Lula: "We had to overcome foreign interference through digital platforms, which we will have to regulate. A crime in the digital world must be treated the same as a crime in the real world. We cannot have monstrous companies earning millions... not paying taxes... wanting to steer elections."

Shall I show how old I am? I shall show how old I am. First five RPGs played: 1. AD&D 2. Traveller 3. Runequest 4. Champions 5. Call of Cthulhu (3 would have been 1st edition Chivalry & Sorcery, except, well, this was an early FGU game, and we know what FGU stands for, don't we?)

24) I am reminded of an anecdote Dorothy Parker told about Ernest Hemingway, when he heard another writer had found his ideal writing retreat. "'----,' said Mr Hemingway, mentioning a certain word by name, 'the only good place to work is in your head.'"

21) I like my characters to have distinctive voices, but I prefer them to emerge naturally, instead of using catchphrases or such. Though I have shamelessly used catchphrases, gimmicks, appalling fake accents, and suchlike. Call me a raging hypocrite if you like. 22) 67. Not as bad as usual.

17) I like cats. Not sure I could fit one in the current concept, though. Besides, it would probably not survive. Cute furry animals do not have plot immunity where I'm concerned: there's a *reason* a beta reader called me "Kitten Killer".

18) I'll do flashbacks or flashforwards if I see the need... which, so far, I usually don't. I have to take notes if I'm doing a complicated non-linear narrative. Too much like hard work if you ask me.

16) I am a depressed introvert with no life, so clearing my schedule isn't going to be a problem. Besides, I started NaNoWriMo in 2003, so if I haven't learned to keep November clear by now, there's no hope for me.

14) I aim for a sort of immediacy, so the reader gets into the viewpoint of the character and can empathize with their current sensations. Well, that's what I aim for. Whether or not I hit it is another matter.

10) Might do. I've generally got a fairly solid visual imagination, so I know where everything is relative to everything else. May add a map for the reader's convenience for this November's project, if I can figure out how to make one.

11) OK... A perfectly round stone, about the size of a pea, with a peculiar iridescent sheen. A mediaeval manuscript with a repeated text decoration that exactly matches an anomalous waveform picked up by a cutting edge science project. A talking snake with a cat's head....

9) Never touch them. Too much like filling out forms. Also, most of the questions, I can't even answer for myself, never mind my characters. "What is your greatest fear?" I dunno. Sometimes it's the inevitable end of the universe in darkness and death. Other times, it's spiders.

6) It would be charity to describe it as a process, really. Have an introductory scene in mind, have some sense of an ending, have some characters, hope those characters can carry me from the one to the other. I write from page one to the end, because I am a lazy so-and-so, and if I cherry-pick...

Well, if you take empathy too far, you could wind up being horribly executed for everyone else's crimes, and you wouldn't want that, would you?

"WWW 2"? I know Web 2.0 was a competitive sort of environment, but that's taking it a bit far IMHO.

But the best thing is that everything is annotated with these boastful, sometimes handwritten notes that Sir Humphry has (I assume personally) dotted around the place… They’re often about the achievements of one distant relative or another. Here’s one of Cousin Roger’s “killing weapons”…

UK peeps - can we get a bit more oomph behind this one?

Just to riff on this for just a moment: science fiction is full of really cool images. Lunar colonies, Martian landscapes, big big rockets, sandworms, blasters, vibroknives, chip heads ... but the thing that always held the story together was how human beings interacted with those BDOs.

I read all the science fiction classics that he claims as inspiration, but unlike him, _I UNDERSTOOD THEM._ (Utterly tangential, but Grok is offensive as a term for an AI that literally cannot grok.)

I was gonna say: straight guys who have Big Feelings about this character and people liking him have been a thing since the game came out and a) someone got hit on BY A DUDE and/or b) someone saw his GF get really into the pretty vampire and became scared that he might have to wash occasionally.

Today is World Day Against the Death Penalty. Let us seek to end this inhumane and immoral practice around the world, especially here in America. It is so deplorable that in the 21st century this is going on in a modern democracy.

It’s a cliche oft quoted that there’s a crucial distinction between wanting to write a novel, and wanting to have written a novel. Generative AI is for people who want to have written a novel.

Live your life so that, when you die, social media isn't flooded with comments about what a nasty vicious lying piece of shit you were. Sound advice, I think. Jeffrey Archer should've taken it.

Catching up here. (#Novelmber) 3) Not a lot, but a story idea hit me between the eyes on Saturday night, so now I'm thinking it through. 4) This one, probably 3rd person, multiple POV.

It’s time for Plotober fun!! Are you writing a 50,000 word novel in November? Sounds hard! Why not join us and just write 49,999 words instead? Take it easy. #novelmber

This is actually hell, right?

In addition to some sensible things, the RNLI merch included a replacement for the world's crappest lightsabre, which went missing after an Eleven Month Group meeting more than twenty years ago.

Heh. I just frustrated a postman. Heard the knock, got to the door *before* he'd finished shoving the "sorry we missed you" card through the letterbox. (He was delivering my order of RNLI merch, so I'm happy.)

If you have more empathy for the box of blinky lights than you do for, say, trans people or refugees, you are frankly a bad person

Does my Speak-n-Spell feel pain when I type O-U-C-H? The jury is out. Philosophers and neuroscientists say that's fucking stupid, but I called a guy from the Center for Pretending that Household Electronics Are Sentient and he said there's no way to know for sure.
