Lula's win rules, but we've got to expect Trump's going to be big mad and want to punish Brazil for this. So a priority for a Democrat Congress will need to be taking away the ridiculous discretion the presidency has on harming other countries (tariff options especially, but also sanctions).

I can access thousands of hours of high quality academic lectures/documentaries/explainers for the cost of my internet bill linking to open access primary sources and secondary literature on a massive number of topics. When folks say "internet bad" most of it is folks choosing bad content.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

That "productive capital" doesn't account for externalities or how concentrations of wealth distort market forces towards wealthy, minority preferences. Plus the level of political interference we see. That's what the taxes discourage.

Most billionaire wealth isn't in yachts or jewelry — that's just a few percent of it. Most is productive business capital: companies that employ people, build things, and fund research. Tax that wealth and you're taxing the businesses that employ us all. Cato's Adam Michel explains.

The movie was a hell of a ride to see and this interview was an extra ride on top of it! And I think its nice Nathan got to be interviewed by someone similar to Elizabeth Holmes (in that they both liked the movie Elf)

Katie Drummond@katie-drummond.bsky.social

Nathan Fielder is on the cover of @wired.com this month. I interviewed him about Elizabeth Holmes, his extraordinary new film, and whether anyone can ever know what the hell is going on with another person. An exclusive! And quite an experience. Read the full interview here:

If you want to make sure guys like this don't control the government, we've gotta fix voting patterns that look like this:

Politico@politico.com

“I’m old. I’ve paid my home off,” said Ray Warner, a 72-year-old Akron resident. “Why would I pay property tax?” Across the country, homeowners are asking the same question and revolting against property taxes at a scale not seen in a half century.

(Quoting because I can't reply) It's not "much, much lower", his recalculation was 8.7 drinks per day trying to account for potential data errors and I think its worth noting a hard 16.67 drinks/day cap is likely an over-correction. The chart may be a bit high, but does seem in the ball park.

GPT-Ern Malley@denam.bsky.social

THE BAD CHART (It's based on bad survey analytics, the top decile is likely much, much lower)

If Tesla actually brings this to market (possible, Musk is willing to dodge regulations enough for this), the car will be completely uninsurable. It will be the Florida oceanfront property of car insurance

Yahoo Finance@yahoofinance.com

"Flying cars are real!" 🚀 Elon Musk and Tesla showcase the new Roadster.

The level of incompetence on display is hilarious to be honest! He's using tons to avoid the comparisons to US diesel consumption (as of the latest EIA numbers I could find, 2.94 million barrels/day) when the November figures amount to ~.12 million barrels/day, or about 4%, but then sold globally.

Kyle Cheney@kyledcheney.bsky.social

The United States is now importing fuel from Russia, per President Trump.

Its a quite small figure even as Isaias hits gulf refineries' production levels and Iran keeps ramping up attacking on tankers near Hormuz and Ansarallah hits the Saudis. All to try and avoid the things that would actually help: serious concessions to Iran and stopping Saudi intervention in Yemen

On a practical level, this is just moronic. Best case scenario for Trump/Hegseth is the guy gets all weepy and begs for his life in which case at least you don't get young guys going "dude he's cool". WAY more likely he goes out defiant and you make him look like a baddest to be copied.

What. The. Actual. Fuck.

The preacher and mayor who demanded to do an immediate "reversal of the curse" rather than just waiting to the end of the meeting are assholes. OK you think the "curse" was real. You'll be fine to have some moment of silence at the end. Demanding it instantly is their demand for culture dominance.

This explains why he can't feed anyone, too afraid that eating will make them woke

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Hegseth: "It's worth saying again so the fake news understands it. We are no longer the woke department or the weak department. Simple translation of that -- no fatties no trannies no beardos no weirdos no wimps no radicals. Just warriors."

Looking back the non-aliens/pawnstars History Channel documentaries I loved as a kid and made me a "nerd" had about as much depth as a YouTube ancient battles channel with a cartoon avatar and explosions in every thumbnail. The youths don't know how bad it was back in the day.

PSA for Atlanta bike/scooter riders: if you're in downtown or Midtown you are almost always safer riding on the street than on the sidewalk. The drivers are already having to go slow, the sidewalks have bigger bumps than you think, and hitting a pedestrian is more likely than a car.

So this is what's left of the "non-MAGA" Republican party

ProPublica@propublica.org

15/ ProPublica is revealing the existence of the case for the first time. We reviewed a trove of evidence gathered by the FBI and thousands of pages of legal records, and have independently corroborated much of Kao’s account. This is the first piece of an ongoing series:

This actually brings up a pretty big legal question. What exactly is a "vote" in the US Senate and when is it finalized? And if old age confusion can switch it, what other types of confusion should count for potentially changing a vote?

The Tennessee Holler @thetnholler.bsky.social

JUST NOW: A confused, clearly not-there McConnell votes “AYE” after almost voting NO with Dems but getting *corrected* by handlers around him

OK yeah this is a series of evidences for really harmful social dynamics. Anyone liking my last thread should read this and I fully endorse the critiques.

some middle rat history, w/clarifications: 1) I should have titled my previous "AI Safety Is Mostly A Sex Cult In Berkeley, California" so people would stop arguing with me about people who aren't in Berkeley, California. 2) The sex cult part of this is both predatory and integral to what they do.

Note I still critique the term "high control group" in much the same way I critique "cult" because it still is orthogonal to abuse dynamics (plenty of healthy "high demand/control" places as long as there is voluntary exit and lots of high abuse "low control" movements), but that's a minor side note
