Spent the last few days stunned by how good ChatGPT ”deep research” is. It takes a detailed science question, thinks for 20 mins and then spits out a well structured, comprehensive and almost completely correct answer, with citations (not hallucinated!). It generated very promising hypoteses for me.

I spent most of today cleaning the fridge and doing dishes in 20 min bursts, while chatGPT was doing research for me. Fun! Although now I’m questioning if we’re automating the right jobs? I’m kidding, I was excited to see each time what ChatGPT came up with, and mulling next steps.

Of course in retrospect it's obvious but I only realized now: *all* the work on the publisher's side is amenable to automation by AI. It's inevitable. We'll be human scientists working in real labs on one side, and AI on the other. Doesn't even need to be fancy AGI AI, just regular shitty AI will do

Words fail me...

Receiving manuscripts, communicating with reviewers & authors, making decisions, typesetting, updating the website, billing, advertising... it'll be AI all the way, for all but a small number of truly serious journals. I would be shocked if this is not already happening at MDPI and Frontiers
