the idea phase is the easiest and least valuable part of professional creativity. read the first draft of the first Star Wars if you doubt me Great art is made in the grinding, often miserable collision between the ethereal substance of an idea and the mud and blood and friction of reality

It's October - and there's a great lineup of new releases coming this month! You can view the full post here: ajcalvin.net/the-indie-au... (There are a lot of amazing titles! I'll tag the authors in the comments.) #booksky #newreleases #indiebooks #comingsoon

Just two weeks to go until this hits the shelves! Incredibly proud of this series, and of this book, so I can’t wait to share it with you all! #BookSky #indieauthor #fantasybook

Had some *very* exciting post arrive today but I strictly can’t talk about it so instead you’ll have to read this post of my talking around it in that annoying, vague way that everyone hates. But yeah, some cool shit comin’ in 2027, folks!

Reuters got some of the IPO docs. Anthropic is a total dog of a company. Spent $12.6bn to make $4.6bn in revenue in 2025, $7.33bn of which was compute costs. Operating loss of $8bn. Losses getting worse year over year. Amazing stuff www.reuters.com/business/fin...

Before becoming a parent I didn’t appreciate what normal, mid-range volume is like. Life after kids is either way too loud or suspiciously quiet. There is no middle ground.

This really is the perfect joke because if I’m right then we’ll all just suffer horrible economic consequences…but at least I’d be right And if I’m wrong then the species will be extinct and there’ll be no one around to say “I told you so” except for some mildly apologetic chatbots Lose lose bebe!

I told everyone I invented magic that would fix everything wrong with the world so they gave me all their money and I spent it all on a fancy light show that runs on diesel and now they’re getting nervous so I’m telling them all the magic is so powerful it could kill us all. This is AI right now.

⚔️ BOOK RELEASE ⚔️ I didn't think this day would come, but FALL RED EMPIRE, the final book in the BURN RED SKIES trilogy, releases TODAY! ⚔️📚⚔️ As always, thank you for your support. It's been such a journey! I still need some time to get used to saying it, but the trilogy is officially CONCLUDED ❤️

*sigh* They are laughing. Openly trolling the fact that our democracy can be bought and paid for because there’s nothing to stop them. “My competitive spirit compelled me to match the donation” is two fingers up to everyone supporting this shite. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

I’m also truly amazed and grateful for all the support from fellow authors, from editors, artists and other folks in the publishing space, and from readers, too. My key takeaways from year three: Writing is fun, publishing is scary, both are very rewarding if you’re willing to put the work in!

Kids keep you grounded. I’m going to some fancypants awards do next week, so I tried on my tux to check that it still fits etc etc. One of my 7yos told me I look like a butler.

I have a theory (more of a hunch, in truth) that, while Covid traumatised the entire planet, the rich and powerful were—somewhat ironically—adversely affected because, perhaps for the first time, they were proven to be just as human/mortal as everyone else. Their response was to lose their minds.

This hunch feels played-out by the fact that the general insanity of the world over appears to have accelerated since 2020/21. A lot of these folks genuinely believe they are better/more than other people (how else could they be so powerful, otherwise?) Revealing that to be a lie has broken them.

This was my 500th post on BlueSky and I used it to be pithy and snarky and generally pissy at some people being complete, unabashed wankers. Pretty fitting, actually…now that I think about it 🤔

Can’t wait for the fourth major global economic shock of my lifetime. I’m 37. This one is gonna be caused by… *checks notes* …a bunch of dorky tech bros wantonly lying about the capabilities of their predicative text machines because they think they’re making God. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

✅ Milestone achieved I finished editing my next project (my first ever attempt at a novella)! Now to typeset it and get it ready for production! More info to follow (once I’ve had a breather! 😮‍💨)

One thing parenting in the UK doesn’t really prep you for is how much of your time will be spent on disused industrial estates (that have since been converted into soft play centres). Not knocking it, my kids love it and it’s a local business, but there’s a mildly dystopian vibe to the whole thing.

And yes, give me a hike through the woods any day of the week! But sometimes the ferals just wanna bounce around on some colourful inflatables with some awful pop music blaring out at full volume. Kids be kids, innit 🤷🏻‍♂️

And to accompany this re-release, I’m also set to publish my first ever novella, too. It will be adjacent to The Hunter’s Lament and will be the first of my stories made available on KU. The story is written and is currently being edited, ready for 2027.

Next up: a huge, super secret project! A standalone novel that I am absolutely buzzing for! This one is in first draft stage too, but if you enjoyed The Kings of the Wyld and/or The Gentlemen Bastards sequence, this one will be for you 👀
