You may have seen pictures, but have you ever seen video of a gigantic jet #TLE from space? Astronaut Jeanette Epps captured this incredible sequence on July 20th, 2024 for the DTU/@science.esa.int Thor-Davis experiment. 🧪🔭 youtu.be/xN2J7_rOBJY Credit: ESA/NASA/J. Epps Processing: Simeon Schmauß

From NASA We’ve known since the Apollo missions that dust can present challenges for explorers on other worlds. Now, scientists are using instruments on the Perseverance rover to understand the risks of dust on Mars and find clues about how to protect future crews on the Red Planet.

I have been working on visualizing the appearance of proposed space mirrors on the night skies. As the beam approaches it appears as a column of light emerging from the darkness. At the beam center of a 600 km high 54 m. mirror the reflection gives a light similar to that of 38 Full Moons, 9.5 Lux.

Another interesting result is that the average white dwarf is, in fact, white, instead of the pale blue that they are usually depicted as 🔭 arxiv.org/abs/2610.18966

My phd office-mate Mark Hollands has spent years working out what colour some weird stars would appear as to the human eye, and finally has a paper out! Most notably... one is green! #astrosci 🔭 arxiv.org/abs/2610.18966

As part of NASA's efforts to modernize and unify its websites, the raw image websites (Mars 2020, MSL, Psyche, Cassini, InSight) will be unified into a new tool. This will try to maintain as much compatibility as possible, but there will be some necessary changes.

NEW: On Oct 20, Japan will launch its most audacious space mission. It’s hoping to fly to Mars, land twice (!) on Phobos (“fear”), steal pieces of that alien moon, and bring ‘em home. That’s right: to pull of this heist, Japan must confront fear itself. @science.org www.science.org/content/arti...

So it is somewhat appropriate that for an astronomical-scale MRI we use NIfTI files and a 3D viewer. We already have 7 slices of Maki, Greebo and Luna, and there are more to come. So this is what we got so far for Cas A light echo by JWST 🔭. NASA, ESA, CSA, STScI. more credits in the page below.

A cool behind-the-scenes of the famous 'Hello Earth' photograph from Artemis II. It was captured by a camera mounted to the window of the Orion capsule, so the interior reflected in that window.

I also reversed the SuperView effect that was distorting the horizon in the video. More details below from my last Artemis project:

This video was captured by a space modified GoPro Hero 4 camera. Unfortunately it was shooting with the SuperView capture mode, which caused significant distortion, especially visible as a bent horizon. Before and after comparison below:

You can hear fequent clanking sounds from the RCS thrusters activating. The thruster plumes also interact with the air, causing rapid changes in the plasma tail. The camera is mounted directly to the window, so those noises are picked up very well and probably louder than what the astronauts heard.

The audio was really noisy in the original video files, likely affected by electronic interference. The camera also applied automatic gain to the audio, so the noise was very amplified in quiet phases. I managed to undo that automatic gain and clean up the noise with a mix of python and Audacity.
