Q for #BookHistory and #ArtHistory folks. I'm looking for a reading to assign 3rd year undergrads that describes the process of production for early modern engravings. This is not my area of expertise, and I'm having trouble finding something that works. The course is Histories of the Book. Thanks!

A glimpse into the sixteenth-century printing office. This 16th-century Bible sheet became a printer’s copy: a gathering from an earlier edition, marked in red by compositors and used as copy for a new setting, placed on the visorium above the type cases. #earlymodern #bookhistory #rarebooks 📚💙📜

Okay, maybe some #bookhistory people can help me? I'm thinking about the moment in Areopagitica where Milton writes that books recently were judged upon reception: 'if it prov'd a Monster, who denies, but that it was justly burnt, or sunk into the Sea'.

This is a fantastic blog that examines how we should think about #earlymodern marginalia & #bookhistory. Of the examples provided there are also two by women who owned works by Shakespeare #herbook. Paging @martinevanelk.bsky.social @rossmith.bsky.social @franceswolfreston.bsky.social

Now on the blog, curator @heatherwolfe.bsky.social shares heavily annotated books in the Folger collection from early modern readers who knew the power of underlining words, adding notes in the margin, and even putting the occasional doodle in what they were reading. www.folger.edu/blogs/shakes...

Hey, #bookhistory people, especially those who work on incunabula: Do Christian printers wax poetic (literally) about the miracle of print? I've taken it for granted from the Hebrew printers (they have many wonderful poems on the glories of print), but this may have just been a Jewish thing..?
