I physically clipped newspaper and magazine articles and recorded network news programs on video tape. Not odd at the time but, in retrospect, an odd moment in media time.

So today OpenAI released GPT-6 Astra, which it called "the world’s most intelligent and aligned model." Also in the system card, from third-party evaluator Apollo Research:

Charlie Warzel@cwarzel.bsky.social

Wrote a big essay w/ @matteowong.bsky.social trying to put a finger on this moment in AI right now. The AI agent hacks, lack of control, the weirdening & slopping of culture. The feeling that the industry is speeding toward something it can’t even decide is good and lecturing that it is inevitable.

“The sources said the meeting focused on new plans for devastating strikes on strategic targets in Iran” And the old plans were what? Less than devastating strikes on targets of little importance?

Sky Marchini@sky.skymarchini.net

christ, if RAVID is reporting this shit: "President Trump held a Situation Room meeting Tuesday to discuss a massive offensive in Iran that will be wider in scope than the current strikes around the Strait of Hormuz, three sources with knowledge said." www.axios.com/2026/07/15/t...

I thought I understood the depths of depravity surrounding Tate. I was wrong.

The New Yorker@newyorker.com

Andrew Tate referred to his webcam workers as slaves, branded them with tattoos, and subjected them to harrowing abuse. In this week’s issue, Heidi Blake interviews more than a dozen alleged victims—and Tate himself. www.newyorker.com/magazine/202...

Personally, I’m not at all astonished that Trump is this bad at presidenting.

Ryan C. Smith@rcsmitheco.bsky.social

The phrase, "astonishing humiliation" was the first to spring to mind. This is easily the worst foreign policy disaster in US history since the British burned the White House in the War of 1812 and it was totally self-inflicted.

How useful are all those vibe-coded apps at the end of the day? “The marked increase in mobile app releases over the past year has not been accompanied by any increase in downloads — most of the new apps fail to capture even a modest audience.” www.ft.com/content/8e9a...

It’s been a dozen years and I remember when I was a lonely voice speaking against what was a really stupid technology. Cambridge had 2 gun fire incidents the year before ShotSpotter was installed and had no need for gunfire detection technology, even assuming it worked.

Cambridge DSA 🌹@cambridgedsa.bsky.social

This was a triumph of organizing. Over two City Council hearings, almost 60 people spoke up against ShotSpotter. Their testimonies capped off years of tireless advocacy from a broad coalition including The Black Response, Digital Fourth, SURJ Boston, Cambridge for Palestine, and Cambridge DSA.

ShotSpotter was a scam from the start. It failed in the marketplace - police departments wouldn’t spend their money on it - so they lobbied Congress to create a grant program to fund its purchase. Then they trained police departments on how to write a successful grant.

That it took so much organizing energy to remove it is an object lesson in how entrenched surveillance technology becomes, even when it’s stupid and useless. Kudos to @cambridgedsa.bsky.social , The Black Response, Digital Fourth, SURJ Boston, Cambridge for Palestine for their success.

My hot take is that All the President’s Men is really the story of a disgruntled job seeker leaking secrets to exact revenge on the man who passed him over for FBI Director.

Nate Raymond@nateraymond.bsky.social

Stumbled into the beginnings of a journalism movie marathon, after HBO Max warned me "All the President's Men" was leaving and I decided it was a movie I could watch with kids in the room (which didn't actually work, finished at night).

And here I repent I was going to read about a Man From Uncle reboot.

We’re back to arguing about fluoride.

ProPublica@propublica.org

Under RFK Jr., the federal government is taking aim at not just fluoridated water but also fluoride supplements. The FDA announced efforts to restrict the sale of certain fluoride products to children and has issued a warning about their risks to health care professionals. (Published January)

Also, clearly, Patel has neither read nor seen The Caine Mutiny.

Patel cared more about a missing bottle of bourbon than Savannah Guthrie’s missing mother or missing FBI notes from the Epstein files.

Ooooh... I wonder how stinky it's going to be when they open the hatch. The Apollo missions were rank enough that it knocked divers back. The toilet MOSTLY worked while they were gone.

In all seriousness, one thing that might be worth doing today: Tell your Reps and Senators to call Adm. Richard Correll, the Commander of U.S. Strategic Command, which controls the nation's nukes, and remind him of *his* unique responsibility to refuse an illegal order.

It ’s a sign of our degeneracy as a society that the “concerns” aren’t about turning life into one big casino or about betting on war, just that someone might have an unfair advantage.
