Here's a write up of that TV remote working in Bazzite feature I discovered this week. In short, you'll need Bazzite's 44.20261012 update, CEC support, and an LG TV that has Universal Control or a different TV with something like UC. Read more: www.siliconinsights.org/bazzite-quie...

siliconinsights.orgBazzite quietly added support for TV remotes for supremely lazy HTPC experienceThe year of Linux sees the addition of a weird but useful feature to one of the most popular gaming distros.

I'll write this up on the website probably tomorrow, I just wanted to get this out today because it was a good chance do to my first short. I also need to verify as much as I can; this just suddenly started working on my HTPC and there's no info about it online as far as I can tell.

Finished up a piece about Bazzite's Deck 44 update from last month. My experience has been pretty great, to the point where my list of things I'd like to see fixed or implemented in Bazzite has gotten pretty short. www.siliconinsights.org/bazzite-deck...

siliconinsights.orgBazzite Deck 44 is a great update for a SteamOS-like distroI've finally tried out Bazzite Deck 44, and while its headline features aren't a big deal for me, it's the little details that make Deck 44 great.

Wow I just discovered it's really easy to edit videos if you're lazy and just have one long clip to cut up and trim. Literally got done in like an hour.

In less than four days, my CachyOS review has hit a thousand views! Really happy to see SI pick up right where it left off.

Well, my month with CachyOS is finally over. The verdict? I'm gonna keep my CachyOS installation, and I'll only be touching Windows 11 if I actually have to. The Windows experience got especially bad after reinstalling it on a new SSD. Watch here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=oqI5...

The methodologies here are very different: I used Bazzite, HUB used Windows 11, I tested games that HUB didn't (it's just what I had), and HUB's games were much more modern and arguably more graphically intensive. Maybe Windows 11 is less memory efficient, maybe it just depends on the game.

That being said, it's not true that 8GB isn't enough for the 9060 XT all the time. It's certainly enough for me. Good thing too, because buying a new GPU, let alone a 16GB one, is exorbitantly expensive right now. I got my 9060 XT 8GB for $250 a year ago, and in hindsight it was a great deal.

We tested five games released between 2021 and 2025, and none of them showed a significant difference in performance between PCIe 4.0 and 5.0. We tested at 1080p, 1440p, and 4K, and also used the more or most intensive presets. Two of the games also had ray tracing enabled.

Why did my testing not surface any issues while Hardware Unboxed found problems in every game they tested? Probably because my testing methodology didn't exhaust the 9060 XT's 8GB VRAM while HUB's did, hence more PCIe bandwidth in their test leading to better performance.

This is not a normal 16GB vs. 8GB test, mostly because I don't own a 16GB 9060 XT to test against. However, testing by Hardware Unboxed suggests VRAM capacity issues can be alleviated by using PCIe 5.0 instead of 4.0, so I benchmarked the 9060 XT 8GB on both PCIe 5.0 and 4.0.

This is the strangest thing, unplugging the Prestige 14 from the charger allows the B390 iGPU to get a couple extra watts which pushes the frequency from about 1700 MHz to 1900. I have no idea why this would be happening.

Well I just discovered that the performance boost profile on the MSI Prestige 14 with the 358H reduces gaming performance on the charger, somehow. Now I'm retesting the games and applications with the normal performance profile. Another demerit for Windows 11.

Actually it just seems that on Windows 11, the 358H just performs better on battery than on the charger. No idea if this issue is due to MSI or Microsoft or even Intel. This is really weird.

So I'm continuing to evaluate CachyOS on my Panther Lake laptop, and I've tested out docked usage and have now moved onto normal laptop stuff off the charger. The battery life estimate keeps going up. It's at 11 hours right now on a 70% charge. It's running off a USB stick. Incredible.

One of my first projects since rebooting SI is testing out CachyOS on my Panther Lake MSI laptop. If you've got questions about CachyOS and Panther Lake, let me know what you'd like me to explore. This is your chance to find out without doing it yourself! www.siliconinsights.org/trying-out-c...

So since SI went on hiatus, YouTube has added a bunch of new AI stuff for creators, including a thumbnail generator which I unfortunately accidentally clicked on. God these thumbnails are weird. It's especially weird that they seem to be based on the old thumbnails I used to make.

If you're worried that you're spending too much money on RAM right now, you should see how much I spent in 2018. This kit is less than half the price today than it was almost a decade ago.

Did we say Friday? We meant Monday. Who knew planning a wedding takes so much time and energy... Anyways, today we've got a review of PNY's PRO Elite V3 external SSD, though it's really more like a supercharged thumb drive. Watch here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=FeuY...

So we hit 600 subscribers today! Very cool. Also, new video out on Friday.

Hey everyone, so we're not gonna have a video for tomorrow like we intended due to some behind the scenes issues. That video will hopefully come out next week, but since this delay came at the last minute, we literally can't make a video for tomorrow.

Instead of a regular video today, we'll be hosting two livestreams reacting and analyzing CES 2025 presentations, mainly Intel's, AMD's, and Nvidia's. Nvidia's presentation is much later in the day, so we've decided to just do two livestreams instead of waiting for hours. Hope to see you there!

This single chart shows why Lunar Lake could be an absolutely amazing chip for handheld PCs. Top line is the 7940HS in the Flow X13, middle is the 256V in the Galaxy Book5 Pro 360, and bottom is the Deck APU in the Steam Deck LCD.
