2/3 Between 2013 and 2021, Ankara’s efforts faced significant resistance. I identify two reasons: political power in Pristina was fragmented, limiting Turkey’s influence over decision-making, while Kosovo’s contested statehood made some elites particularly sensitive to breaches of sovereignty.

3/3 The relationship changed after 2021. Turkey rehabilitated its image in Kosovo, while Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and growing concerns over Serbia shifted the relationship toward security cooperation. This resulted in a more institutionalized Turkey–Kosovo partnership.

Why have Turkey and Hungary become close political partners despite limited trade and little public demand for closer ties? My article argues that the answer lies in a common pushback against EU criticism and both regimes' regional ambitions beyond the EU. 1/4 www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

The latest publication by SUITS Postdoctoral Scholar @szerlasz.bsky.social examines the close partnership between Orbán's Hungary and Erdoğan's Turkey, a partnership based on shared interests and experiences of rejection by the EU. A great read!

The big question now is whether this partnership can survive political change. With a new government in Budapest, the coming years will show whether Turkey–Hungary cooperation has become institutionalized, or whether it was primarily a product of the Orbán–Erdoğan era. 4/4

Over the past decade, Budapest has backed Ankara inside the EU: from supporting Turkey's accession perspective to advocating softer approaches on issues like visa liberalization. In return, Turkey became an important partner for Hungary on migration, energy, and foreign policy coordination. 2/4

The partnership also extends beyond the EU. Hungary is the only EU observer in the Organization of Turkic States, where it supports Turkey's regional ambitions, including its role as an energy hub. These political links have become stronger than the underlying economic relationship. 3/4

This promises to be really interesting.... I had mostly written this relationship off as "populist authoritarians of a feather, flock together" but ‪László's argument is more nuanced than that and suggests something more deeply buried in the histories of Turkish and Hungarian nationalisms.

💥Hungary’s energy purchases could’ve funded about one-tenth of Putin’s war in Ukraine, if all revenues were used for war, Hungarian daily Népszava reports. 💰Between Feb 2022–Sep 2025, Hungary bought €15B gas and €8B oil from Russia — €23B total. Russia’s war costs are estimated at €100–300B.

Today the PKK, as a follow-up to its symbolic withdrawal ceremony in July, has announced its complete withdrawal from Turkey. My recent piece at the EPC summarizes the first year of this renewed Kurdish peace process.

🔴 Türkiye’s renewed Kurdish peace process could reshape EU–Türkiye relations, migration policy and regional security — but it is unfolding under authoritarian conditions. Peace without democracy is fragile. Read our latest commentary by @selvinkorkmaz.bsky.social 👇 www.epc.eu/publication/...

Trump–Putin meeting in Budapest = Orbán’s dream scenario. Two disruptors of the liberal order on home soil just months before the 2026 election. First invited to Egypt as the only Eastern European leader, he now hosts the illiberal axis. Orbán gains legitimacy without offering a single concession.

💥🤯 Reaction by Hungary’s pro-Kremlin leadership to Russia’s airstrike on Transcarpathia, home to Ukraine’s Hungarian minority: Viktor Orbán’s FM Péter Szijjártó avoids naming Russia or the region. President Sulyok, Orbán’s puppet, mentions “Russian” air strike in his post—but later deletes the word.

Why does Magyar, Orbán's challenger, want the Putin–Zelensky meeting to be held in Budapest? He’s preparing for the worst. If it takes place in HU, Orbàn would argue that his pro-Russia, anti-Ukraine line has been justified – and that could boost him in the 2026 elections. telex.hu/english/2025...
