A few years ago I was on holiday with two friends from Canada and New Zealand and we got talking about childhood TV shows... the discovery we'd all been growing up in parallel universes in different parts of the world was mind-bending.

Also to be clear, this is a photo of the toys when they were on display at a museum exhibit on Canadian children’s TV a few years ago.

Not only was Hamble dropped from the UK version in favour of Poppy but she was the only one of the regular crew not to make the transfer to Australia when ABC's version appeared in 1966. I guess it's hard to appear on TV when you're sharing a cell block with a young Hannibal Lecter.

Polka-Dot Door was a big part of my childhood. It was weird to listen to the Joy Whitby episode and find out how much of it was derived from Play School’s format!

GREAT NEWS FOR ALL READERS INSIDE! We have a new podcast out today, in which @samiraahmeduk.bsky.social and @gkw.bsky.social visit Rebellion Publishing, and explore the history of comic-strip TV tie-ins (including Look-in). With some additional @2000ad.bsky.social content, of course.

Nobody ever mentions the brilliant TV TOPS on which Alan Cumming once worked!

Agree with Samira that “For the World is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky” is a good solid episode of TOS, & moreover has one of the most magnificent & evocative episode titles in Star Trek! 🙂🖖🏼

This was excellent as usual... but I'm extremely excited about the next episode coming up. A visit to the IPC archives to look at British TV show inspired Comics. Cor! Get signed up.

NEW EPISODE! @samiraahmeduk.bsky.social and @gkw.bsky.social journey to 1971, to watch HR Pufnstuf, The Onedin Line, The Great Debate (one of TV's biggest disasters)... and Star Trek! Available wherever you get your podcasts.

I was too young for Onedin at the time but Talking Pictures showed the first series a while back and I really enjoyed it. I need to look out for the DVDs Star Trek was prime time viewing back then although I only remember the repeats on a Monday evening before Sykes!

Did you notice actress/singer Kate Robbins in the concert sequence in the ‘James Paul McCartney ‘ tv show?

Great episode. When I was at uni we went to a recording of Blockbusters. We didn't get to meet Bob but we did get to wander about on the set. He had a stash of mint imperials in a little glass bowl on his podium. Took one, kept it like some kind of holy relic for ages. Sadly lost now.

Thank you for the lovely shout-out. Can’t believe you’ve now been doing this a year. What a gold run of episodes. #Blockbusters #HotSpot

I can but hope to have that recall and eloquence should I reach Joy Whitby's age. It's so important to recognise the achievements of such TV pioneers. So thanks to the two of you for doing just that. Listening was both a touching and life-affirming experience.
