...not only in expanding coverage, but also in ensuring protected areas are effectively monitored and managed. From new protections on the high seas to the data needed to track progress, accessible, open-data tools can help bridge critical gaps and accelerate action.

🌍 Ocean pollution. Oil and gas. Biodiversity. We tackled these pressing issues at #ClimateWeekNYC with a diverse group of speakers last month. 🔗 The event page is now live on our website, featuring highlights and recordings of all three panels here: skytruth.org/events/turni...

New protected areas are coming on the high seas, but how they'll be monitored is unclear. Free, accessible tools built on open data can help close these gaps. That's why we'll be joining our friends & partners, the Med Sea Alliance, Together for the Ocean, and @earthechointl.bsky.social, at COP17.

🌐 "The broader implication of SkyTruth's findings sits at the intersection of international conservation policy and basic environmental physics. Oil does not obey international law. A slick that forms outside an MPA boundary will follow ocean currents regardless of the legal designation on the map."

AI use isn’t new to us. SkyTruth has used machine learning for years, notably with our free open-source ocean oil pollution detection platform, Cerulean. What’s changed is the scale at which we can now apply it.

As we enter a new era of AI integration, we’re very intentional about how we apply this technology alongside our team’s skills, while keeping a human-centered approach. SkyTruth CTO Karl Wurster reflects on how AI use has shaped how we build our products in a new post: skytruth.org/blog/ai-at-s...

skytruth.orgAI at SkyTruth: Staying Human-CenteredAI is changing not just what we do, but the pace at which we do it. That’s prompting us to be intentional about how we apply it alongside our team’s skills, while keeping a human-centered approach.

We recently took part in the Oceans AI Tech Roundtable hosted by Bloomberg Philanthropies at #ClimateWeekNYC and have been taking a comprehensive look within our own organization, reflecting on how it is integrated across our workflows. (Climate Week NYC roundtable 📸: Carla Torres)

🗣️ "It’s one thing to designate an area a marine protected area. It’s another thing entirely to ensure that that area is well enough monitored and managed to ensure that pollution and other impacts are not negatively affecting the marine protected area.”

🗿 How do you monitor one of the world’s largest marine protected areas when it’s 2,000 miles off the coast? The Chilean government put that question forward when establishing a marine protected area around Easter Island in 2012. @pew.org reached out to SkyTruth with the challenge.

The prototype also attracted the attention of actor Leonardo DiCaprio, who provided $6 million in funding after seeing a live demo. His backing supported further development & @globalfishingwatch.org launched at the 2016 Our Ocean Conference, with DiCaprio & Sec. of State John Kerry announcing it.

As Global Fishing Watch expanded, it became clear that the project was taking on its own identity. In 2017, Global Fishing Watch became an independent organization. But our relationship remains strong through shared board representation and ongoing technical collaboration.

🤔 This revelation sparked a pivotal question: Could machine learning technology automatically recognize fishing patterns on a global scale? The concept gained momentum when the global visualization potential impressed Google's Geo for Good team.

Then, in 2014, a conversation at the Economist World Ocean Summit revealed @oceana.bsky.social was also interested in bringing this work to life. We got to work, building a prototype with Google and Oceana that was presented on a massive LED screen at the 2014 World Parks Congress in Australia.

We designed a year-long satellite monitoring project in response, using radar imagery to detect vessels in the waters around the island. A breakthrough came when working with data from an automated tracking system used on ships called the automatic identification system, or AIS.

"A pattern popped up that was so obvious," explains our CEO, John Amos. "They would move in a straight line at a steady speed when coming out of port, then slow way down and start turning and moving back and forth where they wanted to fish.”

"We've now estimated its true scale using satellite data — the problem is measurable, and potential sources can increasingly be identified. Our analysis also reveals where the biggest gaps in accountability and protection remain, and that is where attention and enforcement need to be directed."

As part of the session, our Chief Technology Officer, Karl Wurster, just announced our latest report: Global Estimate of Marine Oil Pollution. "Oil pollution is a constant, global issue that happens far more often than the spills that make headlines." 👇

🌴 Rich in coral reefs, seagrass meadows & mangrove forests, Bintan Island is a national priority for building coastal resilience in #Indonesia. Its beaches & waters also support tourism and local fishing communities. Yet in 2024, thick black sludge washed ashore, impacting water quality & tourism.

🌊 Using Cerulean, our marine oil detection tool, Financial Times reporters investigated chronic oil pollution hotspots in Southeast Asian waters. No firm source could be determined for the pollution events on Bintan, but with Cerulean, the body of evidence needed to take action continues to grow.
