I enjoyed writing this piece about why we might be witnessing a return to the spirit of punk (written pre Glastonbury punk uproar!) #punk #culturematters #alienation #rage

"The spirit of punk is brave and uncompromising and in the current context, it is a radical act. Especially knowing that mainstream media will coalesce to ridicule you, silence you or bring you down." Great post by Hanna Chalmers @drownedinsound.bsky.social www.drownedinsound.org/why-we-might...

Why does 25% AfD among young men spark a thousand "what is going on with young men?" posts yet Die Linke 34% among young women generates...nothing at all? Yes, young men voting for the radical right is an important phenomenon. But so is young women going rad left *at even higher rates*.

I want everyone who said they couldn't vote for Harris, because her policies didn't go far enough in one or several areas, and concluded "they're all the same", to make themselves a little scrapbook over the next four years. As an aide-mémoire for next time.

The year is 2035. I meet President AOC in the Oval Office. "You've done well," she says. "By telling men to dress gay, you've lowered the population rate by 90%, thereby reducing carbon emissions." She slides me a manilla envelope. I can now afford a home in a walkable neighborhood

Not much (erm maybe nothing) I've ever agreed with Sarah Vine on but her point on R4 this morning about most middle aged women being resilient to sexist stuff having grown up in the 90's really resonated - I think I'm much tolerant than many younger women (not saying a good thing) to sexist 'bants'

This highlights something important: machine learning is being used for this kind of thing, and is good at it. For example, my brother has used it to find potentially dangerous and practically invisible faults in composite materials. But ChatGPT and Midjourney are easier to grasp and more "Wow!"

Beautiful piece and accompanying images...As someone that has spent a lot of time driving on the Autobahn this year...

50 years ago this month, Kraftwerk’s Autobahn changed pop music forever. I drove from Bonn to Hamburg to capture the iconic road's sights and sounds – and work out why nobody in Dusseldorf seemed bothered about the band (and yes this WAS a dream commission!) www.theguardian.com/music/2024/n...
