I had my dissertation defunded and a career path as a USAID technical advisor destroyed and I still detest performative dooming. 1/3 of international student enrollment down? A dire self-inflicted humiliation but the remaining 2/3 don’t need to hear “it’s over forever” they need solutions. And hope

Did the Hardest Problem in AI Just Get Much Easier? A prominent researcher claims to have a revolutionary approach to “interpretability,” or the science of why AI models do what they do. Other experts aren’t so sure. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/27/s...

Haw haw haw Chinese food amirite folks? The only place I know for sure that gave me food poisoning was an overpriced touristy seafood place in New Orleans, and it was _vibrio_ aka Pure Hell. I realize I’m having a Tumblr moment but I really detest casual Sinophobia

MulletReview, aka Brandon Elliott, a former mail carrier turned “hot blonde” and East Asian buffet connoisseur, sampled Pittsburgh's local institutions, including Hokkaido Seafood Buffet. Elliott’s stated goal is eating at a Chinese buffet every day until he gets food poisoning...

Choosing a place that you know is hostile to women, to Black people, to trans people, to whomever you want to exclude and anointing it a critical site for professional exchanges is a pretty unambiguous way to exclude the people *you want to see disadvantaged*.

My local Louisiana news had a fluff segment about some chef doing charity work or whatever but the dude was shaped like a fridge and wore a huge PROTECT TRANS KIDS shirt the entire time, which would be too much for the _BBC_ apparently

Bethany wore a “Protect The Dolls” t-shirt during rehearsals. The BBC posted it on their socials then quietly deleted and reposted it without showing her from the front. On TV last night they actually blurred the message #Strictly

It don't get talked about enough that there's a network of thousands of cameras all over New Orleans that surveil everything, and is owned not by the city or NOPD, but by a private entity that is run by a former cop. www.currentaffairs.org/news/ai-powe...

Dropped my glasses in the midst of a packed and dancing festival crowd last night and somehow managed to reach down into the dark at the exact spot they’d fallen and recover them, unscathed. Burned off half a lifetime’s luck with that one

This is how zombie statistics are born. It's tempting to speculate but best not to. Even research that tries to come up with estimates is often pretty bad because it's very difficult to accurately measure these things, let alone vibe about them.

If you had an AI that could competently check scientific papers for problems, what would you guess is the rate of the following [assume non-scam scientific journals]: 1) outright fraud 2) incorrect use of stats 3) errors that overturn conclusion 4) claiming sources say stuff they don't say

ymmv but to me there is something poignant about seeing a normie-ass pharma ad for BIKTARVY, an HIV antiretroviral, featuring middle-aged people gamboling around and trumpeting U=U. Well within my lifetime this stuff was still discussed in hushed tones

I agree with this. But the academics proclaiming that AI grounding for older teens should be banned and replaced with Latin or whatever are risibly naïve. This stuff is out there, irreversibly; it’s worthwhile to know, to understand, to leverage, and to call out and interrogate when poorly used

I worked through three straight weeks and weekends hitting job market deadlines (including adapting my entire K for an EU setting), had a rollicking good birthday weekend with friends, and am currently the direst piece of lazy couchbound shit and I love it. I literally never do this

I’m being baited, but it worked: To hell with this. This will inevitably lead to productivity expectations unobtainable _without_ one-shotting manuscripts, something I refuse to do even as a genAI researcher. If you hate the writing so much, find another job

#academicsky Has anyone ever been penalized for not having a ResearchGate? Now that I’ve got to waste a nontrivial amount of my life maintaining my ORCID + SciENcv I’m trying to cut out additional “paste in your research achievments, no not like that” makework

Check it out! Lea is live and open to the public 🥳 Lea is an experiment to build better social media by researchers and for researchers, where we own our own data and can build our own feeds, events, and communities. This is still very much a proof-of-concept; we welcome ideas + collaborators!

If you are interested in doing a PhD and the overwhelming tone of abrasive bitterness on this site is discouraging you, you are welcome to DM me. My experience was wonderful. Not everybody's is. I am happy to talk through how, why, and whether that may be the case for you, without judgement.
