My journey from the eminently decipherable retina to the entangled mess that is the mammalian motor system. No turning back now. !https://www.thetransmitter.org/methods/what-to-do-when-traditional-mechanistic-approaches-no-longer-work/

thetransmitter.orgWhen traditional mechanistic approaches no longer workMany complex behaviors have resisted mechanistic explanations. Deciphering them requires new approaches—and maybe a new concept of “understanding.”

First study out! Using a new cooperative paradigm and multi-agent inverse RL, we show that mice spontaneously adopt leader/follower roles, and the prefrontal cortex encodes these role dynamics and an egocentric social value map of the partner’s position. (1/3) www.nature.com/articles/s41...

We tracked mice in space! This video shows our estimate of their self-induced centripetal force during circling in 3D 👩‍🚀 Preprint thread below 👇

1/ New preprint! 🧪With @talmo.bsky.social and team, we used deep learning on archival NASA video of mice on the ISS. Turns out mice in microgravity become tiny acrobats: huddling to sleep, doing backflips, even briefly generating their own ~1g. #SpaceBiology #OpenScience #NASA #SLEAP

Our NASA funded study advances the technology readiness level of AI behavior quantification on the International Space Station. This is used for research into the effects of space radiation and microgravity on health, an important factor for longer missions! Animals were safely returned to earth :)

Psyched to announce our COSYNE workshop on social behaviors (Mar 17th, Cascais). We have a stellar lineup of speakers on topics from animal cooperation and aggression to the social dynamics of LLM agents. Co-organized with Libby Zhang (Allen Institute + UW). cosyne-social-behavior.github.io

Super excited to share the first cooperative foraging paradigm in freely interacting mouse pairs! Stable leader and follower roles emerge spontaneously and predict learning. Well-trained mice show stereotyped, role-specific “behavioral motifs” absent in naive animals (1/5) doi.org/10.1101/2025...

Having funded teams/contracts that required six figure+ funds a few times now, these numbers SOUND really huge in isolation to normal folks but they're not! Don't make floating numbers! I like to say things like this: "A cancer lab is basically a small business, with many jobs created by each grant"

Earth & Life Sciences Academics communicating the new EO about indirect rates, imma need you to improve yer messaging- maybe don't say "If I get a million dollar grant, my uni gets another $700k to keep the lights on & water running" bc isn't going to get the traction you think it is-

Great example of “last mile” tooling needed to bridge AI to scientific workflows. It’s hard to get these built in academia because they require a traditional software eng skillset (eg. building UIs) that scientists rarely have.

Replying to @drnancypadilla.bsky.social

4/ 🛠 To dig deeper, we used machine learning (@talmo.bsky.social SLEAP 🧠🤖) to track reward competition behavior. It revealed hidden differences like CD1 mice pressing against the reward port more than C57. These subtle behaviors could shape how we understand social competition.

You are up to date.
