We need a RICO act for corporate crime. Dollar General routinely overcharges customers. In NY, it's paying $1.9M after it failed 43% of price inspections & overcharged on 14% of items. Many states have found the same. But it keeps happening, because the fines are too small. ag.ny.gov/press-releas...

If the states succeed in breaking up Live Nation, it could stop or reverse the decline of independent music clubs, which are essential to bands just starting out. "Independents 'are the ones who give us our first shows. They’re the ones who work with us when we can draw 100 people,' he said."

I love this video. Tribal nations across the country are building their own broadband networks, gaining control over infrastructure that's essential to their communities. It's been such an honor for ILSR to help lead dozens of these tribal broadband bootcamps over the last five years.

2. In 2018, The Knot was taken over by the private equity firm Permira. It then went on an acquisition spree, rolling up 14 digital wedding planning platforms and businesses. With Zola, it would utterly dominate.

1. In Phoenix, we teamed up with Local First Arizona to bring independent business owners together with Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes @azagmayes.bsky.social to talk about how corporate concentration is destroying their industries — and what states should do about it.

One reason prices are soaring: Amazon uses at least 3 different price-fixing tactics to compel competing retailers to raise their prices. How is that possible? This smart 15-minute Business Insider video explains, drawing on evidence uncovered ahead of Amazon's upcoming antitrust trials.

barnraisingmedia.comPeople Won’t Defend a Democracy They Haven’t ExperiencedFor many Americans, democracy is an abstraction. We need experience with democracy as something we actually do: a system we participate in to shape the world around us.

It asks: “What would it take to rebuild the conditions for people to participate in public life at all?” Reviving democracy must start with rebuilding neighborhood groups, social clubs, newspapers, Main Street businesses — the institutions where people come together and make decisions collectively.

The real threat from AI isn’t the technology. It’s the atrophying of government over decades: practiced helplessness, subservience to corporations, unwillingness to prosecute wealthy criminals, and a fear of making policy that has consequences. A crisis can force a shift. That needs to happen now.

Amazon promised its Mississippi data centers would generate millions in taxes for schools and local services. Now it’s fighting the county’s valuation of those data centers. If Amazon wins, the community will lose $5–6 million in tax revenue next year.

How did FDR weave together a coalition to fight concentrated economic power? A clip from "FESTIVAL with Pete Davis"—in which The Institute for Local Self Reliance's @stacyfmitchell.bsky.social shares how FDR brought together farmers, workers, and consumers to end the first Gilded Age.

1. Should a $1 billion company qualify as a "small business"? The Trump administration is proposing a radical change to how the government defines a small business. Not only would big companies get access to small business support. The change would be deeply harmful to actual small businesses.

13. If the government goes forward with this, the end result will be that policies designed to give small businesses a fair chance would instead give larger firms new advantages over them — accelerating the very consolidation the SBA was created to counter.

11. Established federal contractors, for one. Some 37,000 large government vendors that already hold $71B in contracts would gain access to the contracts currently reserved for small businesses.

12. Private equity could be another big winner. Higher thresholds would give PE firms engaged in “roll-ups” more room to acquire and combine small businesses without those businesses losing access to federal small-business programs.

9. That’s hard to square with the law Congress wrote. Congress defined a small business as one that is “independently owned and operated” and “not dominant in its field.” The SBA’s new methodology focuses heavily on the latter while largely sidestepping the former.

5. How does the SBA get there? By fundamentally changing what it means to be “small.” Instead of examining the structure of each industry to determine what constitutes smallness within that particular context, it seeks to label all non-dominant firms as small.

6. Then there’s some methodological sleight of hand. The SBA would lump nearly 1,000 distinct industries into just 338 broad groups. The bigger the industry group, the bigger the threshold of non-dominance, the bigger the companies qualifying as “small.”

3. We have a pretty good idea the impact this will have. Past increases in the size thresholds crowded out actual small businesses. When larger firms gained access to government contracts and loans, smaller firms lost out. Revenue declined, they filed fewer patents, and they closed at higher rates.

4. Now imagine that effect on a vastly larger scale. The earlier increases researchers studied were much smaller and limited to particular industries. The Trump proposal would dramatically raise thresholds across virtually the entire economy.

2. The Small Business Administration (SBA) is seeking public comment on a proposal to sharply raise the size thresholds that define a small businness. This would make 114,000 larger companies eligible for $200B+ in federal contracts, loan guarantees, and other support set aside for small businesses.

I have a new rant up at Pressing Issues about David Ellison, legal fixer Makan Delrahim, and other Paramount mouthpieces who are speed-running through the four stages of greedy corporate grief: abandonment, astroturf, antisemitism and assholery. They are, as the kids say, crashing out.

I live in one of the areas affected by this bullshit. We have a landline because of a lack of cell service. Our internet is essentially dial up speeds. I can not apply for many healthcare WFH positions because sat/nazinet does not meet security requirements.

Amid all the corruption, this is especially gross: the billions Congress/Biden approved to build fiber internet in places left behind has been redirected to Elon Musk & Jeff Bezos for doing nothing. Musk has pocketed $738 million so far. Places like rural Louisiana were screwed.
