Days before Brazil's election, Meta briefly blocked President Lula's campaign page from running political ads and removed an Instagram profile behind a viral video on Flávio Bolsonaro. Both decisions were reversed, but raised public concerns. Brazilian investigative journalist Laís Martins reports.

Senate Judiciary held a hearing for the new antitrust division nominee, Adam Candeub, today. It didn't go that well. Candeub dodged questions from R and D senators on the First Amendment, saying his job as the general counsel of the FCC precluded him from answering.

"The question we should be asking here is: what do Musk and Vance and others hope to achieve by such obviously incendiary rhetoric? Perhaps the issues of shrinking resources — in housing, healthcare, policing and education — and the interests of the world’s richest man are connected after all."

My latest on Google search remedies

Tech Policy Press@techpolicypress.bsky.social

A US court found Google to be a search monopoly. But the remedies hinge on limited data sharing and syndication requirements—meaning potential rivals must still invest heavily to succeed, argues Sumit Sharma. Real competition will depend on how these rules are implemented and enforced.

My Op-Ed in @commondreams.org on how our 4th amendment protections are being undermined - do we want our rights to depend on tech firm T&Cs? Also the FBI confirmed it is buying data that can be used to track people - exactly the concern that @anthropic.com raised hat tip @americans4ri.bsky.social

Sam Altman himself admitted the whole thing was “rushed” and that “the optics don’t look good,” which is one way to describe handing the Pentagon sweeping AI capabilities while your competitor gets blacklisted for insisting on civil liberties protections.

People assume that gov’t inaction is the best policy strategy to support Little Tech. We pulled together conservative, progressives, LT companies, investors and found 7 discrete fed. & state policies to support Little Tech that could garner bipartisan and industry support.

All the cozying up to the Trump Administration coming back to bite Google ! ‘America First’ is increasingly ‘America Alone’ which means naturally but slowly (very slowly ) foreign markets shut out foreign digital infrastructure. How’s that for your bottom line Goolge?

Shocking to see the Wapo decimate headcount. Some systemic reasons are not in our control: like print decline. Some reasons are: like Google’s monopoly in search & the power this gives Google over publishers & how their content is used and attributed

The UK CMA just published proposals to give publishers more say over how their content is used and attributed in search, AI overviews & AI mode ⬇️ The DOJ is cross-appealing the Google search decision: an opportunity to re-up it asks on publisher opt-outs ?

Anti-monopoly is the answer to this moment. We can take on corporate power and create markets that actually work for people. I'm running for Congress b/c monopolies make our lives more expensive. The only way through the crisis is to unmake their power.

Sumit Sharma@sumitecon.bsky.social

Courts alone cannot check the corrupting influence of billionaires or challenge the market & political power of the largest corporations. We need legislators like @reedforcongress.bsky.social who can take up this challenge. See ⬇️ for the full Q&A @nextgencompetition.bsky.social

1. We must understand how and why a technology works for it to produce growth- Gen AI is a black box ! 2. The ability of innovators to challenge and take business from incumbents - Big Tech's dominance is a barrier not enabler.

Of course Apple fights tooth & nail for its App Store monopoly and closed ecosystem…it makes over $100 billion from services with a 7️⃣5️⃣ % !! gross margin which makes up 5️⃣0️⃣ % of its profits !

My latest Op-Ed in @commondreams.org House Republicans keep promising a crusade against Big Tech’s power. If they were serious, they would likely find support from their Democratic colleagues
