The Physics Placer asset is now live! store.godotengine.org/asset/syrsly...

store.godotengine.orgPhysics Placer - Godot Asset StorePhysics-based object placement for the Godot 4 3D scene editor viewport that lets you drag objects around like ragdolls or shoot them into the scene or just drop them naturally.

I dunno... the approval process seems slow, and it's not clear what files I should be uploading, because different pages on the Godot site say different things... but it's not exactly difficult to post files to their site. Right now, Godot's Asset Store is only for free assets, but that may change.

This cracks me up, because it's basically a dev going "I got no character assets" then finding out he has tank models and running with it.

I showed my beach sim stuff to a friend and they immediately asked "Does the ocean push the player down the coast?" I never thought of that. Adding it now. I already have a current system for the river tool which can be repurposed. I'm also going to add faster currents further out.

I secured my physical-ish copy from Amazon. Hopefully, it'll arrive in time for me to play all day that Friday.

I only practice vibe coding when others pay for it and say I have to use it at work... but that's not game dev, and > 90% of my work is still manually coded/designed/implemented because I'm actually competent.

You know it. Why would I choose to use a technology which enriches horrible oligarchs. That contributes to wrecking the economy. One which is built off stolen labour, and causes environmental distress and works to destroy folks' cognitive functions.

I have a rather complex world system in the works for one of my game projects. This is a World Map screen in the scene editor that lets me switch cell scenes via the map. Way easier than remembering which cell is what. Idea inspired by my memory of classic Graal Online from over 2 decades ago.

Right now, it looks color-coded, but it's really not. Each scene has a single box as its ground because I was lazy and didn't want to figure out how to stitch the terrains. Everything's mostly flat land. I'll figure out terrains later, though.

I updated my profile to have links in the little cute tag-like bubbles. I'd prefer they just make the bio text length limit longer, but whatever.

I might get to 1K followers on Bluesky before I get to 1K followers on Twitch, and that's funny af.

I spent hours upgrading my VPS for Syrsly.com today due to AI attacks and PHP security warnings. I've asked my VPS provider if I could get migrated to a newer cluster with better stats. We'll see what they say, but there's a chance I'll have to step the migration and do one site/app at a time.

The security holes are fixed, though. 😅 That's at least fixed for now, until AI finds something new.

The irony is the AI only knew I was hosting a PHP site because I put a fake wordpress login page up to fool bots.

I managed to get almost a 1:1 conversion of the 2022 Unity BRB scene I never finished that has everything right down to video clip playback and reflective shaders. It's still missing the rain effects because I never really understood those rain effects in Unity. 😅 Oh and the camera is static.

Skyscapers in the background always had this messed up lighting, because they used Amplify Imposters which always messed up my lighting for whatever reason and Unity liked to cut off lighting for things far away. I'll just make new buildings later with my own imposters system.

I don't know who said this originally, but I'm stealing it.

Left a few discord servers this morning, so I got room to join new ones if anyone wants... but I rather use a different platform altogether. 😉

Going live on Twitch with Salamander County Public Television, then Arcade Emulator Stick! Get on the chat, and let's see what this emulator thingy can do! www.twitch.tv/syrsly

Street Fighter movie was dope!

Syrsly@syrsly.com

I'll be going to the Street Fighter movie on Friday, so I likely won't stream again until Saturday, and this weekend's stream is going to be all about my emulation arcade machine because I just think it'll be interesting to see what it can do.

Today, I finally hit a breakthrough with the beach shore sim in Godot and can collect the wave water inside holes in the sand. It hiccups a little when the holes are being generated at runtime, but it otherwise looks pretty fantastic. Better than anything I would have made for Unity.

Just like that, I have Unity palm trees in Godot! I used my own in-house tool because the app I bought for the job ended up being AI slop that didn't do the job. My tool imports textures and models but doesn't do shaders at all. Scripts are also out of scope. I'm working on particles and normal maps

Basic particles are done. Things where the particle just comes out and dies are surprisingly easy to convert. It becomes tricky when you add custom particle systems, which were pretty common in the Unity ecosystem for a while. I'm gonna stop at basic particles, though, for now. It's all I want.

I have logic in place to have any player or NPC walking on the sand piles to crush them back down. This came about because when I stacked sand, it was letting me basically stack under the player over and over and go sky high... and I thought that was too much.

A sand-rolling-off-sand effect would really sell the stomping effect and erosion effect. I also want better particles on the waves with some particle effects on the bottom of the wave when it hits the ground. Those are likely my next steps after I get palm trees imported properly.

#EpicGames switching to vibe coding is the weirdest lose-lose gambit i can think off: if it doesn't work out you have buried your technological lead, and if it works, then any kid with a claude subscription can give the #godot foundation a deferred rendered that outcompetes your licensing terms.

I've been looking at paid godot converters, and one of the ones I found on Itch was labeled not to have used AI but it looks like a typical AI interface and it is by an account that made tons of AI-generated YouTube shorts just a year ago. They also don't have a code portfolio at all.

Not one issue has been reported since release! 😆 Too early to declare this bug free? J/k... I was aware of several bugs before I released it. I'm not currently working on fixes, but I'll get around to it eventually

Should I stream my new arcade emulation station? It was an actual product, not custom built, so curious if that would be bad? It's clearly emulators on a joystick, though.

All I'm allowed to do on the "Icey" server is tally up streams I visited so I could meet an undisclosed quota of streams watched/lurked. Lurker communities suck in general, but I didn't realize it was one of those! Irony is if I didn't do anything, I'd get traffic from these losers.

I say losers, but some of the people there are just trying to get viewers any way they can. They're smartly gaming a system that's kind of broken. Getting the lurkers will help them reach Twitch affiliate or whatever, but it won't help them get better at streaming or at holding people's attention.

I will be streaming in a short while... gonna play one of my side distractions from the Steam Autumn Sale. Might be playing Valheim later tonight as well, though we haven't been streaming that as much, because the grind is real slow and my friends and I like to take frequent breaks.

I've been building this water ride in my fake theme park, and the idea was to have the ride cut holes in the terrain automatically, but this is getting kind of unruly.

I'm gonna shift back to manually sculpted terrain for this. It's more overall work but I won't have to fiddle with crazy auto-digging mechanics and will get a much more custom look that will hopefully look better.

In debt to a school so I can do things professionally but AI has taken over 99% of my skill set... other than the art part, which it's actively trying to take over.

feeling disillusioned towards gamedev, especially since the universal modder thing. people say that humans/artists will still be valued in an era of ai-slop, but if there is any audience i trust the least, it is gamers. tired of seeing opinions of bitter, entitled, and anti-art people ₍˄·͈༝·͈˄₎

Secured my Street Fighter tickets for a week from now and grabbed the center DBox seats!

I made a Blender addon a couple months ago and published it here: syrsly.itch.io/shape-face-b... Well, I'm making a similar but separate hair tool that is likely going to be very useful for PS1/N64/PS2 era hair cards. I know it's a little niche, but it's a style I wanted to emulate, so here we are.

Next stream, I'm switching to a Razer Kiyo Pro I found in a bulk bag of old webcams. It's still only 1080p, but it has great low light image quality and a great stereo microphone. Its mic shall be used when I don't want to wear the headphones.
