#StetChat | Agreed! Doing a sample edit from the middle of a piece feels like only seeing the middle 20 minutes of a movie and being expected to provide guidance on changes for the entire 2-hour film.

A8. Ahh.. the witching hour projects… 🕯️ watching the clock hands arc past midnight... music full blast in the headphones, tiptoeing down the hall for tea... and then sending an email off as the sun comes up!! (Not too long ago lol) 🌝 #StetChat

A3: A student with a dissertation told me over and over how much he appreciated me. And then he didn't pay. I asked for payment repeatedly and he kept saying Oh in two weeks... I finally emailed his supervisor, and then the client paid but called and excoriated me until I hung up on him. #StetChat

my brain cannot handle words that have or feel like they should have double consonants in the middle. i won my school spelling bee in the 4th grade, but fuck if i don't need a computer to tell me how to spell those shits

#StetChat | Trick question since I'm a night owl (normally going to bed around 2 or 3 in the morning) anyway! LOL! Decent communication with clients and making sure I always provide "estimated" and "approximate" timeframes instead of hard-and-fast deadlines helps eliminate that pressure completely.

#StetChat A7 No Frankenstein's monster here! I do sample edits for free but I specifically ask for the middle for partially this reason. I always ask about previous editors and what stage of drafting so this might help catch that early on too.

I usually work at least a few hours every weekend day, and take time off during the week instead. I try to remember to schedule-send emails when I write them on weekends, but sometimes just send them reflexively. #StetChat

I actually learned this one lololol Mostly because I use the same trick as who/whom: rearranging the sentence or switching pronouns to make subject-object more obvious. #StetChat

#StetChat | We get what looks like requests like these all the time at the EFA. The two main ways I've avoided involving myself in Franken-edits are to (1) charge for sample edits and (2) require that all sample edits start from the beginning of the manuscript, not some random chapter in the middle.

Big red flag for a franken-edit is when the author is asking you to do a sample edit of a random chapter. That usually means they're getting other people to edit the other chapters. #StetChat

A8: My version of staying up into the witching hour is working on a weekend. Working longer days doesn't always lend itself to high-quality editing, so spreading the overtime out over two more days helps with quality control. I had to work a weekend or two last month. #StetChat

A8: When I was working to edit and proofread a monthly community newspaper, I’d often have to keep working until around 8 or 9 p.m. since I had such a tight turnaround and folks would often get me their articles late. I’m glad I’m a night owl at those moments! #StetChat

A7. I’ve never had a Dr. Frankenstein contact me directly, but I’ve definitely seen some calls for editors that have given off heavy “I Am Conducting An Experiment” energy. 🧪 #StetChat

A8: There have been a few “edits are complete!” emails sent to authors at 4:30 a.m. this year…but in my defense, I normally fall asleep around 3 a.m., so that’s nowhere as bad as it sounds. #StetChat
