Check out this cool chem bio story covering D2B, covalent probes, phenotypic screening and target ID (and more)! Congratulations to @stephanhacker2.bsky.social and team!

Finding new covalent antibiotics usually hits two major walls: the time-consuming synthesis of tailored libraries and the challenge of target identification after phenotypic screening. Storm van der Voort addressed both bottlenecks in one comprehensive workflow. (1/8) doi.org/10.26434/che...

🔹Direct-to-Biology (D2B) Screening: Storm established a combinatorial, in-plate synthesis approach to screen crude compounds directly against MRSA. Crucially, hit potency and rank order closely matched between crude mixtures and re-synthesized, pure compounds. (3/8)

🔹 Target ID via isoDTB-ABPP: Moving beyond phenotypic hits, he used our chemical proteomics platform to determine the mechanism of action. The compounds selectively engaged the catalytic cysteine (C111) of the essential enzyme HMG-CoA synthase, efficiently inhibiting its activity in vitro. (4/8)

With antimicrobial resistance (AMR) associated with nearly 5 million deaths annually, speeding up early-stage discovery is crucial. Here is how Storm and the team tackled it: (2/8)

I had a great time visiting the University of Michigan yesterday and giving a talk with a very good discussion afterwards. It was amazing to re-connect with Alexey Nesvizhskii and Fengchao Yu and discuss all the cool new applications that are possible in MS-based proteomics using FragPipe.

Thank you to Alexey Nesvizhskii and Amanda Garner for hosting me and to everyone, who attended the talk, showed me around Ann Arbor or took the time to meet with me. #ChemBio #ChemSky #Science

Sometimes spontaneous interactions work out great. Last week, when I posted here about my US trip, Dina Schuster (Dina Schuster) reached out, if I would consider adding a trip to Stanford University. I was extremely happy about the invite and we made it possible on super short notice. (1/3)

I really enjoyed presenting our science and discussing their many insightful questions afterwards. Thank you again for the invite, for making this possible and for showing me around the campus. (3/3) #ChemBio #Chemistry #Science

I had a great time visiting UCSF last week. Thank you very much to Balyn Zaro for inviting me and to everyone, who attended my talk, met with me for a great discussion or joined us for dinner. Thank you so much for having me! (1/2) #ChemBio #Chemistry #Science

How can chemical reaction products efficiently be isolated using crystalography? In this great resource, Jacob DeForest gives an insightful practical guide on crystallization for Medicinal Chemists. pubs.acs.org/jmcmar/... #ChemSky #MedChem #ChemBio #Solids #Crystals #Crystallization #Science

Congratulations to Angad Mehta on being one of the 2026 ICBS Young Chemical Biologist Awardees. He gave a great award lecture: "In vitro immune-like systems for continuous directed evolution of biologics" #Evolution #Antibodies #ChemBio #ChemSky #Science

Thank you to the International Chemical Biology Society for inviting me to present some of our latest research today in San Francisco. #ICBS2026 is truly an amazing conference. Thank you to Michelle Arkin and her team for the great organization. Photo credit: @billy-ng.bsky.social
