Happy National Flash Fiction Day, everyone! 🥳 Here's my offering in the #FlashFlood - 'Down From the Door' #NFFD2026

In Hookland folklore, rivers and all their tributaries are highways for spirits. For not all souls travel by the county’s corpse roads. Some swim, some float. This makes the confluence of streams and old fords potent places of sorcery, powerful places of peril.

In an attempt to break the cycle of signing up for races with good intentions and then failing to train, and also do a bit of good for some kittens, I'm doing the Cats Protection Autumn Zoomies Challenge - 13 days of running in October!

This will (hopefully) force me to actually stick to the first month of my 12 week training plan for the Winter Round Sheffield Run in January... The plan starts on Monday, but parkrun this morning (at the gorgeous Rother Valley) was my first run of October - 1 down, 12 to go 🏃‍♀️

'After the grandfather clock metronomes your absence.' Love this gorgeous micro from @nomad-sw18.bsky.social!

"After writhing rain twists the motorway into a black eel. After prophetic rain heralds the doorbell. After the grandfather clock metronomes your absence." Thank you 101 Words for publishing my little tale. And to @natflashfictionday.bsky.social for shortlisting it. share.google/UG5gWq61eKuu...

Haven't done any crafting in forever, but was recently inspired to finish this little guy - he's from a kit that I started and then abandoned about 2 years ago. He's a bit wonky but I like him 😊

Writers are in the business of being as human as we goddamn can. That's measured by vibes, by the way we feel, by gauging how well we’ve managed to communicate the thing we want to communicate in our writing.

This is why I restarted having singing lessons as an adult a few years ago (after stopping when i was 18), just for the joy of it!

Gretchen McCulloch@gretchenmcculloch.com

One of the great joys of my adult life has been realizing that I can just pick up a new skill every so often, take a fun little class in it weekly for a year or two, and simply enjoy meeting people and getting medium proficient and not attempting to become professional in it at all!

We are thrilled to share that our Human Authored scheme is now live. This scheme has been designed for the benefit of SoA members, to help identify works written by humans in a market increasingly flooded by AI-generated books.

Amused by the fact that the #BitesizedBookClub session focusing on happy/positive stories is the one that has generated the most divisive opinions and (friendly) disagreement so far 😄 Thanks to everyone who came for the interesting discussions!

Because, here's the thing. We're told: "it's the way of the world; it's human nature," as an excuse for every act of cruelty or selfishness we witness, in the hope that we'll just stand by and watch. But it's not human nature. It's human choice. And we don't have to stand by. We can stand up.

'Stella felt the universe hold its breath, wrap its extravagance around her (her! tiny, insignificant Stella!)' Speaking of happy stories, this one by @emilyrinkema.bsky.social is a moment of joy encapsulated!

Read the one and only Emily Rinkema’s (@emilyrinkema.bsky.social) brilliant micro, “Nine-fucking-teen,” in The Bulb Region today. “…and there she was, clicked into the moment as if it were a groove, as if this crisp moment were the sole purpose of evolution…” bulbregion.com/Nine-fucking...

Well, I settled on four that *I* think are happy. Will see what everyone else makes of them at the session next week! 😊

Today's debate, as I try to finalise my choices for this month's #BiteSizedBookClub... how much of a bittersweet edge can I allow myself before I decide something doesn't qualify as a happy flash fiction? 😄

This is a beautiful story

A few days ago, I stood in the graveyard of an 1100 year old church, getting damper and damper in the drizzling rain. A woman walked into the graveyard, waved, said hello, and, as we had previously arranged, handed me a paper bag full of human bones. The life of a churchwarden is a strange one...
