We’re recruiting a postdoc to follow up on an astonishing number of mutants with craniofacial phenotypes from our ENU mutagenesis screen. Great opportunity for someone interested in developmental genetics, craniofacial biology, mouse genetics & gene discovery. Please share!

Congratulations to Rebekah Rushforth on a masterful defense of her dissertation last week! Lucky for us she will stay on as a postdoctoral fellow for a bit after graduation in December.

Always a pleasure to participate for a couple of days in the legendary Cold Spring Harbor "Mouse Course." Thanks to Matt A, Katie F, Danelle D and Loydie J-M for the invite. Hope to do it again. Best of luck to the great young scholars i met this week.

Key finding: despite acting in the same pathway, loss of Piga causes major defects in cortical organization, myelination, and cerebellar development, while Pgap2 deletion has surprisingly mild effects. Great work by first author Jennifer Watts and co-author Jesus Leal! #Genetics #RareDisease

Very excited and grateful to receive a new NIH Notice of Award for a 5-year project. 🎉 This one was a reminder that science rewards persistence. Submission journey: • A0 (7/2023): 27% • A1 (3/2024): Not Discussed 😬 • New A0 (10/2024): 22% • A1 (7/2025): 2% • NOA (5/2026)

Total time from first submission to award: 1,033 days (~3 years). Huge thanks to NIH Program Staff, collaborators, trainees, and lab members who helped improve the science every step of the way.

For anyone revising/resubmitting right now: if you believe in the idea, keep going. Resilience matters. Now it’s time to put another poker in the fire and start the next project.

Really nice to be back in Cincinnati yesterday for the CCRF Research Seminar Series. Great conversations, great science, and fun to reconnect with colleagues. Thanks to Kenny Campbell for the invite!

Big thanks to Andrea Miller, Ivan Martinez Duncker, and the CDG CARE team for an outstanding Scientific & Family Weekend in Orlando. Hearing directly from PIGA families and clinicians was humbling and motivating. Strong energy around advancing gene replacement therapy for PIGA and other CDGs. Onward

Heading to my first CDG (Congenital Disorders of Glycosylation) Scientific & Family Conference this week in Orlando (CDG-CARE). Looking forward to reconnecting with colleagues and sharing our latest work on Piga gene replacement therapy—led by Jennifer Watts, Ph.D.

Rebekah Niewoehner, Rolf Stottmann & co found that pathogenic Ttc21b variants, the primary #cilia gene, contribute to primary #microcephaly, with homozygous #mouse mutants showing severe #microcephaly due to impaired neural progenitor proliferation and differentiation. Read doi.org/10.1242/dmm....
