Happy anniversary to the games that literally changed the direction of my life lmao

Zelda Universe@zeldauniverse.bsky.social

Oh boy! Link: The Faces of Evil & Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon were both released on this day, 33 years ago, on the Phillips CD-i. (October 10, 1993) We will never stop talking about these games. 😁

From editing videos to make Link say vile things, to being gifted the original background illustrations, to somehow end up as a game dev director. Cheers to you Zelda CD-i; I've seldom seen something universally deemed 'bad' bring so much joy.

Yep, it's a totally separate thing. These derivative-looking games are getting funded and marketed because they sell, or at least, sell to demanded expectations.

This criticism fundamentally misunderstands who gets to decide what ideas get made, imo. I don’t think it is even remotely true that game devs now are drawing from a shallower well of inspiration

Every game dev I've ever met - even the most tenured and senior ones - love, play, and are inspired by their fellow peers' video games.

I personally believe a wide variety of interests and life experiences (I daresay...diversity) is crucial to crafting compelling media, but it's very silly to blame the samey-mess of AAA games on creative folks when it's yet again a money problem.

The team at CRG has worked very, very hard on this (I have been cheering them on and helping coordinate parts of development). A huge amount of time has been spent towards ensuring the game is faithfully reproduced with QoL updates and other awesome additions. Look forward to it!

This was a labor of love from many folks. The biggest shout out to Lightmopp for leading the way on development and the server side code. For me (I did the client side mod), it was a great way to learn more about networking (and dive back into my crusty old code). Please have fun and enjoy!

Hey friends, brief professional update: I have joined the lovely folks at Clear River Games, with the role of internal development director. There I'll continue my work of leading dev on modern re-releases of classic video games. Many exciting projects on the horizon I can't wait to discuss!

As before, my indie work as Seedy Eye Software continues unabated. Lots to look forward to there, too. ; ) I am grateful I get to do what I love for a living in a time where that seems more and more like a miracle. My eternal thanks to those who've supported me throughout the years!

Show's over, and what an excellent show it was! Got to meet so, so many Arzette fans in person which means the world to me (extra thanks to all who bought something!). My biggest thanks to the @liretro.bsky.social staff for being consistently amazing and inviting me. Until next time!

Hey friends, as a reminder I'm selling Arzette goodies at @liretro.bsky.social all weekend! I'm lucky enough to share a table with the venerable @jparish.bsky.social who is selling a few of his books. Come stop by the table just outside the amazing exhibit hall!

I played the game recently and I kinda love it. Got a kick when I found out Vinny from Vinesauce was voicing in the game. Give Arzette a shot if you got some cash around, it a very silly time. #Arzette #indiegame

I'm very lucky that many games I've worked on have been available physically, and that Arzette got a physical release (including retail in Europe). As other devs will also tell you, there is no better feeling than having a physical manifestation of your work in your hands.

I finished "Fuck's Quest II" last night after seeing a few folks talk about it. Unreasonably fun, surprisingly clever at times (insane to say about a game with a fart spell), and, for those who know me, a game firmly in my wheelhouse. I recommend it!

Myself and every person I work with professionally right now (including those who have been programming longer than I've been alive) refuse to touch AI with a ten foot pole. Maybe I am in a bubble. Speaking only for me, I will fight it tooth and nail.

Giuseppe Navarria@techdesign.rocks

Indie devs are in a tough spot: don't use AI, and watch everyone else ship games x5 faster than you or use it and be damned. I don't think there are many coders left that are not using AI agents for coding right now, it's just that effective (been coding games for 28 years, professionally for 20)

Hopefully this means we will eventually get the actual Destiny 2 remastered as well. Exciting!

Realised I hadn't posted my Arzette animation from last year here yet. I was desperate to have a go at these characters lol, so I came up with whatever this is. Could def do it better now, but still quite like it.

Meet one of the main figures behind porting retro games for modern systems as Limited Run Games development director and lead on the iconic Carbon Engine, @seth.games Seth Fulkerson heads to LI Retro this August 7-9. See what he has in store next this summer at LI Retro! LIRetro.com

I didn't play most 'classic' game consoles until long after they were off the market. This strange phenomenon is known as 'growing up lower class'.

I can't be mad at dying repeatedly in Moon Child Friend Edition, even if I wish I had more power than the friendship one (the snakes and birds are not friendly), because I get to return to the title screen to let the theme song soothe my frustrations before diving back in.

everyone's on moon child rn but you can pick any random amiga game and the odds are good you're about to get blasted with the dance anthem of the next 5 centuries

i said I wanted to draw Arzette again so I did. I thought she might cool good in a swimsuit too so two pics instead of one yay. #art #fanart #arzette

Happy to finally announce this! It’s been a privilege to work with such a beloved brand. Especially cool to bring back one of the best arcade beat-’em-ups ever (with rollback netcode courtesy of our amazing partners at Komi Games). Excited for folks to be able to play this…soon!

I was trying to doodle before bed and started doing some rough Arzette sketches cuz I replayed that game recently. I should draw her more #art #fanart #arzette

I'll be at GDC March 10-12th! Please reach out if you wanna find some time to talk all things Carbon Engine/retro releases or simply catch up. Looking forward to it!

JAWS: Retro Edition from the Carbon Team is out and you get to check out the unreasonably good JAWS: Enhanced Edition as part of it! Jeremy and Patrick truly killed it. It's shockingly good!

Happy Jawsday to you all. Looks like the @limitedrungames.com digital version of Jaws: Retro Edition is up (someone even sent me a nice note about it!), so let me start your day by telling you that the Enhanced Edition included as part of the reissue kicks ass. (I'm biased, though; I designed it)

This release also marks our renewed focus on emulation quality. Special thanks to @kevarmstrong.bsky.social for his hard work in this regard. Cycle accurate NES on console is no joke! We also have an excellent new CRT filter we'll be using going forward.

A lot of you are picking up Arzette for the holidays, which means a lot more than I can properly articulate. I don’t take it for granted. If you’re playing it for the first time (or replaying it) I’d love to hear your thoughts. Happy holidays, everyone.

Seasons greetings from the Arzette team! Unwrap the game on sale for up to 75% off Arzette on select platforms this holiday season. Your support enables us to keep creating; we sincerely appreciate it. Have a very safe & happy holiday! PC: bit.ly/3ZSc4qQ SW: bit.ly/48od4Wl PS: bit.ly/49c9JLe

been playing Arzette: The Jewel of Faramore for the past few days, it's a pretty fun game reminiscent of the Zelda CD-i series #pixelart #pixel_art #art #artist #fanart #indiegame #arzettethejeweloffaramore #arzette #indieplatformer #lospec

As before, this will not affect my output as an independent developer. I’ll continue to have my hands in several indie games moving forward, including my work at Seedy Eye Software. Stay tuned!

If you're in the area, I'll be around the LRG retail store tomorrow from 12:30 to 3 to hang out and sign copies of Arzette. There's a lot of other cool stuff going on too, so come say hi!
