alaska. I’m socially progressive and fiscally conservative, but have become a one-issue voter of late, especially now that I have a teenage daughter.

By day, they seamlessly weave into the dry, golden stalks, quiet observers resting in autum’s warmth. Under the near full moon they shift into ethereal phantoms, with wide piercing eyes, caught like spirits staring back from the void.🌿🦌✨

Late October sunlight brings out the colors. Grass glows a brittle gold against the snowline, progressing down with each cooling day. The bridge wet from the heavy storms this week, steamed in the warm sun. I stood with the dog for a long time, watching the water meander by, autumn’s last exhale.

Dodged two falling trees on my morning walk today thanks to a solid headlamp and fast reflexes. Pro tip: listening to Stephen King's Doctor Sleep while the forest literally collapses around you is a wildly effective way to enhance the horror experience. 🌲🌪️🎧

Nature’s lighting director deserves a raise today. Nothing beats that low autumn sun turning tree moss and some fresh rain into dramatic, moody stage decor. 🌲✨  #Juneau #Alaska #Hiking

Spotted impressive beaver activity on the Herbert Glacier Trail today while on a 10 mile hike! 🦫 Incredible to see the sturdy lodge and massive, chewed stumps left behind. Seeing this active habitat puts things in perspective near the planned Amalga Mine. #Juneau #Alaska

Incredible sunrise walk along the Mendenhall River this morning! 🌅 The sky transitioning from deep purples to fiery oranges over the ridgeline was breathtaking. The crisp air and mist through the evergreens made the early wake-up worth it. #Juneau #Alaska #Sunrise #MendenhallRiver #SkyWatch

I love a brisk autumn morning walk with clear skies in Juneau. Mist curling off the water, frost on the marsh, and golden dawn over the airport. Perfect start to the day. 🍂✨

If you haven't read/listened to James by Percival Everett, do it now. It is a profound, life-altering masterpiece of a book. Reimagining Huck Finn from Jim’s perspective, it is sharp, brilliant, and devastating - one of my top 10 books of all time. 📖✨🛶 #BookSky #PercivalEverett

I feel like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde when I go from reading news originating in the US vs the Middle East, or even Europe. This President is spewing layers of lies so deep he can’t keep his story straight - unchallenged, unhinged lies.

Juneau has nearly broken the all-time record snowfall. The kids celebrated making the 3rd highest snowfall ever by sledding down out 9’+ pile of snow in our front yard. There is a fence and then a ditch, it you can’t even tell.

The word clutch is now used to describe something that is amazing, perfectly timed, or just “cool”. Yet most kids these days will never drive a car using a clutch. They’ll never appreciate the skill required to pull away from a stop on a steep hill, or pop the clutch to start w/a dead battery.

In pre-marked trading today (Sunday) oil futures are up over 25% to nearly $115/barrel. South Korea had to halt trading because of selloff trigger alarms. Hang on, Monday is going to be rough for a lot of US investors.

In January our regular bill pay for my uncle’s care was returned undeliverable. That hasn’t happened in 5 years of the same monthly payment. Why didn’t Biden replace Dejoy with someone competent? Instead we are left with another Trump appointee who wants to destroy mail-in-voting.

A fact I can’t shake this week: Neither of the World Wars held their namesake that until they were years into the conflict. The people living inside those first few years ID’d those conflicts as less than a WW. I feel like I can identify with that perspective in a way I never could before.

My conservative friends think I drive an EV because I’m a “Greenie” or “Biden lover”. These are the times I remind them that the hydropower used to energize my car does not cost any US military lives.

Who else remembers when the US invaded Iraq in August of 1990? I also remember that the stock market fell 18% in 8 weeks, and oil prices doubled. We are still in the very early days of economic uncertainty.

My oldest son will be 18 next year. He is terrified about this war and the people making the decisions that could change his life. Tonight we talked through all his options. He learned about conscientious objectors like Muhammad Ali, as well as many other choices he can make. Knowledge is power.

I worry that Trump killing the leaders of Venezuela and Iran will embolden Putin to murder Zelensky. I truly hope Ukraine can survive the battles it may face now that Europe and the US are so focused on the Middle East.

When I was young and idealistic, I used to believe we were the good guys. Patriotism lifted our grandfathers and fathers when they returned from war. Those medals meant something. Now I’m not sure whether our nation has fallen, or my eyes have been opened. Either way - we are not the good guys.

“It is the same in all wars; the soldiers do the fighting, the journalists do the shouting, and no true patriot ever gets near a front-line trench, except on the briefest of propaganda tours.” ~George Orwell

The race is on to see who will respond first. Will it be Murkowsk’s concern about taking military action against Iran without congressional approval, or Sullivan’s support of the maximum pressure policy? Begich will be silent, and no one we’ll take action, but a race is a race, right?

Tax lesson for today: In 2024 our family business chose to spend as little money as possible with Amazon. I reduced money going to Bezos from $9,200 in 2024 to $481 in 2025. My goal this year is to get that to zero. #yourdollaryourvote #downwithamazon #nomorebillionaires

I love when science blows my mind. I’ve never been an ethanol fan, but this statistic really drives the argument to stop subsidizing corn farmers to create a fuel additive that reduces our fuel efficiency and harms many older and small engines.

Kevin J. Kircher@kevinjkircher.com

Next time someone asks you about energy and land use, maybe remind them that the ~35 million acres that currently grow corn for ethanol in the US could produce ~15 PWh per year of electricity from solar photovoltaics. That's ~3.5 times more than *total annual generation from all US power plants*.

Music has power.

brass solidarity band performing “stand by me” in the streets of whittier next to alex pretti’s memorial. the crowd started chanting “the people united will never be defeated” so they incorporated it into the song. i love minneapolis

What an amazing night for the Aurora in Juneau, Alaska. It was some of the best I’ve seen here and my teenage daughter got to see a good show for the first time. She said it was like dancing with spirits, soaring and frolicking across vast distances of sky.

Aurora in Juneau, Alaska, 1/20/26. At 5:15 a.m. I woke up my 13-year-old. We went outside and stood, awestruck as the shapes danced and pulsated above our heads. We marveled at how small and connected we both felt to universe. It was a beautiful way to start the day.

This could be one of the best nights for Aurora since the massive solar storm of 1989. This solar flare has the potential to impact power grids, wireless service, GPS, and other electrical devices.

If SNAP is not funded Saturday, the US will likely see an uptick in shoplifting and misdemeanor theft. When food stamps go away, parents will do whatever they can to feed their families. Young people will find and take food. Babies and children will suffer far more than the adults.
