I'll be taking this painting bootcamp and would love having some familiar faces as art accountability buddies! Sylessae's portrait bootcamp helped me tremendously with face construction, so I'm very excited to finally get some structured painting guidance. ๐Ÿ™

Any time a painting feels scary or impossible, I have a hack I use to get through that feeling. Paint it badly. As many times as possible & as quickly as possible. By the 10th time, you start to realize nothing about the concept is scary enough that you can't at least try.

Another person joined us for the live enrollment today!! Down to 22 slots left.

I've been leaning hard into doing more of what I want specifically with my art and I just want to take a moment to really appreciate the folks who seem to be on board with that. I keep making stuff I love because you guys keep showing up for it. So thank you.

The answer is less about deciding what to create, and just start making something. A scribble, a rip in the paper, a smudge of paint. You'll find something in the uncertainty.

Leave one important reason to keep making art in the comments. I want this thread to be something to return to when someone is feeling like quitting. ๐Ÿ‘‡ ๐Ÿงต

It's tempting to seek out tutorials before you start drawing. You want to know what the next steps are, you want the most efficient and straightforward way. In a society where everything feels (like it should be) fast and easy, this seems like the safest route. But what do you sacrifice?

Make a mess and make discoveries. Let yourself make choices even if other people say they're wrong. Ask yourself what you like and explore more of those things. You'll get good at drawing. A finished piece will always be satisfying for different reasons. But you keep coming back for the discoveries

You keep coming back because you know that each time you do, you learn to trust yourself and your creative decisions a little more, and that's the carrot worth chasing.

It is in making discoveries that make art fun. They create dopamine. They create motivation. They are always there, like little hidden gems. But you have to go into the unknown to find these.

You don't always have to search the unknown alone, it's okay to get guidance and watch tutorials, but it shouldn't be the only way you explore drawing.

You outsource your curiosity. You stop making your own discoveries, which are a HUGE part of what makes ANYTHING exciting. These discoveries beckon you back. They're fun and rewarding.

What will you keep showing up for if the progress doesn't feel like your own? You might say that eventually you'll get good enough and its only the drawing that matters but I can tell you that you'll always be trying to do things better and moving the goal post. So where is the satisfaction?

If you don't know what to practice drawing, use this system: - Avoid overthinking (or journal your concerns) - Warm up with automatic drawing - As your drawing develops, ask yourself: Where do I lack confidence in this drawing? - Take note, study that specific topic later

Sad update, my giraffe pen ran out of ink

Letting my sketchbook be a place where I work fast and in permanent medium is always really humbling. It's easy to look at these in comparison to full illustrations or my developed sketches and feel like they aren't good enough. I think this is a trap we all fall into sometimes.
