Welcome to the new #SFFChat! Every Thursday, alternating mornings and evenings EST, I'll post a new set of questions that anyone can answer! It's chiefly for writers, but if you're a fan of SFF literature, please feel welcome to hop into the space and discuss your favourite writers as well!

#SFFChat Hi there I'm Kiya and I prrrrrobably have to go for the Duat because I literally wrote a book about it? (The Traveller's Guide to the Duat, available from Immanion/Megalithica!)

Hello, everyone! Steve, back again. #SFFChat Q1: Introduce yourself & share a favourite representation of the afterlife or underworld!

SFFChat reposted

#SFFChat Here's the tricky thing: Yes, but it's not what you think it is. Hell is not an afterlife. Neither is Heaven. The Black Desert of Virgil's nightmares? Yes. He's not the best narrator of that, though. It's not something the living are supposed to see. #WriteSky #WritingCommunity

#SFFChat Q2: Does your world contain an underworld or physical afterlife? Or, if not, do your characters believe in one?

SFFChat reposted

The theme of THOSE WHO SPEAK FOR GOD is whether uploading your brain is a type of immorality. Different characters have different beliefs. The religious believe in a supernatural heaven. The FMC believes in living forever through the AI. The MMC starts in one direction and changes his mind #SFFChat

Jordan would be rewarded for this faith and love. If he's punished for anything it would be his doubts. Kind of a fun exercise because THOSE WHO SPEAK FOR GOD does not answer the afterlife question. It leaves it up to you, dear reader 😏 #SFFChat

#SFFChat Q3: Your MC finds themself being punished and/or rewarded in the afterlife! What are they most likely to be punished and/or rewarded for? Feel free to use the seven deadly sins, if you like!

SFFChat reposted

#SFFChat Big caveat: No divine judgement in my worlds. Ever. You can see what would haplen in Virgil's nightmares. The shades of the problem he wronged drown him in sand and kill him over and over again. It wasn't even his fault, but he'd never accept that. #WriteSky #WritingCommunity

So far I've stuck to stories in the same world. In all cases there are characters who are trying to understand what kind of afterlife exists. I enjoy keeping the truth ambiguous, much like real life. #SFFChat

#SFFChat Well, the Black Desert of Death isn't the final destination. What's beyond the desert? No one knows. Not even God. But Azrael, Angel of Death, sort of does, and I'm happy with that. #WriteSky #WritingCommunity

#SFFChat I'm Fox. I write fantasy with heart and brains and, in some cases, butts. My favorite version of the afterlife might be in Order of the Stick, where Lawful Good heaven IS in fact endless indulgence, but most people get tired of it and seek a higher enlightenment after a few decades.

#SFFChat The world of Prophecies (and possibly StS, since they use the same gods) explicitly has an afterlife. Zedenko's cursed soul will simply cease to exist when he dies, though; after spending his entire life fighting tooth and nail just to survive, he is utterly terrified of inexistence.

#SFFChat Q2: Does your world contain an underworld or physical afterlife? Or, if not, do your characters believe in one?

#SFFChat One theory is that your theoretical morality and afterlife depend on which gods you worship. Drohim would be rewarded for exemplary service to the Many, and punished for sometimes doing it out of pride and not just altruism. Seff would be both rewarded and punished for being too badass.

#SFFChat I'd love for my work to have anyone read it, period, but I'd especially love for people to read it after it's been available for decades. To write something people can relate to and enjoy even generations along would be a huge honor. Also, movie rights. I have student loans to pay off.

The god Hermes is a psychopomp, so he has association with death and the afterlife. FFXIV Endwalker and how they broach the afterlife, ghosts, death and how Hermes as a character is are two things I'm obsessed with about the game.

#SFFChat according to Chunish mythology, the soul is reused in a process of reincarnation. You can choose to reincarnate immediately after death, but most will take a chance to relax. Some, however, are punished for a time before being allowed to return.

The only world where I built an explicit afterlife is in ♟️W&B. The Betwixt is a physical land where Uncanny souls linger. Someone who has not passed can travel there, but it is very perilous a la the Underworld in Greek myth.
